According to the number of cold-rolled coils, the amount of roll wear and thermal expansion, and roll gap profile were calculated, by using the actual data from the finishing mill. Also, based on those data, the calculations of the deflection, the flattening, and the contact pressure of vwork rolls and backup rolls were made respectively. Specially, in the calculation of contact pressure, the numerical results were obtained not only during the normal rolling, but also during the abnormal rolling, by modeling mathematically the dynamic impact force which occurs when the head section of the strip is threading through rolls. With those results the growth of the fatigue region and the fatigue damage of rolls were predicted. Also the optimum roll-grinding depth was determined to maximize the roll life.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of microstructural change of materials using ultrasonic nonlinear parameters. For microstructure change, isothermal heat-treated ferritic 2.25Cr steel and low-cycle fatigue-damage copper alloy were prepared. The variation in ultrasonic nonlinearity was analyzed and evaluated through changes in hardness, ductile-brittle transition temperature, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction tests. Ultrasonic nonlinearity of 2.25Cr steel increased rapidly during the first 1,000 hours of deterioration and then gradually increased thereafter. The variation in non-linear parameters was shown to be coarsening of carbides and an increase in the volume fraction of stable M6C carbides during heat treatment. Due to the low-cycle fatigue deformation of oxygen-free copper, the dislocation that causes lattice deformation developed in the material, distorting the propagating ultrasonic waves, and causing an increase in the ultrasonic nonlinear parameters.
During operation of nuclear power plants, the fatigue assessment should be conducted repeatedly, considering changes of operating environments. For the case that cumulative usage factors (CUFs) may exceed the acceptance limit, flaw tolerance evaluation can be an alternative method to meet the regulatory requirements. In this respect, this paper analyzes the effects of the input variables for flaw tolerance evaluation based on ASME BPVC Section XI Appendix L. The reference analysis is performed for the example problem in NUREG/CR-6934. Then effects of the crack orientation, stress intensity factor solutions, thermal stress profiles, fatigue stress decomposition and fatigue crack growth curves are considered for the sensitivity analysis. The results show that the stress analysis considering the actual environment plays a crucial role in flaw tolerance evaluation.
An eccentrically-loaded single edge crack tension specimen (ESET) is similar to a compact tension(CT) specimen loaded in tension-tension. The standard ESET specimen exhibits advantages over other types of cracked specimen, such as n, single-edge crack, and middle-crack tension specimen. The details of ESET specimen configuration, test procedure, and calculations are described in ASTM E647 standard. However, a difficulty in attaching COD gage to the knife-edge on the front foe of the specimen can be found when the size of ESET specimen is small for rapid cooling and heating in thermal fatigue testing. The finite element analysis is performed for the ESET specimen with projected knife-edge on the front foe and a crack-length-compliance equation is suggested for the new specimen configuration. Calibration test are conducted with 347 stainless steel to compare the measured crack length with the calculated crack length from the suggested compliance expression. The test results showed good agreements with those of analysis.
The increase in high speed, multi-function and high I/O pin semiconductor devices highly demands high pin count, very thin, and high density packages. BGA is one of the solutions, but the package has demerits in package reliability, surface mounting problems due to the PCB warpage and solder joint crack related with TCE mismatch between the materials. On this study to verify the thermal fatigue lifetime of the solder joint FEM and experiments were performed after surface mounting BGA with different solder composition and reliability conditions. FEM showed optimum composition of Ag3.2-Sn96.5 and under the composition minimum creep deformation of the solder joint was calculated, and the thermal fatigue lifetime was improved. In view of temperature cycle condition, the conditions of $-65^{\circ}C$to $150^{\circ}C$ showed minimum lifetime and t was 1/3 of $0^{\circ}C$ to $125^{\circ}C$ condition. Test board was prepared and solder joint crack was verified. Until 1000cycle on soder joint crack was observed.
Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are those bridges without expansion joints. A single row of steel H-piles (SHPs) is commonly used at the thin and stub abutments of IABs to form a flexible support system at the bridge ends to accommodate thermal-induced displacement of the bridge. Consequently, as the IAB expands and contracts due to temperature variations, the SHPs supporting the abutments are subjected to cyclic lateral (longitudinal) displacements, which may eventually lead to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) failure of the piles. In this paper, the potential of using finite element (FE) modeling techniques to estimate the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs is investigated. For this purpose, first, experimental tests are conducted on several SHP specimens to determine their LCF life under thermal-induced cyclic flexural strains. In the experimental tests, the specimens are subjected to longitudinal displacements (or flexural strain cycles) with various amplitudes in the absence and presence of a typical axial load. Next, nonlinear FE models of the tested SHP specimens are developed using the computer program ANSYS to investigate the possibility of using such numerical models to predict the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs. The comparison of FE analysis results with the experimental test results revealed that the FE analysis results are in close agreement with the experimental test results. Thus, FE modeling techniques similar to that used in this research study may be used to predict the LCF life of SHP commonly used in IABs.
In SMA(shape memory alloy), the degradation by fatigue is one of the most important problems to be overcome, when SMA is used for robot-actuator material. The actuator is operated repeatitively for long time and its repeating operation develops the fatigue degradation of SMA. The fatigue degradation changes the transformation temperature and deformation behavior and results in inaccurate operation control of robot. Accordingly, the changing behavior of transformation temperature and deformation which results from repeating operation is to be investigated in advance and the scheme to resolve those problems have to be made for the design of actuator. In this study, the fatigue tests were carried out on SMA specimens prepared to have different condition of aging time and pre-strain with the direct-current heating-cooling method, which was a general method of operation in robot actuators. The behavior of transformation temperature and deformation were examined and analyzed in each specimen and the study was performed to establish the optimistic manufacturing condition of SMA against the fatigue degradation.
The fatigue characteristics of the carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (CFRC) material are necessary for the advanced industries requiring the thermal resistance. The research and development of CFRC have been in progress in the field of aerospace and defense industry. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue characteristics of CFRC by using an aircraft brake disk system. As the results of a series of tensile tests, the tensile strengths of CFRC were appeared 102.8 MPa ($0^{\circ}$), 98.6 MPa ($60^{\circ}$), and 95.5 MPa ($90^{\circ}$), respectively. It was showed that CFRC had better tensile property than the usual composite materials. As the results of fatigue tests, the fatigue limit was ~ 77 MPa, which is under the 75% of the maximum tensile load. CFRC is recommended as a strong potential composite materials because the carbon fibers are closely packed and strongly bonded between the carbon fibers.
The fatigue strength of the welds is affected by such factors as the weld geometry, microstructures, tensile properties and residual stresses caused by fabrication. It is very important to evaluate the structural integrity of the welds in nuclear power plant because the weldment undergoes the most of damage and failure mechanisms. In this study, the fatigue assessments for a reactor vessel outlet nozzle with the weldment to the piping system are performed considering the welding residual stresses as well as the effect of local brittle zone in the vicinity of the weld fusion line. The analytical approaches employed are the microstructure and mechanical properties prediction by semi-analytical method, the thermal and stress analysis including the welding residual stress analysis by finite element method, the fatigue life assessment by following the ASME Code rules. The calculated results of cumulative usage factors(CUF) are compared for cases of the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis, and with or without residual stress and local brittle zone effects, respectively. Finally, the fatigue life of reactor vessel outlet nozzle weld is slightly affected by the local brittle zone and welding residual stresses.
It is a normal circumstance to have high temperature and high humidity in Greenhouses even though these climates are changed by the area, season, climates, the size of the greenhouse, and the crops being raised. Workers in the greenhouses have complained about their uncomfortable work environment and discomfort from the hot conditions, including sunburn. The farmers' ailments are not significantly different between those working in the in greenhouses and those working in the fields. The Farmers' syndrome was almost two times higher for women than those of men for greenhouse workers. This study was developed for functional fatigue clothes for plastic greenhouses which are known for high temperatures and humidity. The ergonomic function and thermal comforts of fatigue clothes were evaluated in the climatic chamber($30.0^{\circ}C$, 70.0%R.H.). The current fatigue clothes which are made of cotton or nylon were purchased at the market. The developed clothes are made of highly absorbent and high speed drying polyester. And these fabrics have excellent elasticity. In this study, the functional fatigue clothes were designed with longsleeved sport shirts and Full length pants. Tre, Tsk, Hcl, HR and the personal subjective sensations such as heat, humidity, and comfortableness were significantly lower when subjects wore the developed clothes made with polyester than the previous attire.
