Thermal Modeling of Comet-Like Asteroids

  • Recent analysis on asteroidal thermophysical property revealed that there is a tendency that their thermal inertia decrease with their sizes at least for main belt asteroids. However, little is known about the thermal properties of comet-like bodies. In this work we utilized a simple thermophysical model to calculate the thermal inertia of a bare nucleus of comet P/2006 HR30 (Siding Spring) and an asteroid in comet-like orbit 4015 Wilson-Harrington from AKARI observation data. It is also shown that the determination of their thermal inertia is very sensitive to their spin vector, while the diameter is rather easy to be constrained to a certain range by combining multi-wavelength observational data. Thus, we set diameter and hence the geometric albedo as fixed parameters, and inferred the spin vector and thermal inertia of the targets. Further detailed analyses on these cometary bodies will shed light on our understanding of the detailed surfacial characteristics of them.

  • This study surveys the effects of POY physical properties and processing conditions of belt texturing machine to the textured yarns. The various textured yarns are made with the variations of 1st heater temperature, draw ratio, velocity ratio, and the physical properties of these specimens such as yam linear density, tenacity, breaking strain, and wet and dry thermal shrinkages are measured and analysed with the various processing conditions of texturing machine. Especially, the thermal characteristics of the textured yarns, which are affected at the fabric hands and the determination of the processing conditions in the dyeing and finishing processes, are investigated through the thermal stress analyser and DSC experiments.

  • The RBSPICE (Radiation Belt Storm Probes Ion Composition Experiment) is one of five instrument suites onboard the twin Van Allan Probes (or Radiation Belt Storm Probes; RBSP), launched August 30, 2012 by NASA. One of science targets of RBSPICE instrument is to determine "how changes in that ring current affect the creation, acceleration, and loss of radiation belt particles?". For that purpose, it measures ions and electrons simultaneously. Ion's energy range is from ~20 keV to ~1 MeV and electron's energy channel is from ~35 keV to 1 MeV in order to provide supplementary information about the radiation belts. In this paper, we investigate a reliability of the electron flux measured from the RBSPICE by comparing with ECT (The Energetic Particle, Composition and Thermal Plasma Suite) data. We found there is a critical proton contamination problem in the electron channels of ~ 1MeV of RBSPICE observations during one moderate storm event of Sym H ~ -76 nT on March 1, 2013.

The various textured yarns are made with variation of 1st heater temperature, draw ratio and velocity ratio, and the physical properties of these specimens such as yarn linear density, tensile properties and wet and dry thermal shrinkages are measured and analyzed with POY physical properties and processing conditions of texturing machine. Especially yarn mechanical properties of DTY are analysed with the variation of untwisting tension (T$_2$) on the untwisting part in DTY process and thin and thick DTY yam model are proposed with surging phenomena in DTY process.

  • This study is to perform the effect of urbanization in urban and suburban districts, and to identify regional characters of climate according to the analysis of slope at rise, and descent of temperature and globe temperature, correlation between seasonal temperature analysis, and calculation of degree hour. According to this study, the result is summarized as follows. (1) The average temperature, rated from high to low, consists of residential area, Daegu weather station, intracity, green belt, water-front green belt, and suburban. (2) At the rise and descent of temperature, the result of the slope change of in each point may be one of the useful indexes to be able to perform the regional unique thermal characteristic, including the seasonal urbanization. (3) Although there is a difference between the surface of the earth and ambient environment. The result of the correlation of temperature between summer and winter is that temperature slope in urban districts was higher than in suburban districts, and the difference of slope was unvaried among the four observations in the same city region. (4) To show objectively, regional thermal characteristics in urban and suburban districts, the exponentiation of winter degree hour and summer degree hours were checked. The result of the exponentiation is that the more artificial a region, the lower index.

A Study of a Combined Microwave and Thermal Desorption Process for Contaminated Soil

  • In order to treat soil contaminated with high percentages of water and petroleum, the combined microwave and thermal desorption process was studied, which was composed of the consecutive connection of two pre-treatment processes. For the thickness of the contaminated soil layer on the transfer conveyor belt, the optimal total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal rate was studied with respect to the duration of microwave exposure in the consecutive process combined with thermal desorption. The TPH removal rate when the contaminated soil layer thickness was 1 cm at 6 kW of microwave power was 80%. The removals rates for 2 and 3 cm soil layer thicknesses were both 70%. Under identical experimental conditions, the TPH removal rate for the microwave pre-treatment, when considering the soil particle size, was over 70%. The lowest TPH removal rate was achieved with a particle diameter of 2.35 mm. For contaminated soil with 30% water content, 6 kW and a thermal desorption temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ were the optimal operational conditions for the removal of THP. However, considering the fuel consumption cost, 4 kW and a thermal desorption temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ would be the most economic conditions.

옥천 변성대 변성퇴적암의 K-Ar및 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 연대와 그 의의 (K-Ar and $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar Ages from Metasediments in the Okcheon Metamorphic Belt and their Tectonic Implication)

  • 옥천 변성대 서남부 화산지역과 중부 미원-증평지역 52개의 변성이질-사질암과 5개의 화강암류에 있는 흑운모와 백운모로부터 K-Ar과 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 연대를 구하였다. 서남부 화산지역 보은과 피반령의 2개의 지구조 단위에서 채취한 변성이질-사질암류로부터 구한 흑운모와 백운모 K-Ar과 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 연대는 149-180Ma이다 미원-증평지역의 보은과 피반령의 2개의 지구조 단위에서 채취한 변성이질-사질암류로부터 구한 흑운모와 백운모 K-Ar 연대는 서남부 화산지역에 비해 복잡한 연대분포를 보이는데 백악기 화강암체 주위의 102-105 Ma를 제외하고 142-194Ma(쥬라기), 216-234Ma(삼첩기후기-중기) 및 241-277 Ma(삼첩기초기-페름기 중기)의 범위이다. 하지만 삼첩기부터 페름기까지 연대범위는 보은 단위 북부와 피반령 단위 남부, 즉 증평지역의 옥천변성대 중앙부에서만 구해지며 다른 지역의 연대들은 쥬라기중기에 집중된다. 서남부 화산지역 및 중부 미원-증평지역의 화강암류의 K-Ar과 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 흑운모와 백운모 연대들은 쥬라기중기로 이들은 변성퇴적암으로부터 얻어진 쥬라기중기의 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar과 K-Ar 흑운모와 백운모의 연대와 거의 일치하며 이는 두 암체가 동시에 냉각된 사실을 지시한다. 서남부 화산지역과 중부 미원-증평지역의 보은 단위 및 피반령 단위에서 분리된 탄질물의 $d_{002}$ 값은 모두 각섬암상 범위의 흑연화를 지시하는 3.353-3.359 $\AA$의 매우 좁은 범위에 집중된다. 변성광물군으로 볼 때 녹색편암상의 변성작용을 받은 화산지역의 보은 단위 남부에서도 각섬암상 이상의 고온을 지시하는 탄질물의 $d_{002}$ 값이 나타남은 이들 지역에서 흑운모와 백운모 K-Ar과 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 연대가 쥬라기중기에 집중되는 사실, 이들 지역들 내 광역적으로 관입한 화강암의 관입정치연대와 냉각연대가 쥬라기중기인 사실, 그리고 쥬라기 화강암 주변에 50$0^{\circ}C$ 이상의 저압형 변성대가 형성된 것은 광역적으로 변성광물을 형성한 주변성작용 이후 쥬라기초기(\ulcorner)-증기에 일어난 저압형의 광역적 열변성작용을 강하게 뒷받침한다. 하지만 광역적 열변성작용에 의한 변성광물변화는 화강암접촉부 1-2km 내에서만 인지되며 이는 화강암의 빠른 냉각에 의해 1-2km 밖의 광물군이 변화될 만큼 충분한 기간동안 열이 공급되지 못하였음을 지시한다. 한편, 옥천변성대 증평지역 중망부의 변성이질-사질암으로부터 측정된 흑운모와 백운모 K-Ar과 $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar 연대는 최근에 이들 지역에서 보고된 중압형의 주 광역변성작용시기인 석탄기후기-폐름기초기 이후의 냉각역사들을 잘 대변한다. 특히 옥천변성대 중부 증평지역의 중앙부에서 5개 시료에 대해 구한 흑운모와 백운모 K-Ar 연대인 241-249 Ma와 263-277 Ma는 석탄기후기-폐름기초기 (ca. 280-300 Ma) 옥천변성대의 주변성시기 이후 280-300 Ma부터 263-277 Ma 사이에서 약 3$50^{\circ}C$까지의 빠른 냉각과 263-277 Ma부터 241-249 Ma 사이에서 약 30$0^{\circ}C$까지의 느린 냉각을 지시한다 하지만 왜 삼첩기-폐름기의 연대가 증평지역의 중앙부에만 국한되어 나타나는지에 대한 좀 더 자세한 연구가 필요하다.요하다.

남한의 옥천습곡대에 분포되어 있는 제천화강암체의 열역사 (Thermal history of the Jecheon granite pluton in the Ogcheon Fold Belt, South Korea)

  • 제천습곡대의 제천화강암에 대하여 Rb-Sr, K-Ar 그러고 휫션트랙 등 세 가지 방법으로 다음과 같은 열역사를 규명하였다. 3개의 전암시료와 7개의 광물시료의 Rb과 Sr의 동위원소를 측정하여 얻은 등시선연령은 202.7$\pm$1.9Ma이고, Sr 초생치는 0.7140였다. 12개의 광물시료를 K-Ar 및 휫션트랙법으로 연령측정한 결과 각각의 연령보존온도에 거의 상응하는 광물연령을 얻었다. 연령측정자료로 이 암석의 성인과 암체의 열역사를 해석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 제천화강암은 쥬라기초(약 203 Ma)에 지각물질이 부분용융을 받아서 만들어진 'S-형'의 마그마가, 또는 맨틀기원의 'I-型'마그마와 지각물질의 심한 혼화작용에 의해 만들어진 마그마가 지각 심부 (mesozone 또는 katazone; 약 7~9km)에 관입하였으며, 관입체와 주변암석괴의 온도차 때문에 30$0^{\circ}C$까지는 매우 빨리 냉각되었다. 쥬라기말까지는 주위 암석들과 열적인 평형을 유지하므로써 냉각이 거의 중지되었다가, 백악기초부터 말까지 (140~70 Ma)는 화성활동을 수반한 심한 지구조운동과 활발한 풍화작용 때문에 평균 약 40~60 m/Ma의 상승률과 약 1.4$^{\circ}C$/Ma의 냉각률로 3~7 km 상승하였다. 백악기말부터 삼기초(70~50 Ma)까지는 펀균 약 100~120m/Ma의 상승률과 5$^{\circ}C$/Ma의 냉각률을, 그리고 삼기초 (50 Ma)부터 현재까지는 평균 약 50~60m/Ma의 상승률과 2$^{\circ}C$/Ma의 냉각률을 가지고 각각 상승 및 냉각된 것으로 해석된다.

동래온천의 수리지질학적 특성과 수위변화 (Hydrogeological Characteristics and Groundwater Table Fluctuation of Dongrae Hot Spring)

  • Dongrae is one of the most famous hot spring resort area in the Republic of Korea. The water temperature ranges $50^{\circ}C{\sim}66$. The chemical composition of the thermal water is quite different from normal groundwater. $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ are the main components, measured more than 75%, $Ca^{+{+}}$ is contained about 22% and the other ions such as $SO_4$ or $HCO_3$ are the minor components. The heat source is uprising along the fracture zone of granite which is indicated as a subsurface high temperature belt. During the research period of 1991~1992, the groundwater table was lowered down to the depth of about 100 m according to continuous increase of daily use of thermal water. The groundwater table was fluctuated with an amplitude of day, weak or seasion. The groundwater table was the lowest at 18:00 h in a day and also lowest at the weekend for the week period. There was a relavent relationship between drawdown and the amount of thermal water use on a long term base. To protect such a rapid drawdown of groundwater table, Dongrae resort area is now asked to take strong municipal control for the daily use of thermal water.

Thermal Modeling of Comet-Like Asteroids from AKARI Observation

  • Recent analysis on the thermophysical property of asteroids revealed that their thermal inertia decrease with their sizes at least for main belt asteroids. However, little is known about that of comet-like bodies. In this work we utilized a simple thermophysical model (TPM) to calculate the thermal inertia of a bare nucleus of the comet P/2006 HR30 (Siding Spring) and an asteroid in comet-like orbit 107P/(4015) Wilson-Harrington from AKARI observation data. From five spectroscopic observations of the targets, we find out that the former has thermal inertia of around $2,000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055) and the latter has about $1,000-2000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055 and 0.043, respectively). These are high enough for both of them to deposit water ice at few centimeters depth, and hence it is difficult to say they are cometary based on the results of this study. These values, however, dependent significantly on the errors of observation and the uncertainties of the input parameters, as well as other conditions which are ignored in simple TPM approach, such as shape model and surface roughness. Further detailed analyses on these cometary bodies will shed light on our understanding of the detailed surfacial characteristics of them.
