랜덤 PP의 반응압출 및 PP/Pulp 복합체 특성에 대한 스티렌과 무수말레인산 함량의 영향 (Effect of Styrene and Maleic Anhydride Content on Properties of PP/Pulp Composites and Reactive Extrusion of Random PP)

  • 랜덤 폴리프로필렌(random polypropylene, rPP)의 무수말레인산(maleic anhydride, MAH) 반응압출에 대한 MAH 함량 및 스티렌/MAH 몰비의 영향을 고찰하기 위해 이축압출기(twin screw extruder)를 이용하여 MAH가 그라프트된 rPP(MAH-g-rPP)를 제조하였다. MAH의 함량은 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 phr이었고, 스티렌/MAH 몰비는 0, 1, 2로 하였으며, 개시제로는 dicumyl peroxide (DCP)가 사용되었다. MAH의 그라프트 정도는 FT-IR을 이용하여 $1700cm^{-1}$ 근처에서 나타나는 카르보닐기(C = O) 신축진동 피크의 존재 여부를 통해 확인하였으며, $3000cm^{-1}$ 근처의 C-H 신축진동을 기준으로 하여 정량한 결과 그라프트 반응이 MAH 함량이 3.0 phr까지 증가하는 경향을 보여주었고, 스티렌 몰비는 1.0일 때 최적을 나타내었다. MAH-g-rPP와 MAH-g-rPP가 5.0 phr 포함된 PP/MAH-g-rPP/pulp 복합체의 열적특성, 결정화 특성 등을 시차주사열용량분석기(DSC), 열중량분석기(TGA), X-선 회절분석(XRD), 편광현미경(POM) 등을 이용하여 관찰하였다. 비등온 결정화온도는 rPP-g-MAH가 첨가되었을 때 감소하는 경향을 나타내었고, PP/MAH-g-rPP/pulp 복합체의 인장특성과 인장시험 후 파단면의 SEM을 측정한 결과, MAH 함량 1.0 wt%, 스티렌/MAH 몰비 1.0일 때 상용화제로의 역할이 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 복합체의 가공성 비교를 위해 복소 점도와 전단박하(shear thinning) 정도를 동적유변측정기를 이용하여 측정하였다. 상용화제를 가지는 복합체의 경우 낮은 멱수 법칙 지수(n)를 보여주었다.

취반된 흑미의 휘발성 향기 성분 (Volatile Flavor Components in Cooked Black Rice)

  • 현재 재배되고 있는 흑미 중 수원 415호와 진도를 n-pentane과 diethylether 혼합용액(1:1, v/v)을 추출용매로 사용하여 SDE방법으로, 취반된 흑미로부터 휘발성 향기 성분을 추출하였다. 이 향기 추출물을 정제 농축하여 GC와 GC/MS로 분석한 후 GC 분석에 의한 RI 및 GC/MS 분석에 의한 mass spectrum을 표준물질의 분석 자료와 비교, 확인함으로써 휘발성 향기 성분을 동정하였고, 내부 표준물질을 이용하여 이들 성분을 정량하였다. 수원415호와 진도에서 각각 91, 82종의 화합물이 분리되었다. 수원415호에서는 alcohol류 26종, ketone류 15종, ester류 11종, aldehyde류 10종, hydrocarbon류 9종, acid류 5종, 황화합물 9종, 질소화합물 3종, furan 화합물 3종이었고 동정된 물질 중에서 hexadecanoic acid, acetic acid, 1,2-ethanediol, guaiacol, ethyl acetate, 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, ethanol, ethyl hexadecanoate, methyl 9,12- octadecadienoate, hexanol, ethyl formate, hexanal, 2-pentanone이 수원 415호 흑미의 주요한 성분으로 확인되었다. 진도 흑미에서 분리 동정된 성분으로는 alcohol류 28종, ketone류 14종, ester류 12종, aldehyde류 9종, hydrocarbon류 5종, acid류 4종, 황화합물 4종, 질소화합물 3종, furan 화합물 3종이었고, hexadecanoic acid, guaiacol, acetic acid, 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, hydroperoxy pentane, ethyl acetate, methyl 9,12-octadecadienoate, 2-nonanone, ethyl hexadecanoiate, ethyl formate, ethyl 9-octadecenoate, hexanol, 2-pentanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol이 동정되어 이러한 성분들이 진도 흑미의 주요한 성분으로 확인되었다. 미량이지만 향기의 발현에 영향을 미칠 것으로 생각하는 1-acetyl-2-pyrrolidone과 ${\alpha}-pyrrolidone$이 동정되었다.

식물성 천연 항균복합소재 처리에 의한 마늘종 및 돈육장조림의 저장 효과 (Preservative Effect of Garlic Stalk or Pork Cooked in Soy Sauce by the Addition of Botanical Antimicrobial Agent-Citrus and Red Ginseng Mixture)

  • 본 실험에서는 식품의 미생물작용에 의한 변질의 저해 효과가 뛰어난 식물성 천연항균제품(Botanical Antimicrobial Agent-Citrus product)에 홍삼추출물을 첨가하여 조제한 식물성 천연 항균복합소재(Botanical Antimicrobial Agent-Citrus and Red Ginseng extract mixture BAACG)의 항균력 검사, 열 및 pH안정성, 미생물 세포막의 형태 및 기능성 변화를 검토하고 BAACG를 가공 반찬류인 마늘 종무침과 돈육장조림 제조원료중에 농도별로 처리하고, 상온에 저장하면서 오염 미생물 총균수 및 대장균수의 변화와 아울러, 제품의 외관상 변화를 무처리 대조구와 비교하면서 조사하였다. BAACG는 광범위한 영역의 미생물에 대하여 뚜렷한 항균력을 보였으며, 넓은 범위의 열 및 pH에서 안정성을 나타냈다. 또한, 주사전자현미경 촬영사진의 결과, BAACG를 처리한 균체 세포는 세포막 및 세포벽 기능이 파괴되어 세포 내용물이 균체외부로 유출되어 균체의 생육이 억제되며 성장을 저해 또는 사멸시키는 것으로 나타났다 반찬류에 BAACG를 처리하여 선도유지기간을 연장할 수 있는지를 판정하는 실험에서, 대장균수는 모든 처리구에서 BAACG의 첨가에 의해 성장이 억제되었으며 농도가 증가시킬수록 균 증식 억제 효과가 뚜렷하였으며, 총균수도 압도적으로 낮은값을 보여주었다. 외관상의 변화와 상품가치를 측정한 결과는 마늘종무침의 경우, 대조구에서는 5일이 경과한 후부터 부패가 시작되어 1주일이 경과 후에는 강한 부패취와 아울러, 점질성 물질의 생성으로 상품가치가 크게 떨어진 상태였다. 돈육 장조림의 대조구의 경우, 저장 3일째부터 강한 부패취와 함께, 점질성 물질이 형성되어 관능적으로도 부패 상태를 인지할 수 있었다. 이에 반하여, BAACG처리 시험구의 경우, 일정 처리농도 이상에서는 점질성 물질의 형성과 부패취가 미약하여 선도 유지 효과가 있음을 외관상으로도 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과로 볼 때, BAACG의 처리는 가공 반찬류의 저장성을 최대한 연장할 수 있음을 확인하였고, 반찬류뿐만 아니라, 여러 식품군에 다양하게 적용할 수 있음을 시사해 주었다.

롤투롤 공정의 이해 및 동향 (Understanding and Trends of Roll-to-Roll Operation)

  • 롤투롤 공정은 제조 환경에서 필수적인 위치를 차지하고 있으며, 그 중요성은 수많은 산업에 걸쳐 반향을 일으키고 있다. 이 다목적 기술 플랫폼은 다양한 공정 방법을 포괄하고 광범위한 재료 범주를 수용하여 현대 생산의 초석이 되고 있다. 이 광범위한 영역에서 일반적으로 사용되는 두 가지 코팅 기술인 슬롯 다이와 그라비아 코팅 방식은 완벽한 코팅을 구현하는 정밀도와 효율성으로 각광받고 있다. 또한 건조 공정은 열 건조, 적외선(IR) 건조, 자외선(UV) 건조 방식에 크게 의존하여 재료를 액체 또는 반액체 상태에서 바로 사용할 수 있는 고체 제품으로 신속하게 전환한다. 롤투롤 공정의 중요성은 제조 공정을 간소화하고 비용을 절감하며 제품 품질을 향상시킬 수 있다는 점이 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 일반적인 롤투롤 공정 방법의 복잡성에 대해 자세히 살펴봄으로써 이러한 중요성의 깊이를 파악하고자 한다. 엄격한 연구와 세심한 데이터 수집을 통해 이러한 기술이 다양한 산업을 형성하고 제조 세계를 발전시키는 데 중추적인 역할을 하는 것을 조명하고자 한다. 롤투롤 공정의 중요성을 이해함으로써 롤투롤 공정의 잠재력을 최대한 활용하고 생산 혁신과 우수성을 위한 기반을 마련할 수 있을 것이다.

폭발물 감지 시스템 개발을 위한 TNT 분자 흡착에 대한 WSe2 소자의 전기적 반응 특성 평가 (Electrical response of tungsten diselenide to the adsorption of trinitrotoluene molecules)

  • 분자 단위의 폭발물질을 탐지하기 위하여, 고감도 응답성 센서의 개발이 요구되고 있다. 2차원 반도체는 얇은 적층형 구조를 가져 전하 캐리어가 축적될 수 있어, 전하 캐리어의 급격한 신호 변조 특성을 기대할 수 있다. WSe2 반도체 소재의 TNT(Trinitrotoluene) 폭발물질에 대한 탐지 효용성을 연구하기 위해, CVD(Chemical Vapor Deposition) 공정을 이용해 WSe2 박막을 합성하여 FET(Field Effect Transistors)을 제작하였다. 라만 분석과 FT-IR(Fourier-transform infrared) 분광 결과는 TNT 분자의 흡착과 WSe2 결정질의 구조적 전이 분석 정보를 나타내었다. 또한, WSe2 표면의 TNT 분자 흡착 전후의 전기적 특성을 비교하였다. TNT 도포 전, WSe2 FET에 백 게이트 바이어스로 -50 V를 인가함에 따라 0.02 μA의 최대 전류 값이 관측되었고, 0.6%(w/v) TNT 용액을 도포하였을 때 Drain 전류는 p-type 거동을 보이면서 0.41 μA의 최대 전류 값을 기록하였다. 이후 On/Of f Ratio 및 캐리어 이동도, 히스테리시스를 추가적으로 평가하였다. 본 연구에서는 WSe2의 TNT 분자에 대한 고감도와 신속한 응답성을 통해 폭발물질 탐지 센서 소재로서의 가능성을 제시하였다.

노화에 따른 Zr-Ni계 지연관의 열 특성 및 화학적 구조 변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on change in thermal properties and chemical structure of Zr-Ni delay system by aging)

  • 장기 저장된 탄약은 화공품의 노화에 따른 절심현상(연소 중단)으로 인해 불발 등의 악작용이 발생하게 된다. 탄약에 주로 사용되는 화공품은 초기 에너지를 부여하는 뇌관 화약과 뇌관 화약의 에너지를 받아 지연제를 점화시켜주는 점화제, 일정 시간 동안 연소를 지연시켜주는 지연제 등을 사용한다. 이러한 형태의 탄약에는 뇌관화약, 점화제, 지연제의 순으로 충전되는데 충전된 순서대로 에너지가 전달되어 기능을 발휘하게 된다. 탄약의 절심 현상은 점화제의 연소중단, 점화제로부터 지연제로의 불충분한 에너지 전달, 지연제의 연소 중단 등에 의해 발생하는데, 이러한 현상이 나타나는 요인으로는 각 구성 성분의 낮은 순도,부적절한 혼합비, 입자성 성분의 입자 크기 및 분포, 바인더의 종류, 각 구성 성분의 혼합방법, 장기저장시 흡입된 수분에 의한 구성성분의 가수분해 및 고온에 의한 구성 성분의 화학적 변화 등이 의심된다. 본 연구의 목적은 Zr-Ni계 지연관 결합체를 장기 보관했을 때 점화제 및 지연제에서 나타나는 연소중단현상의 원인을 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 현장에서 일어나는 절심현상과 일치하는 시험법을 개발하였고, 장-흐름 분획법(field-flow fractionation, FFF)을 이용하여 입자성 성분의 입자 크기와 분포를 조사하였으며, 장기보관에 의한 점화제와 지연제의 화학적인 변화 메커니즘을 조사하기 위하여 열분석(differential scanning calorimetry) 및 XRD, XPS (X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy)분석을 수행하였다. XPS 와 XRD data 에 의하면, 점화제의 경우 산소의 1s 결합에너지 위치에서 M-O,M-OH 피크들이 관찰되었다. 이는 산화에 의한 새로운 생성물이 생성되었음을 의미한다. 즉 점화제의 산화에 의해 방출 열량이 감소하여 절심(연소 중단) 현상이 야기된다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

사과원토양(園土壤)의 광물학적특성(鑛物學的特性)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on the Mineralogical Characteristics of Apple Orchard Soils)

  • 화강암(花崗岩), 화강섬록암(花崗閃綠岩), 섬록암(閃綠岩), Arkose 질사암(質砂岩), 및 Tertiary 혈암(頁岩)등에 유래(由來)된 사과과수원(果樹園) 11개처(個處)의 하층토(下層土)에 대(對)해서 광물(鑛物)의 풍화과정(風化過程)과 토양생성작용(土壤生成作用) 및 광물조성(鑛物組成)과의 관계(關係)를 밝히기 위(爲)하여 일(一), 이차광물(二次鑛物)에 대(對)한 광물학적(鑛物學的) 연구(硏究)를 시도(試圖)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 일차광물(一次鑛物)로서 Quartz, Changed-feldspar, Plagioclase, Alkali-feldspar 등은 거의 모든 시료(試料)에 존재(存在)하였고, 또 시료(試料)에 따라 Hornblende, Biotite, Muscovite 및 Plant opal를 가진 것도 있었으며, 그 밖에 양(量)은 적으나마 Pyroxene group, Tourmaline, Epidote, Cyanite, Magnetite, Volcanic glass 및 Zircon 등도 찾아 볼 수 있었다. 토양(土壤)의 광물학적조성(鑛物學的組成)은 모재(母材)의 특성(特性)을 어느정도(程度) 반영(反映)하고 있어서, 주(主)로 Granite, Granodiorite, Diorite, Arkose 또는 그들의 풍화생성물(風化生成物)이 서로 혼입(混入)된 것에 유래(由來)된 것으로 추정(推定)할 수 있었다. 2. 점토광물조성(粘土鑛物組成)은 팽창형(膨脹型) 또는 비팽창형(非膨脹型) ${\AA}14$광물(鑛物), Illite 및 Kaolin 광물(鑛物)이 주성분(主成分)으로 되고, 시료(試料)에 따라서는 Chlorite, Christobalite, Gibbsite와 일차광물(一次鑛物)인 Quartz 및 Feldspar를 가지고 있었으나 양적(量的)으로는 모재(母材)에 따라 차(差)가 있었다. 3. 비팽창형(非膨脹型) $14{\AA}$광물(鑛物)로는 2, 8면체(面體) Vermiculite가 주(主)이고, 그 층격자간(層格子間)에 Gibbsite 모양의 수산화(水酸化) Aluminium 층(層)을 끼워 있는 것으로 추정(推定)된다. 4. Arkose 또는 Tertiary 혈암계암석(頁岩系岩石) 풍화생성물(風化生成物)에 유래(由來)된 것은 Montmorillonite가 주성분(主成分)이 였다. 그러나 Arkose만으로 된 것은 Kaolin 광물(鑛物)과 Vermiculite가 주(主)이고, 또 산성암풍화생성물(酸性岩風化生成物)이 주(主)로 된 곳은 Kaolin 광물(鑛物)을 주성분(主成分)으로 하는 것과, Kaolin 광물(鑛物) 및 Vermiculite를 주성분(主成分)으로 하는 두 Group로 크게 나눌 수 있었다.

드론을 활용한 도시폭염지역의 열섬 저감기법 효과 비교 분석 (Comparative Analysis of the Effects of Heat Island Reduction Techniques in Urban Heatwave Areas Using Drones)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 EPA(Environmental Protection Agency)에서 활용하는 도시열섬 저감기법(옥상녹화, 쿨루프, 차열도료포장 및 차열블럭포장 등)을 연구지역에 적용하여 토지피복 객체간 비교 분석으로 실질적 효과 파악을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해, 경상남도 김해시 장유무계지역을 연구지역으로 선정하고, 드론 DJI Matrice 300 RTK에 열적외선 영역센서 FLIR Vue Pro R과 가시광선 영역센서인 H20T 1/2.3" CMOS, 12 MP를 활용하여 계측하였다. 계측 일정은 7월 27일 아침 7시 15분부터 저녁 7시 15분까지 1시간 30분 간격으로 총 9장의 열지도와 비교군 토지피복 객체(711개) 열섬 저감기법 토지피복 객체(180개) 를 추출하였다. 추출한 180개의 객체 별 효과값 산출 후, 기법 종류별 효과를 종합한 결과 주간시간 기준 쿨루프 4.71℃, 옥상녹화 3.40℃, 차열도료포장 0.43℃, 차열블록포장 -0.85℃의 열섬 저감효과가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 시간대별 효과 비교 결과 촬영일 기준 남중시각 인근인 13시에서 기법들의 열섬 저감효과가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 해당 시각을 지난 13시에서 14:30분 사이에 쿨루프 -8.19℃, 옥상녹화 -5.56℃, 차열도료포장 -1.78℃, 차열블록포장 -1.57℃의 온도 저감의 효율이 변화하였다. 본 연구는 드론과 같은 고해상도 영상을 활용하여 도시열섬 저감기법을 검증한 사례 연구이다. 향후, 고정밀 공간해상도를 가지는 초소형 위성 등의 직접적인 활용 예시가 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

  • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70$\pm$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32$\pm$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The CF 15-11 HFDs which failed APD test did not show changes in the UFR compared to normal dialyzers indicating that APD is a more sensitive test than UFR test to evaluate the integrity of the fibers. 30527 T00401030527 ^x For quantitative measurement of reflected light from a clinical diagnostic strip, a prototype old reflectance photometer was designed. The strip loader and cassette were made to obtain more accurate reflectance parameters. The strip was illuminated at 45˚c through optical fiber and the intensity of reflected light was determined at rectanguLat angle using a photodiode. The kubelka-munk coefficient and reflection optical density were determined ar four different wavelengths(500, 550, 570 and 610nm) for blood glucose strip. For higher concentration than 300mg/41 about glucose, a saturation state of abforbance was observed at 500, 550 and 570nm. The correlation between glucose concentration and parameters was the best at 610nm. 30535 T00401030535 ^x Radiation-induced fibrosarcoma tumors were grown on the flanks of C3H mice. The mice were divided into two groups. One group was injected with Photofrin II, intravenously (2.5mg/kg body weight). The other group received no Photofrin II. Mice from both groups were irradialed for approximately 15 minutes at 100, 300, or 500 mW/cm2 with the argon (488nm/514.5 nm), dye(628nm) and gold vapor (pulsed 628 nm) laser light. A photosensitizer behaved as an added absorber. Under our experimental conditions, the presence of Photolfrin II increased surface temperature by at least 40% and the temperature rise due to 300 mW/cm2 irradiation exceeded values for hyperthermia. Light and temperature distributions with depth were estimated by a computer model. The model demonstrated the influence of wavelength on the thermal process and proved to be a valuable tool to investigate internal temperature rise. 30536 T00401030536 ^x We investigated the structural geometry of thirty-eight Korean femurs. The purpose of this study is to identify major geometrical differences between Korean femurs 3nd others that we believe belong to Caucasians so that we would be able to get insights into the femoral component design that fits Asians including Koreans. We utilized computerized tomography (CT) images of femurs extracted from cadavers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh IIci computer.The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal flare index are greater by the amount of approximately 8˚ and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round, and (3) the distance between the teaser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shelter by about 15 mm. The results suggested that the femoral component suitable for Asians should be different from the currently-used components designed and manufactured mostly by European or American companies. 30537 T00401030537 ^x It is well known that nonlinear propagation characteristics of the wave in the tissue may give very useful information for the medical diagnoisis. In this paper, a new method to detect nonlinear propagation characteristics of the internal vibration in the tissue for the low frequency mechanical vibration by using bispectral analysis is proposed. In the method, low frequency vibration of f0( = 100Hz) is applied on the surface of the object, and the waveform of the internal vibration x (t) is measured from Doppler frequency modulation of silmultaneously transmitted probing ultrasonic waves.   • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70${\pm}$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32${\pm}$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh IIci computer.The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal flare index are greater by the amount of approximately 8˚ and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round, and (3) the distance between the teaser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shelter by about 15 mm.
