  • A detailed satellite panel thermal model composed of more than thousands nodes can not be directly integrated into a spacecraft thermal model due to its node size and the limitation of commercial satellite thermal analysis programs. For the integration of the panel into the satellite thermal model, a reduced thermal model having proper accuracy is required. A thermal model reduction method was developed and validated by using a geostationary satellite panel. The temperature differences of main components between the detailed and the reduced thermal model were less than $1^{\circ}C$ in steady state analysis. Also, the dynamic responses of the detailed and the reduced thermal model show very similar trends. Thus, the developed reduction method can be applicable to actual satellite thermal design and analysis with resonable accuracy and convenience.

  • The present study concerns the numerical simulation of a supply airflow control in a variable air volume (VAY) system. A stratified thermal model (multi-zone model) is suggested to predict a local thermal response of an air-conditioned space. The effects of various thermal parameters such as the cooling system capacity, the thermal mass of an air-conditioned space, the time delay of thermal effect, and the building envelope heat transmission are investigated. Further, the influence of control parameters such as the supply air temperature, the PI control factor and the thermostat location on a VAV system is quantitatively delineated. The results obtained show that the previous homogeneous lumped thermal model (single zone model) may overestimate the time taken to the set point temperature. It is also found that there exist the appropriate ranges of the control parameters for the optimal airflow control of the VAV system.

  • Thermal model reduction algorithms and techniques are introduced to condense a huge satellite panel thermal model into the simplified model on the purpose of calculating the thermal responses of a satellite on orbit. Guyan condensation algorithm with the substitution matrix manipulation is developed and the mathematical procedure is depicted step by step. A block-form LU decomposition method is also invited to compare the developed algorithm. The constructed reduced thermal model induced from the detailed model based on a real satellite panel is satisfying the correlation criterion of ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for the validity accuracy. Guyan condensation algorithm is superior to the block-form LU decomposition method on computation time.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and was developed by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. COMS was tested under vacuum and very law temperature conditions in order to correlate thermal model and to verify thermal design. The test was performed by using KARI large thermal vacuum chamber. The COMS S/C thermal model was successfully correlated versus the 2 thermal balance test phases. After model correlation, temperatures deviation of all individual unit were less than $5^{\circ}C$ and global deviation and standard deviation also satisfied the requirements, less than $2^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$. The final flight prediction was performed by using the correlated thermal model.

  • Thermal displacement is an important issue in machine tool systems. During the last several decades, thermal error compensation technology has significantly reduced thermal distortion error; this success has been attributed to the development of a precise, robust thermal error model. A major advantage of using the thermal error model is instant compensation for the control variables during the modeling process. However, successful application of thermal error modeling requires correct determination of the temperature sensor placement. In this paper, a procedure for predicting thermal-mode-based thermal error is introduced. Based on this thermal analysis, temperature sensors were positioned for multiple heat-source models. The performance of the sensors based on thermal-mode error analysis, was compared with conventional methods through simulation and experiments, for the case of a slide table in a transient state. Our results show that for predicting thermal error the proposed thermal model is more accurate than the conventional model.

  • Thermally-induced errors originating from machine tool errors have received significant attention recently because high speed and precise machining is now the principal trend in manufacturing proce sses using CNC machine tools. Since the thermal error model is generally a function of temperature, the thermal error compensation system contains temperature sensors with the same number of temperature variables. The minimization of the number of variables in the thermal error model can affect the economical efficiency and the possibility of unexpected sensor fault in a error compensation system. This paper presents a thermal error model with minimum number of variables using a fuzzy logic strategy. The proposed method using a fuzzy logic strategy does not require any information about the characteristics of the plant contrary to numerical analysis techniques, but the developed thermal error model guarantees good prediction performance. The proposed modeling method can also be applied to any type of CNC machine tool if a combination of the possible input variables is determined because the error model parameters are only calculated mathematically-based on the number of temperature variables.

  • As current manufacturing processes require high spindle speed and precise machining, increasing accuracy by reducing volumetric errors of the machine itself, particularly thermal errors, is very important. Thermal errors can be estimated by many empirical models, for example, an FEM model, a neural network model, a linear regression model, an engineering judgment model, etc. This paper discusses to make a modeling of thermal errors efficiently through backward elimination and fuzzy logic strategy. The model of a thermal error using fuzzy logic strategy overcomes limitation of accuracy in the linear regression model or the engineering judgment model. It shows that the fuzzy model has more better performance than linear regression model, though it has less number of thermal variables than the other. The fuzzy model does not need to have complex procedure such like multi-regression and to know the characteristics of the plant, and the parameters of the model can be mathematically calculated. Also, the fuzzy model can be applied to any machine, but it delivers greater accuracy and robustness.
