  • The Stirling refrigerators have been widely used for the cooling of the infrared detector and HTS to the cryogenic temperature. The Stirling refrigerator with the rotary compressor are applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the refrigerators have the compact structure and light weight. The typical performance factors of the Stirling refrigerator are the cool-down time, cooling capacity at the desired temperature and the input power. And the above performance factors are depends on the thermal insulation characteristics of the Dewar. In this study, the steady thermal load of the Dewar and the performance of the Stirling refrigerator were measured. The results show the dependency of the input power and the charging pressure on the performance of the refrigerator.

  • In twin roll strip casting process, the design of casting roll is the most important equipment for producing strip. Analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the casting roll are carried out by using the finite element program, ANSYS. Both the elastic deformation and the elasto-plastic deformation under a thermal load are considered in the analysis. Optimization to minimize the volume of roll is performed under the various thermal loads such as the heat flux and the roll speed. Design variables are defined by diameters and positions of the cooling hole in the roll , Although the thermal load remarkably varies, the design variables and objective function are found to be consistent.

  • This paper explains the process design for improving tool life in the conventional hot forging process. The thermal load and the thermal softening are happened by contact between the hotter billet and the cooler tools in hot forging process. Tool life decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool was caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tools and the billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. Above all, the main factors which affect die accuracy and tool life we wear and the plastic deformation of a tool. The newly developed techniques for predicting tool life are applied to estimate the production quantity for a spindle component and these techniques can be applied to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • The existence of grooves on the surface of bond coat has significant effect on the instability of thermal barrier system. In this work, the thermal-mechanical fatigue experiments were performed under various thermal and mechanical loads for FeCralloy specimens with and without yttrium dopant to observe the deformation of surface grooves. The effect of temperature, fatigue load and the ratio of curvature on the deformation of grooves were investigated. As the results, it has been found that the higher load level and the higher curvature ratio induces the larger deformation near the grooves. However, the addition of yittrium dopant induces the adverse results.

  • This paper studies the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under thermal and arbitrary in-plane periodic loads using first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing partial differential equations of motion are established by a perturbation technique. Then, the Galerkin method is applied to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Based on Bolotin's method, the system equations of Mathieu-type are formulated and used to determine dynamic instability regions of laminated plates in the thermal environment. The effects of temperature, layer number, modulus ratio and load parameters on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are investigated. The results reveal that static and dynamic load, layer number, modulus ratio and uniform temperature rise have a significant influence on the thermal dynamic behavior of laminated plates.

  • This paper presents the thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the secondary piping of LMFR using Green's function method and standard FEM. The thermohydraulic loading conditions used in the present analysis are simplified sinusoidal thermal loads and the random type data thermal load. The thermomechainical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code subsectionNH. The analysis results of fatigue for the sinusoidal and random load cases show that fatigue failure would occur at a geometrically discontinuous location during 90,000 hours of operation The fracture mechanics analysis showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage of the operation. The fatigue crack was evaluated to propagate up to 5 ㎜ along the thickness direction during the first 944 and 1083 hours of operation for the sinusoidal and the random loading cases, respectively.

  • This paper provides V-factor estimation under combined mechanical and thermal load for circumferential cracks. Results are based on finite element analyses and effect of types and magnitudes of the thermal stress, crack geometry, the loading mode and plastic strain hardening on variations of the V-factor are investigated. The results of finite element analyses are compared with R6 values. As a result, it is shown that R6 gives generally conservative results. The conservatism is especially increased for the combination of large mechanical and thermal load. As a result, new estimation method which uses failure assessment line in R6 is proposed for V-factor and gives less conservative results.

  • Hot forging is widely used in the manufacturing of industry machine component. The mechanical, thermal load and thermal softening which are happened by the high temperature in hot forging process. Tool life decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tool and billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. These are one of the main factors affecting die accuracy and tool life. That is because hot forging process has many factors influencing tool life, and there was not accurate in-process data. In this research, life prediction of hot forging tool by wear and plastic deformation analysis considering tempering parameter has been carried out for automobile component. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • Nuclear ship reactors have several features different from land-based PWR's. Especially, effects of ship motions on reactor thermal-hydraulics and good load following capability for abrupt load changes are essential characteristics of nuclear ship reactors. This study modified the RETRAN-03 to analyze the thermal-hydraulic transients under three-dimensional ship motions, named RETRAN-03/MOV in order to apply to future marine reactors. First Japanese nuclear ship MUTSU reactor have been analyzed under various ship motions to verify this code. Calculations have been peformed under rolling, heaving and stationary inclination conditions during normal operation. Also, the natural circulation has been analyzed, which can provide the decay heat removal to ensure the passive safety of marine reactors. As results, typical thermal-hydraulic characteristics of marine reactors such as flow rate oscillations and S/G water level oscillations have been successfully simulated at various conditions.
