  • This research presents an investigation on the thermal buckling resistance of FGM plates having parabolic-concave thickness variation exposed to uniform and gradient temperature change. An analytical formulation is derived and the governing differential equation of thermal stability is solved numerically using finite difference method. A specific function of thickness variation is introduced where it controls the parabolic variation intensity of the thickness without changing the original material volume. The results indicated that the loss ratio in buckling resistance is the same for any gradient temperature profile. Influencing geometrical and material parameters on the loss ratio in the thermal resistance buckling are investigated which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • Broad writing on the examination of sandwich structures mirrors the significance of incorporating thermal loadings during their investigation stage. In the current work, an endeavor has been made to concentrate on sandwich FGM beams' bending behaving under thermal loadings utilizing shear deformation theory. Temperature-dependent material properties are used during the analysis. The formulation includes the transverse displacement field, which helps better predict the behavior of thick FGM beams. Three-different thermal profiles across the thickness of the beam are assumed during the analysis. The study has been carried out on both symmetric and unsymmetric sandwich FGM beams. It has been observed that the bending behavior of sandwich FGM beams is impacted by the temperature profile to which it is subjected. Power-law exponent and thickness of core also affect the behavior of the beam.

  • This paper presents a reliability assessment model for the power semiconductors used in wind turbine power converters. In this study, the thermal loadings at different timescales of wind speed are considered. First, in order to address the influence of long-term thermal cycling caused by variations in wind speed, the power converter operation state is partitioned into different phases in terms of average wind speed and wind turbulence. Therefore, the contributions can be considered separately. Then, in regards to the reliability assessment caused by short-term thermal cycling, the wind profile is converted to a wind speed distribution, and the contribution of different wind speeds to the final failure rate is accumulated. Finally, the reliability of an actual power converter semiconductor for a 2.5 MW wind turbine is assessed, and the failure rates induced by different timescale thermal behavior patterns are compared. The effects of various parameters such as cut-in, rated, cut-out wind speed on the failure rate of power devices are also analyzed based on the proposed model.

  • Recently, it has been observed in the East Sea that temperature increases below the thermocline, and dissolved oxygen increase in the intermediate layer but decrease below it. The layer of minimum dissolved oxygen deepens and the bottom homogeneous layer in oxygen becomes thinner. It emerges very probably that these changes are induced by the mode change of deep water formation associated with global warming. To further support this hypothesis, a one-dimensional model experiment is performed. First, a thermal profile is obtained by injecting a cold and high oxygen deep water into the bottom layer, say the bottom mode. Then, two thermal profiles are obtained from the bottom mode profile by assuming that either all the deep water introduce into the intermediate layer has been initiated, say the intermediate mode, or that only a part of the deep water has been initiated into the intermediate layer, say the intermediate-bottom mode. The results, from the intermediate-bottom mode experiment are closest to the observed results. They show quite well the tendency for oxygen to increase in the intermediate layer and the simultaneous thinning of the bottom homogeneous layer in oxygen. Therefore, it can be said that the recently observed slow variation of the thermal structure might be associated with changes in the deep water formation from the bottom mode to the intermediate-bottom mode.

  • Losses on the turbine consist of the mechanical loss, tip clearance loss, secondary flow loss and blade profile loss etc.,. More than 60 % of total losses on the turbine is generated by the two latter loss mechanisms. These losses are directly related with the reduction of turbine efficiency. In order to provide a new design methodology for reducing losses and increasing turbine efficiency, a two-dimensional axial-type turbine blade shape is modified by the optimization process with two-dimensional compressible flow analysis codes, which are validated by the experimental results on the VKI turbine blade. A turbine blade profile is selected at the mean radius of turbine rotor using on a heavy duty gas turbine, and optimized at the operating condition. Shape parameters, which are employed to change the blade shape, are applied as design variables in the optimization process. Aerodynamic, mechanical and geometric constraints are imposed to ensure that the optimized profile meets all engineering restrict conditions. The objective function is the pitchwise area averaged total pressure at the 30% axial chord downstream from the trailing edge. 13 design variables are chosen for blade shape modification. A 10.8 % reduction of total pressure loss on the turbine rotor is achieved by this process, which is same as a more than 1% total-to-total efficiency increase. The computed results are compared with those using 11 design variables, and show that optimized results depend heavily on the accuracy of blade design.

  • The performance of a solar water heater incorporating evacuated tubes was evaluated using a transient simulation program, TRNSYS. Simulations were performed for $60^{\circ}C$ of hot water load temperature and for 280 liter of daily hot water volumes and three 400 liter of storage tank volumes. Three patterns of daily hot water consumption profile were used in the present study (morning, lunch and evening). The results show that the increase in solar fraction depends on the load profile, as well as the collector efficiency coefficient. Hot water draw profile has a large effect on the performance of the SDHWS, the morning load profile has the highest solar fraction. The annual solar fraction of the system, at the weather conditions of Jinju is approximately 84% at lunch load pattern, the 280 kg of load volume, 400 kg of tank volume and the $60^{\circ}C$ of load temperature.

  • Research activity in the III-V nitrides materials system has increased markedly in the past several years ever since high-brightness blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) became commercially available. Despite of excellent optical properties of the GaN, however, inherently poor thermal property of the sapphire used as a substrate material n these devices may lead to thermal degradation of devices, especially during their high power operation. Therefore, dependable thermal analysis and packaging schemes of GaN-based LEDs are necessary for solid lighting applications under high power operation. In this paper, emphasis will be placed upon thermal design of GaN-based LEDs. Thermal measurements of LEDs on chip and packaging scale were performed using the liquid crystal thermographic technology and micro thermocouples for different bias conditions. By a series of optical arrangement, hot spots with specific transition temperatures were obtained with increasing input power. Thermal design of LEDS was made using the finite element method and analytical unit temperature profile approach with optimal boundary conditions. The experimental results were compared to the simulated data and the results agree well enough for the establishment of dependable prediction of thermal behavior in these devices. The paper will present a more detailed understanding of the thermal analysis of the GaN-based blue and white LEDs for high power applications.

  • A reversible axial flow fan called jet fan has been widely used for longitudinal ventilation in road tunnels to secure a safe and comfortable environment cost-effectively. As shifting the flow direction is usually made by only switching the rotational direction of an electric motor due to heavy duty, rotor blades having identical aerodynamic performance for bidirectional flow should be necessary. However, such aerodynamically desirable blades haven't been developed sufficiently, since most of the related studies have been done from the viewpoint of unidirectional flow. In the present paper, we demonstrate a method to profile the blade section suitable for bidirectional flow, which is validated by studying the aerodynamic performances of rotor blades of a two-stage jet fan experimentally and numerically.

  • Thermal gradient chemical vapor infiltration (TG-CVI) process, which is one of the CVI techniques to densify a porous fiber preform, requires for a heater to have uniform surface temperature distribution. Thus, it is essential to design the shape of the heater and to predict the temperature distribution when the heater has a profile which is not a simple cylinder. In this study, an analytical method has been used to design the inner profile of a conical heater showing uniform temperature distribution, if its outer shape is specified. Temperature distribution on the heater surface has been calculated with the finite difference method and compared with the experimental results. When a heater had a combined profile with a large cone and a small cylinder, temperature was higher in the cylindrical part. To reduce the temperature difference between these areas, a hole-machining method has been proposed including other possible ones. A shape design and optimization program has been made to improve the temperature uniformity of the TG-CVI heater better than that designed with the analytical method.

  • Unlike conventional fuel types, fuel constituent redistribution and sodium intrusion into the fuel slug are the unique phenomena of the irradiated metallic fuel. A thermal calculation model on metallic U-10 wt.%Zr fuel rod for LMRs is developed with considerations given to these phenomena. The amount of constituent redistribution is estimated based on the thermotransport process. The temperature profile of fuel slug is predicted by taking into account of Zr redistribution, porosity formation and sodium logging effects. A sample calculation is performed and compared to experimental data in literature. As a result, the predicted redistribution and temperature profile are well agreed with experimental data, assuming that 15 times increment of ex-reactor diffusivity, $Q_{r}$ $^{*}$ is -50 kJ/mole and sodium is infiltrated only outside of the fuel slug. Furthermore, the redistribution effects on fuel integrity and fuel temperature profile are discussed.d.
