A one-dimensional heat transfer model coupled with parameter estimation is developed in this study to predict the effective thermal conductivities of soil formation and borehole resistances from in situ field test data. In this application a new method of using initial ignoring time(IIT) obtained from error estimation is tried and turned out to be successful in determining soil thermal conductivities. The validity of this model is accomplished through comparison of the predicted temperature profiles of the model with the data from laboratory scale experimental setting. Eleven test boreholes were constructed in Ochang, Chungcheong Buk Do, and thermal response test was carried out with each borehole. The results of the in situ tests were analyzed with our 1-D numerical model and compared with the results of line source method. The comparison shows that the thermal properties from line source method is a little lower (${\sim}95%$)than those from numerical method. The reason of such result seems to be the lower thermal conductivity of grout material, which is not counted in line source method.

The purposes of this study were to make clear the present condition of indoor thermal environment in apartment units and to analyze the relation of the living factors with indoor thermal elements. The field surveys consisted of measurements on physical elements and observations on living factors and interview on resident's subjective responses were carried out in 20 apartment units. The field surveys were carried out during the $January{\sim}March$ 2007. Measuring elements were air temperature, globe temperature, and relative humidity. As results, the averages of indoor temperature each houses were $21.2{\sim}27.2^{\circ}C$, the number of houses exceed the comfort zone were 4. The averages of globe temperature each houses were $21.3{\sim}27.5^{\circ}C$, 6 houses exceeded the comfort zone. The means of relative humidity were $19.5{\sim}58.8%$, relatively dry condition. The clothing value of residents were $0.39{\sim}0.89$ clo(average 0.68 clo). The average of thermal sensation ratings each room were $4.2{\sim}4.8$, 'neutral'$\sim$'slightly warm'. The results of regression analysis on relations of living factors with the thermal elements are as follow; ventilation time(outdoor air exchange), door opening time with balcony, and gas cooker use time had significant effect on indoor temperature.
As regulations governing the control of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become increasingly stringent in China, regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs) have been more frequently applied in medium- and high-concentration VOCs treatments. However, due to the lack of existing RTO-related research, experience remains a dominant factor for industrial application. This paper thus aimed to establish a model for industrial RTOs, using a transient simulation method and thermal equilibrium model to simulate the internal velocities and temperature distributions of an RTO across multiple cycles. A comparison showed an error of less than 5% between most correlating simulated and experimental measurement points, verifying that the simulation method was accurate. After verification, the velocity and temperature fields inside the RTO were simulated to study the uniformity of temperature and velocity within the packed beds: both fields displayed high uniformity after gas flowed through the honeycomb regenerator. The effects of air volume, VOCs concentrations, and valve switching times on the oxidation chamber temperature, RTO outlet temperature, and thermal efficiency (as well as their averages) were studied. The VOCs removal rate in this study was constantly above 98%, and the average thermal efficiency reached 90%.

Thermal sensors, also called thermal infrared wavelength sensors, measure temperature based on the intensity of infrared signals that reach the sensor. The infrared signals recognized by the sensor include infrared wavelength(0.7~3.0㎛) and radiant infrared wavelength(3.0~100㎛). Infrared(IR) wavelengths are divided into five bands: near infrared(NIR), shortwave infrared(SWIR), midwave infrared(MWIR), longwave infrared(LWIR), and far infrared(FIR). Most thermal sensors use the LWIR to capture images. Thermal sensors measure the temperature of the target in a non-contact manner, and the data can be affected by the sensor's viewing angle between the target and the sensor, the amount of atmospheric water vapor (humidity), air temperature, and ground conditions. In this study, the characteristics of three thermal imaging sensor models that are widely used for observation using unmanned aerial vehicles were evaluated, and the optimal application field was determined.
This model is proposed to describe the buckling behavior of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in an elastic medium taking into account the combined effects of the magnetic field, the temperature, the nonlocal parameter, the number of walls. Using Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory, thin cylindrical shell theory and Van der Waal force (VdW) interactions, we develop a system of partial differential equations governing the buckling response of CNTs embedded on Winkler, Pasternak, and Kerr foundations in a thermal-magnetic environment. The pre-buckling stresses are obtained by applying airy's stress function and an adjacent equilibrium criterion. To estimate the nonlocal critical buckling load of CNTs under the simultaneous effects of the magnetic field, the temperature change, and the number of walls, an optimization technique is proposed. Furthermore, analytical formulas are developed to obtain the buckling behavior of SWCNTs embedded in an elastic medium without taking into account the effects of the nonlocal parameter. These formulas take into account VdW interactions between adjacent tubes and the effect of terms involving differences in tube radii generally neglected in the derived expressions of the critical buckling load published in the literature. Most scientific research on modeling the effects of magnetic fields is based on beam theories, this motivation pushes me to develop a cylindrical shell model for studying the effect of the magnetic field on the static behavior of CNTs. The results show that the magnetic field has significant effects on the static behavior of CNTs and can lead to slow buckling. On the other hand, thermal effects reduce the critical buckling load. The findings in this work can help us design of CNTs for various applications (e.g. structural, electrical, mechanical and biological applications) in a thermal and magnetic environment.

The free and live load-forced vibration behaviour of porous functionally graded (PFG) higher order nanobeams in the thermal and magnetic fields is investigated comprehensively through this work in the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory (NLSGT). The porosity effects on the dynamic behaviour of FG nanobeams is investigated using four different porosity distribution models. These models are exploited; uniform, symmetrical, condensed upward, and condensed downward distributions. The material characteristics gradation in the thickness direction is estimated using the power-law. The magnetic field effect is incorporated using Maxwell's equations. The third order shear deformation beam theory is adopted to incorporate the shear deformation effect. The Hamilton principle is adopted to derive the coupled thermomagnetic dynamic equations of motion of the whole system and the associated boundary conditions. Navier method is used to derive the analytical solution of the governing equations. The developed methodology is verified and compared with the available results in the literature and good agreement is observed. Parametric studies are conducted to show effects of porosity parameter; porosity distribution, temperature rise, magnetic field intensity, material gradation index, non-classical parameters, and the applied moving load velocity on the vibration behavior of nanobeams. It has been showed that all the analyzed conditions have significant effects on the dynamic behavior of the nanobeams. Additionally, it has been observed that the negative effects of moving load, porosity and thermal load on the nanobeam dynamics can be reduced by the effect of the force induced from the directed magnetic field or can be kept within certain desired design limits by controlling the intensity of the magnetic field.

In this paper, a personal air-conditioning system considering the human thermal adaptability is analyzed. Although the conventional personal air-conditioner was proofed to be satisfactory in providing for the thermal comfort, it is being questioned on the term of its energy efficiency. Therefore, it is important and urgent to develop new types of personal air-conditioning system with sustainable control strategy that can ensure energy saving and thermal comfort simultaneously. In this study, we first examined the problems of the conventional personal air-conditioning system with field interview and laboratory experiment in terms of usage, management and thermal comfort, and proposed the energy-saving personal air-conditioning system considering the human thermal adaptation. Then a laboratory experiment was performed to analyze the characteristics of the human thermal comfort under severe indoor thermal conditions, which were controlled using a new personal air-conditioning unit designed according to the proposal. The results help to illustrate the alleviation effect of the new personal air-conditioning system, and indicate that the thermal alleviation time is useful to maintain the thermal comfort with efficient usage of energy.
The purpose of this study is to develop of portable thermal comfort measurement tool for elderly. Using prediction expression of thermal comfort for elderly which derived at previous study, a field studies were conducted. The objects of this survey are old persons over 60 years old and total 296 (male:111 persons, female:145 persons) persons were measured. The actual thermal sensation was compared with predicted thermal sensation calculated with PMV model, and the results shows that there were no correlation between them. Also, appling cheek temperature and hand temperature were useful to predict thermal sensation of elderly people. Especially, predicted thermal sensation using cheek temperature were closely connected with actual thermal sensation of elderly and presented most similar trend to actual thermal sensation.
An accurate analytical equation for the total energy in the framework of the single domain model is used to study the thermal stability of nanostructured synthetic ferrimagnets. Elliptical cells are considered that have lateral dimensions of 160 nm (long axis)$\times$80 nm (short axis) and varying values of thickness asymmetry for the two magnetic layers. The direction of the applied magnetic field, which points to the $45^{\circ}$ direction, is in the opposite direction to the thicker layer magnetization. A significant difference is observed in the applied magnetic field dependencies of the equilibrium magnetic configuration and the magnetic energy barrier when using the simplifying assumption that the self-demagnetizing field is identical in magnitude to the dipole field. At a small thickness asymmetry of 0.2 nm, for example, the magnetic energy barrier is reduced from 68 kT (T=300 K) to 6 kT at the remanent state and a progressive switching behavior changes into a critical behavior, as the simplifying assumption is used. The present results clearly demonstrate the need for an accurate analytical equation for the total energy in predicting the thermal stability of nanostructured synthetic ferrimagnets.
