Application of geothermal energy in buildings has been gaining popularity as it provides the benefits of both heating and cooling a building. Among the various types of geothermal energy systems, ground-coupled heat pump system is the most commonly applied one in South Korea. A ground heat exchanger plays an important role as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. For the stable operation of a ground-coupled heat pump system, a ground heat exchanger should be sized so that it provides sufficient heating and cooling energy. Heating and cooling energies generated in ground heat exchangers mainly depend on the temperature difference between the heating medium in ground heat exchangers and the surrounding ground. In addition, the performance of ground heat exchangers influences the change in ground temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this interrelation between the change in the ground temperature and the performance of ground heat exchanger for an accurate estimation of its performance. However, previous thermal analysis models for ground heat exchangers are not competent enough to allow a complete understanding of this interrelation. Therefore, this study proposes a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger analysis model. First, a previous thermal analysis model for ground heat exchangers, including an analytical model, a g-function, and a numerical model are analyzed. Next, to overcome the limitations of the previous models, a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger model is proposed. Finally, this study validated the proposed model with the measurement data of the thermal response test, sandbox test, and TRNSYS DST model. All validation results showed a good agreement. These findings helped us to investigate the thermal performance of ground heat exchangers more accurately than the analytical models, and faster than the numerical models. Furthermore, the proposed model contributes to the design of ground heat exchangers by considering the different operation conditions of buildings.

The actuating performance of plate-type unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators having various stacking sequences was evaluated by three dimensional finite element analysis on the basis of thermal analogy model. Thermal residual stress distribution at each layer in an asymmetrically laminated plate with PZT ceramic layer and thermally induced dome height were predicted using classical laminated plate theory. Thermal analogy model was applied to a bimorph cantilever beam and LIPCA-C2 actuator in order to confirm its validity. Finite element analysis considering thermal residual deformation showed that the bending behavior of piezoelectric composite actuator subjected to electric loads was significantly different according to the stacking sequence, thickness of constituent PZT ceramic and boundary conditions. In particular, the increase of thickness of PZT ceramic led to the increase of the bending stiffness of piezoelectric composite actuator but it did not always lead to the decrease of actuation distance according to the stacking sequences of piezoelectric composite actuator. Therefore, it is noted that the actuating performance of unimorph piezoelectric composite actuator is rather affected by bending stiffness than actuation distance.
Prelaunch thermal analysis of the KSLV (Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I PLF (Payload Fairing) was performed to predict maximum/minimum liftoff temperatures and to evaluate of air conditioning performance. Prelaunch thermal analysis includes internal air conditioning effect, external convective heating/cooling, radiation exchange with the ground and sky, radiation between spacecraft and PLF, and solar radiation incident on PLF. Analysis was performed at two extreme conditions, hot day condition and cold day condition. The results showed that the maximum liftoff temperature was $53^{\circ}C$ and the minimum liftoff temperature was $-3.8^{\circ}C$. It was also found that conditioned air supplying, in $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C\;and\;1200\;m^3/hr$, is sufficient to keep the internal air in required temperature range.
PVT (Photovoltaic/thermal) system is technology that combines PV and solar thermal collector to produce and use both solar heat and electricity. PVT has the advantage that the energy production per unit area is higher than any single use of PV or solar thermal energy systems because it can produce and use heat and electricity simultaneously. Air-type PVT collectors use air as the heat transfer medium, and the air flow rate and flow pattern are important factors affecting the performance of the PVT collector. In this study, a new air-type PVT collector with improved thermal performance was designed and manufactured. And then thermal and electrical performance and characteristics of air-type PVT collector were analyzed through experiments. For the thermal performance analysis of the PVT collector, the experiment was conducted under the test conditions of ISO 9806:2017 and the electrical performance was analyzed under the same conditions. As a result, the thermal efficiency increased to 26~45% as the inlet flow rate of PVT collector increased from $60{\sim}200m^3/h$. Also, it was confirmed that the air-type PVT collector prevents the PV surface temperature rise according to the operating conditions.

A small satellite, DubaiSat-1 FM(Flight Model), which is based on SI-200 standard bus platform and scheduled to be launched in 2008, is being developed by Satrec Initiative and EIAST(Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology). The TCS(Thermal Control Subsystem) of DubaiSat-1 FM has been designed to mainly utilize passive thermal control in order to minimize power consumption, but the active control method using heaters has been applied to some critical parts. Also, thermal analysis has been performed for DubaiSat-1's mission orbit using a thermal analysis model. The thermal design is modified and optimized to satisfy the design temperature requirements for all parts according to the analysis result. The thermal control performance of DubaiSat-1 FM is verified by thermal vacuum space simulation, consisting of thermal cycling and thermal balance test. Also, to validate the thermal modeling of DubaiSat-1 FM, comparison of test results with analysis has been performed and model calibration has been completed.
As motor performance enhancement by improving electric design has reached its limit and downsizing issue has risen, the importance of thermal design is increasing. In this study, the flow and temperature distribution were reviewed with the help of CFD analysis and this result was compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, parametric analysis with thermal design structure showed that axial duct width but fan capacity is a critical factor to lower the hot spot temperature in electric motor.

In-wheel driving inverter inside engine room sometimes operates in the harsh environment like high temperature of about $105^{\circ}C$. Especially, the size and power density of the inverter has become smaller and more increased. Thus, it is essential to manage the temperature of the inverter with IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) switching devices for performance and endurance, because the temperature can be getting increase. In this paper, we performed the thermal flow analysis of inverter models with wave type and pin fin type cooling channels, and investigated the heat transfer characteristics of the inverter models using cooling water on channels at 8 L/min and $65^{\circ}C$. Also, we compared the thermal performance under various conditions such as coolant flow rate and layered power module structure. Therefore, we determined the feasibility of the initial inverter models and the thermal performance enhancement.

The main research content of this paper is to evaluate the structural integrity and the cooling performance of 4250 kVA power transformer with ONAN(Oil Natural and Air Natural) mode. The dynamic analysis is used to verify the structural safety of the transformer by seismic loading. The transformer structure is simplified and NX software is used to build a three-dimensional model, and ANSYS commercial software is used to calculate the stress and deformation by applying corresponding load. The analysis result was evaluated whether it satisfies the design requirements according to the IEEE Std 693 standard. In terms of thermal analysis to evaluate the cooling performance, the thermal physical model is used to calculate the heat exchange between the radiator and the tank in the steady state, and the result is input into the Fluent software to calculate the internal temperature field of the transformer tank, which reduces the calculation cost of thermal fluid. Comparing the simulated hot spot temperature and top oil temperature of the transformer with the calculation results of the IEC60076 classic model, it is found that the error is only 1.9%.
In this paper, the thermal effects on the performance of floating ring journal bearing are investigated theoretically. The numerical analyses include pressure drop at inner film due to a centrifugal force, fluid momentum effects of supply oil into inner film and thermal effects in lubricating films. All performance data are presented as the rotating speed of journal from 10,000 rpm to 70,000 rpm.
The aim of this study is to develop a software tool of thermal performance and economic analysis of windows, called WEPTools which helps architects, builders, and engineers quickly identify the most cost-effective window system in the very early stages of the design process. This software is suitable for examining middle or Large-sized commercial and residential buildings that are characterized by one thermal zone. To establish the reliability of the simulation results, we adopt TRNSYS algorithm of which verification has already well approved. Therefore it performs whole-building energy analysis for 8760 hours/year, including dynamic thermal calculation.
