  • A Simple Large Model (SLM), which can be used to make thermal calculation for a deep geological repository with finite number of HLW canisters, was developed. In order to develop the SLM, a Simple Basic Model (SBM), which will be a unit of the SLM, was optimized first. The SBM was optimized to achieve the same maximum buffer temperature as that of the Detailed Basic Model (DBM) representing the real geometric aspects of the repository. In contrast to the models with the assumption of infinite number of canisters which cannot consider boundary effect, the SLM can model the real repository with finite number of canisters and thus consider the boundary effect. Thermal results from the SLM can be used to evaluate the reliability of the models, which do not consider boundary effect. This model can also be used to simulate the thermal layout design and to analyze the thermal safety of a deep geological repository as well as an underground laboratory.

  • High-strength low-alloy steel is one of the widely used materials in onshore and offshore plant engineering. We investigated the alloying effect of solute atoms in α-Fe based alloy using ab initio calculations. Empirical equations were used to establish the effect of alloying on the Vicker's hardness, screw energy coefficient, and edge dislocation energy coefficient of the steel. Screw and edge energy coefficients were improved by the addition of V and Cr solute atoms. In addition, the addition of trace quantities of V, Cr, and Mn enhanced abrasion resistance. Solute atoms and contents with excellent mechanical properties were selected and their thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior were investigated. The addition of Cr atom is expected to form alloys with low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient. This study provides a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research in low-alloy steel and can be used to guide researchers to explore and develop α-Fe based alloys with improved properties, that can be fabricated in smart and cost-effective manners.

  • The studies were carried out to investigate the effects of esophageal thermal tube for rewarming in the hypothermia in rabbits. Thiry-one rabbits were continuously cooled with femoral arterio-venous bypass circulation to 25.0${\pm}$0.3$^{\circ}C$(profound hypothermia) of rectal temperature. The experiment was consisted with 3 esophageal thermal tube groups perfused with circulation water at 38${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$(low, n=12), 42${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$(medium, n=12), and 45${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$(high, n=7). Esophageal thermla tube specially constructed double-lumen esophageal tube with circulating warm water at respective htermal grade. With this device, rewarming of the rabbits as follows; High-esophageal thermal tube group(45${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$)had a more effect on mean arterial pressure(MAP), heart rate(HR), esophageal temperature, and rectal temperature than others groups, but the circulation water at 45$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ may cause thermal injuries in the esophagus because esophageal temperature increased to 41.1$^{\circ}C$. Medium-esophageal thermal tube group(42${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$) had a more effect on RR than others groups, but the circulation water at 42${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$ may also cause thermal injuries in the esophagus if the temperature exceeds 42$^{\circ}C$ for an extended period of time because its esophageal temperature increased to 39.4$^{\circ}C$. Low-esophageal thermal tube group(38${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$) had a more effect on MAP, RR, and esophageal temperature than others groups. In conclusion, rewarming of the central core in the treatment of profound hypothermia using the esophageal thermal tube perfused with circulation water at 38${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$ appears to be a ideal alternative safety zone of the temperature of circulation water avoiding thermal injury in esophagus causing by out of order or lower precise thermostat of water bath to that of others groups.

  • Several experimental tests to simulate a reflood phase of a cold-leg LBLOCA of the APR1400 have been performed using the ATLAS facility. This paper describes the related experimental results with respect to the thermal-hydraulic behavior in the core and the system-core interactions during the reflood phase of the cold-leg LBLOCA conditions. The present descriptions will be focused on the LB-CL-09, LB-CL-11, LB-CL-14, and LB-CL-15 tests performed using the ATLAS. The LB-CL-09 is an integral effect test with conservative boundary condition; the LB-CL-11 and -14 are integral effect tests with realistic boundary conditions, and the LB-CL-15 is a separated effect test. The objectives of these tests are to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behavior during an entire reflood phase and to provide reliable experimental data for validating the LBLOCA analysis methodology for the APR1400. The initial and boundary conditions were obtained by applying scaling ratios to the MARS simulation results for the LBLOCA scenario of the APR1400. The ECC water flow rate from the safety injection tanks and the decay heat were simulated from the start of the reflood phase. The simulated core power was controlled to be 1.2 times that of the ANS-73 decay heat curve for LB-CL-09 and 1.02 times that of the ANS-79 decay curve for LB-CL-11, -14, and -15. The simulated ECC water flow rate from the high pressure safety injection pump was 0.32 kg/s. The present experimental data showed that the cladding temperature behavior is closely related to the collapsed water level in the core and the downcomer.

  • A thermal printing head is used for heat transcription printing of facsimile or printer. The thermal printing head has multilayered thin films and heaters lined up. Thermal analysis of thermal printing head is important for a design of thermal printing head. Since the heating charateristics of thermal printing head is dependent on the thermal conductivities of multilayerd material, this study made numerical analysis for three dimensional transient heat conduction in mutilayered films by the finite difference method and investigated the effect of various thermal conductivities of thin films. The results of this study will be used to design thermal printing head and select the materials for thermal printing head.

  • In this manuscript, the small scale and thermal effects on vibration behavior of preloaded nanobeams with non-ideal boundary conditions are investigated. The boundary conditions are assumed to allow small deflections and moments and the concept of non-ideal boundary conditions is applied to the nonlocal beam problem. Governing equations are derived through Hamilton's principle and then are solved applying Lindstedt-Poincare technique to derive fundamental natural frequencies. The good agreement between the results of this research and those available in literature validated the presented approach. The influence of various parameters including nonlocal parameter, thermal effect, perturbation parameter, aspect ratio and pre-stress load on free vibration behavior of the nanobeams are discussed in details.

  • In this study, a predictive method which was modified from KIshi's model for the temperature development of concrete was developed by using mineral compounds of clinker and pozzolans. Temperature dependent heat generation of reaction was also considered. Specific heat considering the effect of mix proportion and temperature was calculated with experimental data in the literatures. Thermal conductivity considering the effect of mix proportion and temperature was experimentally investigated. Through this research it was found that the developed method considering thermal properties accurately predicted adiabatic temperature rise of concrete without the experiment. It was also found that the thermal conductivity of concrete could be predicted by the volume ratio of each component of mix proportion and was independent of temperature within the normal climatic range.
