  • Purpose: The current study analyzed trends in thermal insulation performance with aging, and condensation characteristics caused by the former. Method: Thermal insulation and condensation prevention performance of an architecture were assessed using Temperature Difference Ration Inside, or TDRi. Subjects of this quantitative analysis in thermal insulation performance change due to aging included recently constructed apartments and aged apartments older than 40 years. Time series comparison and analysis were conducted to observed changes in the thermal insulation performance and condensation characteristics. Result: Analysis showed that wall insulation performance degraded with aging regardless of fortified insulating material usage or insulating material type, which caused increased danger of condensation. In addition, when fortified insulating material was installed on the connection between the walls, insulation performance degradation was lower compared to cases in which fortified materials were not used. In all cases from 1 to 10, the rate of thermal insulation performance degradation increased after 20 years of aging.

  • To perform the finish grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. The high-precision centerless grinding machine is consisted of the hydrostatic GW and RW spindle systems, hydrostatic RW feeding mechanism, RW swivel mechanism, on-machine GW and RW dressers, and concrete-filled steel bed. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. The reliability of the predicted results is demonstrated by the temperature characteristics measured from the physical prototype. Especially, the predicted and measured results show the fact that the high-precision centerless grinding machine has very stable thermal characteristics.

  • For the purpose to facilitate development of high-speed spindle units (SUs) running on rolling bearings, we have developed a beam element model, algorithms, and software for computer analysis of thermal characteristics of SUs. The thermal model incorporates a model of heat generation in rolling bearings, a model of heat transfer from bearings, and models for estimation of temperature and temperature deformations of SU elements. We have carried out experimental test and made quantitative evaluation of the effect of operation conditions on friction and thermal characteristics of the SUs of grinding and turning machines of typical structures. It is found out that the operation conditions make stronger effect on SU temperatures when rpm increases. A comparison between the results of analysis and experiment proves their good mutual correspondence and allows us to recommend application of the models and software developed for design and research of high-speed SUs running on rolling bearings.

  • This paper describes the finite element analysis(FEA) for the design of electromagnet for Control Element Drive Mechanism(CEDM) in System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor(SMART) and compared with the lifting power characteristics of prototype electromagnet. A thermal analysis was performed for the electromagnet. A model for the thermal analysis of the electromagnet was developed and theoretical bases for the model were established. It is important that the temperature of the electromagnet windings be maintained within the allowable limit of the insulation. since the electromagnet of CEDM is always supplied with current during the reactor operation. So the thermal analysis of the winding insulation which is composed of polyimide and air were performed by finite element method. As a result, it is shown that the characteristics of prototype electromagnet have a good agreement with the results of FEA. The thermal properties obtained here will be used as input for the optimization analysis of the electromagnet.

  • The rapid advances in high power light sources and arrays as encountered in incandescent lamps have induced dramatic increases in die heat flux and power consumption at all levels of high power LED packaging. The lifetime of such devices and device arrays is determined by their temperature and thermal transients controlled by the powering and cooling, because they are usually operated under rough environmental conditions. The reliability of packaged electronics strongly depends on the die attach quality, because any void or a small delamination may cause instant temperature increase in the die, leading sooner or later to failure in the operation. Die attach materials have a key role in the thermal management of high power LED packages by providing the low thermal resistance between the heat generating LED chips and the heat dissipating heat slug. In this paper, thermal transient characteristics of die attach in high power LED package have been studied based on the thermal transient analysis using the evaluation of the structure function of the heat flow path. With high power LED packages fabricated by die attach materials such as Ag paste, solder paste and Au/Sn eutectic bonding, we have demonstrated characteristics such as cross-section analysis, shear test and visual inspection after shear test of die attach and how to detect die attach failures and to measure thermal resistance values of die attach in high power LED package. From the structure function oi the thermal transient characteristics, we could know the result that die attach quality of Au/Sn eutectic bonding presented the thermal resistance of about 3.5K/W. It was much better than those of Ag paste and solder paste presented the thermal resistance of about 11.5${\~}$14.2K/W and 4.4${\~}$4.6K/W, respectively.

  • This paper reports the development of an analysis method in a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) using the finite element method (FEM) coupled with the electromagnetic field of the Preisach model, which represents an additional thermal source due to hysteresis loss and a thermal field. This study focused on thermal analysis relative to hysteresis and copper losses in a SynRM.

  • As the power density and switching frequency increase, thermal analysis of power electronics system becomes imperative. The analysis provides valuable information on the semiconductor rating, long-term reliability. In this paper, thermal distribution of the Non Punchthrough(NPT) Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor has been studied. For analysis of thermal distribution, we obtained results by using finite element simulator, Ansys and thermal distributions form experiments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the thermal and mechanical characteristics of HTS (high temperature superconductor) field magnet according to the design of a small size superconducting rotor without insulation. First, basic design data of superconducting rotor were acquired through electromagnetic analysis. Based on these data, analysis regarding mechanical and thermal characteristics of HTS field magnet was executed. Anisotropic condition was considered in the mechanical characteristics of HTS field magnet. Average values of specific heat and heat conductivity up to 30 K were used during the analysis of thermal characteristics. Analysis results show superior mechanical and thermal characteristics of insulationless HTS field magnet compared with insulated HTS field magnet.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis of a high-speed horizontal machining center with spindle speed of 50,000rpm and feedrate of 120m/fin. The spindle system is designed based on the built-in motor, angular contact ceramic ball bearings, oil-air lubrication and oil-jacket cooling method. The X-axis and Y-axis feeding systems are composed of the linear motors and linear motion guides, and the Z-axis feeding system is composed of the servo-motor, ball screw and linear motion guides. The thermal characteristics such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise, thermal deformation and step response, are estimated based on the finite element model of machining center and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. Especially, the thermal time constant assessed from the step response function is introduced as an index of thermal response characteristics.

  • Thermal displacement of high speed spindle is very important problem to be solved. To solve heat generation and thermal displacement problems that influence on the product accuracy, it is very important to predict thermal characteristics of the spindle and it is positively necessary to select the conditions of cooling, flow rate and preload of bearings. In this paper, 30,000rpm($1.455{\times}10^6DmN$) spindle was designed and produced. The analysis of thermal deformation for heat generation of inner spindle was carried out using commercial program $ANSYS^{(R)}$ and the result was compared with measured data using $LabVIEW^{(R)}$ and SGXI-1600, 1125 and 1126 module. Temperature distribution and thermal displacement according to spindle speed are measured. Using this method, it is possible to predict and to improve thermal characteristic of high speed spindle by control spindle speed, bearing preload and cooling rate.
