The intention of this paper is to provide realistic values of design thermal loads applicable to composite box girder bridges on the basis of the statistical analysis of long-term measured temperature data. For this purpose, temperatures were recorded at a newly constructed composite box girder bridge during about 20 months. Before analyzing the extreme values, major thermal loading parameters that characterize the temperature profile are defined, and a seasonal behavior of those is examined in detail. The limit distributions of the thermal loading parameters are then determined by the tail-equivalence method, and the thermal loading parameters corresponding to selected return period are calculated. Finally, the results are compared to the specifications suggested in a current design code for thermal loads, and it is concluded that the current design code is unsuitable for representing the self-equilibrated thermal stresses in composite bridges, and the horizontal temperature difference which is not suggested in current design code should be taken Into account in particular cases.
This article investigates the response of Integral Abutment Bridges (IAB) when subjected to a sequence of seasonal thermal loading of the deck followed by ground seismic shaking in the longitudinal direction. Particular emphasis is placed on the effect of pre-seismic thermal Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) on the seismic performance of the IAB, as well as on the ability of various backfills configurations, to minimize the unfavorable SSI effects. A series of two-dimensional numerical analyses were performed for this purpose, on a complete backfill-integral bridge-foundation soil system, subjected to seasonal cyclic thermal loading of the deck, followed by ground seismic shaking, employing ABAQUS. Various backfill configurations were investigated, including conventional dense cohesionless backfills, mechanically stabilized backfills and backfills isolated by means of compressive inclusions. The responses of the investigated configurations, in terms of backfill deformations and earth pressures, and bridge resultants and displacements, were compared with each other, as well as with relevant predictions from analyses, where the pre-seismic thermal SSI effects were neglected. The effects of pre-seismic thermal SSI on the seismic response of the coupled IAB-soil system were more evident in cases of conventional backfills, while they were almost negligible in case of IAB with mechanically stabilized backfills and isolated abutments. Along these lines, reasonable assumptions should be made in the seismic analysis of IAB with conventional sand backfills, to account for pre-seismic thermal SSI effects. On the contrary, the analysis of the SSI effects, caused by thermal and seismic loading, can be disaggregated in cases of IAB with isolated backfills.

Fatigue life of a Piston for large liquid Petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) bus engines is analyzed considering effects of cooling condition parameters : temperature of cooling water, and heat transfer coefficients at oil gallery and bottom surface of piston head. Temperature of the piston is analyzed with varying cooling conditions Stresses of the piston from two load cases of pressure loading. and pressure and thermal loading are analyzed Fatigue life under repeated peak pressure and thermal cycle is analyzed by the strain-life theory. For the two load cases, required loading cycles for engine life are defined, and loading cycles to failure and partial damages are calculated. Based on the resulting accumulated fatigue usage factors, endurance of the piston is evaluated and effects of varying cooling condition Parameters are discussed.

The assignment of boundary conditions for the piston thermal loading analysis in internal combustion engine has been tested using the thermal circuit method with an engine simulation program. In an attempt to examine the accuracy of the employed boundary condition, another thermal boundary condition has been sought for through the electrolytic tank analogue method. Comparison of calculated temperature distributions obtained from these two boundary conditions with measured temperature values reveals that the electrolytic tank analogue method gives excellent agreement. However, the thermal circuit method has been found to be reasonable for practical applications, if modified partially.
This paper investigated bending of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nanobeams under hygro-thermal loading embedded in Winkler-Pasternak foundation based on nonlocal elasticity theory. The governing equations of nonlocal nanobeams in the framework parabolic third order beam theory are obtained using Hamilton's principle and solved implementing an analytical solution. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of the nonlocal parameter, hygro-thermal-loadings, magneto-electro-mechanical loadings and aspect ratio on the deflection characteristics of nanobeams. It is found that boundary conditions, nonlocal parameter and beam geometrical parameters have significant effects on dimensionless deflection of nanoscale beams.
This paper focuses on post-buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams with various boundary conditions subjected to a non-uniform thermal loading by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Six types of support conditions for the beams are considered. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. As far as the authors know, there is no study on the post-buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams under uniform and non-uniform thermal loading considering full geometric non-linearity investigated by using finite element method. The convergence studies are made and the obtained results are compared with the published results. In the study, the relationships between deflections, end rotational angles, end constraint forces, thermal buckling configuration, stress distributions through the thickness of the beams and temperature rising are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.

To measure of thermal loading in the combustion chamber of hydrogen engine with dual injection, instantaneous wall-surface temperature and unsteady heat flux of the cylinder head are measured and analyzed. The maximum wall surface temperature is shown in direct injection region which has large heat supplied. Partial and spatial temperatures have slight deviation in transient region of injection, though injection method change suddenly. All of thermal characteristics such as instantaneous temperature, temperature swing and heat flux of hydrogen engine with dual injection are remarkably higher than those of gasoline engine. It means necessity of additional countermeasure of thermal loading.
In previous study, the decrease and recovery of total stiffness in welded structure was discussed on the basis of experimental examination through tensile loading and unloading test of welded specimen. The recovery of structure stiffness was caused by the release of welding residual stress through mechanical loading. In this study, analysis model that is indispensable for the effective application of MSR method was established on the basis of test and measurement result. Thermal elasto-plastic analysis for welding process was performed by non-coupled analysis. Analysis results of welding process were transfer to elasto-plastic model for tensile loading & unloading by restart technique. In elasto-plastic analysis model for mechanical loading & unloading, hardening appearance of weld metal was considered by rezoning technique and tying technique was used for JIG condition of test machine.

The flow of cooling water in a passive containment cooling system (PCCS), used to remove heat released in design basis accidents from a concrete containment of light water nuclear power plant, was conducted in order to investigate the thermo-fluid equilibrium among many parallel tubes of PCCS. Numerical simulations of the subcooled boiling flow within a coolant loop of a PCCS, which will be installed in innovative pressurized-water reactor (PWR), were conducted using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the RPI model were used for turbulence closure and subcooled flow boiling, respectively. As the first step, the simplified geometry of PCCS with 36 tubes was modeled in order to reduce computational resource. Even and uneven thermal loading conditions were applied at the outer walls of parallel tubes for the simulation of the coolant flow in the PCCS at the initial phase of accident. It was observed that the natural circulation maintained in single-phase for all even and uneven thermal loading cases. For uneven thermal loading cases, coolant velocity in each tube were increased according to the applied heat flux. However, the flows were mixed well in the header and natural circulation of the whole cooling loop was not affected by uneven thermal loading significantly.
