This paper deals with the power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motor for machine tools according to the rated power and speed. To reduce the fabrication error by thermal strain in rotational machine tools, we calculated the power loss and thermal behavior of induction motors. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed. The inverse design results are compared with the torque-speed characteristic curve in motor's catalog. The power loss are calculated by finite element method(FEM) at rated condition. Secondary, the transient thermal characteristics of induction motors are calculated by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. The inverse design, power loss and thermal behavior calculation for induction motors with various rated power and speed has been performed. Finally, to verify the design and calculation process of induction motor, we implemented the experimental set with 0.4kW 1710rpm class industrial induction motor model. The obtained thermal characteristics of experimental model confirmed that the design and power loss calculation processes are appropriate to the prediction of thermal strain in rotational machine tools.
The desorption kinetics of $Mg_2Cu$ hydride were studied by thermal analysis technique in order to study desorption behavior and to relate thermal desorpton spectra to occuption site of hydrogen. It is suggested that a continuous ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ interface boundary is formed at the initial absorption stage. And the desorption kinetics were analysed by the theoretical equation which was derived on the basis of continous moving boundary model. The number of thermal desorption peak corresponds to the occupation sites of hydrogen. The apparent activation energy for the desorption of $Mg_2Cu$ hydride is 91 KJ/mol.
In this study, we investigated the efficient FE modelling techniques for thermal stress analysis of the exhaust manifold subject to thermo-mechanical cyclic loadings. At first, full engine model was considered to identify the critical locations and their results were compared to failure site shown by the engine bench test. And the equivalent system model was proposed based on the mechanical behavior of the full engine model. The weak areas of both FE models show a good agreement with the experimental crack location. As a result, a simplified modelling methodology was verified to estimate the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the exhaust manifold under thermal shock test condition.
This study aimed at he experimental and finite element analytic investigation of the effect of preheating on he residual stress of weldment. In this study, an autogenous arc welding was used on type 304 stainless steel and MARC as F.E.M. common code was utilized in analysis The analyses include transient and moving heat source and thermal properties as function of temperature. During welding, the thermal cycles of four locations in the weldment were recorded to investigate of the behavior of thermal stress and residual stress. The experimental and analytic results had good coincidence and show that there are two factors influencing the formation of welding residual stress in preheat process. One is the elevation of welding equilibrium temperature and the other is the increase of amount of heat input. The former decrease welding residual stress and the latter increase welding residual stress. Therefore, the cumulative effects result in the welding residual stress not being improved significantly with preheating in 304 stainless steel.
In order to classify the mechanical phenomena of thermal elasto-plastic behavior on the multi-spot welded joints, this study has tried to carry out three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis on them. However, because the shape of multi-spot welded joints is not taxi-symmetric, unlike the cafe of single-spot welded joint, the solution domain for simulation should be three dimension. Therefore, in this paper, firstly, the three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic program is developed by an iso-parametric finite element method. Secondly, from the results analyzed by developed program, this has clarified mechanical characteristics and their production mechanism on single and multi-spot waled joints. Moreover, it has been intended to make clear effects of pitch length on welding residual stresses, plastic strain of multi-spot welded joints.
This work presents a simplified higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) for thermal buckling analysis of cross-ply laminated composite plates. Unlike the existing HSDT, the present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral terms and contains only four unknowns. Governing equations are derived from the principle of the minimum total potential energy. The validity of the proposed theory is evaluated by comparing the obtained results with their counterparts reported in literature. It can be concluded that the proposed HSDT is accurate and simple in solving the thermal buckling behavior of laminated composite plates.
The thermal contact resistance(TCR) of nanosized contact spots has been investigated through a multiscale analysis which considers the resolution of surface topography. A numerical simulation is performed on the finite element model of rough surfaces. Especially, as the contact size decreases below the phonon mean free path, the size dependent thermal conductivity is considered to calculate the TCR. In our earlier model which follows an elastic material, the TCR increases without limits as the number of nanosized contact spots increases in the process of scale variation. However, the elastoplastic contact induces a finite limit of TCR as the scale varies. The results are explained through the plastic behavior of the two contacting models. Furthermore, the effect of air conduction in nanoscale is also investigated.
This paper summarizes the tests performed in the ATLAS facility during its first two years of operation (2007${\sim}$2008). Two categories of tests have been performed successfully: (a) the reflood phase of the large-break loss-of-coolant accidents in a cold leg, and (b) the breaks in one of four direct vessel injection lines. Those tests contributed to understanding the unique thermal-hydraulic behavior, resolving the safety-related concerns and providing an evaluation of the safety analysis codes and methodology for the advanced pressurized water reactor, APR1400. Several important and interesting phenomena have been observed during the tests. In most cases, the ATLAS shows reasonable accident characteristics and conservative results compared with those predicted by one-dimensional safety analysis codes. A wide variety of small-break LOCA tests will be performed in 2009.

Transient dynamic behavior of a sandwich beam under thermal and impulsive loads has been researched in the context of higher-order beam theory. The impulse load of blast type has been enforced on the top exponent of the sandwich beam while it is in a thermal environment. The core of the sandwich beam is cellular with auxetic rectangular pattern, whereas the layers have been built with the incorporation of graphene oxide powder (GOP) and are micromechanically introduced through Halpin-Tsai formulization. Governing equations for the sandwich beam have been solved through inverse Laplace transform style for obtaining the dynamical deflections. The connection of beam deflections on temperature variability, GOP quantity, pulse load situation and core relative density has been surveyed in detail.
