This study looks into changing building energy use by application of phase change material (PCM). PCM does not need extra energy for operation and is used for reducing building energy use and, CO2 output by displaying semi-permanent effects after installation. It also is able to avoid the maximum electric power time-zone by inducing a time lag phenomenon of cooling and heating loads with high thermal capacity using latent heat. To verify the efficiency of blinds and PCM, tests about the PCM operation mechanism using air conditioning machinery and nocturnal panel cooling were done. In the test results of the case using PCM installation, a $45^{\circ}$ blind angle with machinery air conditioning and nocturnal panel cooling at the same time shows a 22 percent energy saving effect against general space. The test results of each case were compared and analyzed based on the blind and window opening settings. Finally, the energy reduction of existing buildings using PCM application was reviewed based on the final measurement results.
The solar air heater has various performances according to an obstacle installed in the air duct. Many studies on thermal performance have been conducted. But many of these studies were using a kind of rib type obstacle attached at the bottom of absorbing plate, but they are so hard to be manufactured. In this study, characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in the solar air heater with various horizontal rectangular obstacles was investigated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. As a result, the heat transfer performance was improved from 1.2 to 3.32 times depending on installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. The pressure drop, however, also increased with increment of heat transfer performance from 2.8 to 180 times only by changing installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Thus, the performance factor presenting the thermal performance enhancement on the same pressure drop was also confirmed. As a result, the highest value of 0.828 as better performance factor was obtained at the lower height of rectangular obstacle and this value has started to decrease with increment of heat transfer performance. In the end, it could be confirmed that the pressure drop was carried higher than the quantity of improvement of the heat transfer performance when the heat transfer performance was increased by change of installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Both heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop to be required for system need to be considered before the rectangular obstacles are applied to the solar air heater.
The objective of this paper was the development of boards made from waste newspapers. The boards were produced from particle ONP(old newspaper) to reduce energy consumption in the board production process. ONP boards bonded with polyurethan adhesives(PU) were produced on a laboratory scale, and their physical and mechanical properties were examined. The average density of the ONP was $0.48g/cm^3$, and the densities of the boards were $0.50-0.90g/cm^3$. Therefore, th compaction ratios of the boards were in the range of 1.04-1.88. The results obtained were as follows: 1) An increase in board density results in a corresponding improvement in bending properties. 2) An increase in board density results in increased thermal conductivity. 3) In this research, ONP board can be used only for interior applications. To gain exrerior applications, the dimensional stability properties(thickness swelling and water absorption) need to be improved.
In the shearing process the burr or rollover must be minimized in order to improve the quality of product. The burr size can be minimized by control of several process parameters. But removal of all burrs are impossible. Most mechanical type deburring methods (vibrating bowls, rotating barrels, shot blasting, for example.) will remove large burrs, other methods use chemical (electro-chemical deburring) or heat (thermal energy deburring). The electro-chemical deburring process removes burrs by the deplating method. Electro-chemical deburring equipment is requires a small capital investment than other methods(mechanical or thermal methods). Electro-chemical deburring method need to many parameters for control such as a time, voltage and concentration of electrolyte. In this paper shows relations of these parameters by experiment.
Hypersonic vehicles over Mach 5 need active cooling or thermal management systems to resolve excessive heating problems on their fuselage and engines. Endothermic fuels are widely used these days not only for the energy source but also for a heat sink. Therefore, fuel supply systems of hypersonic vehicles should be mainly composed of adiabatic fuel storage tank, cooling systems for the airframe and engine/nozzle, and fuel supply/injection systems in high pressure, high temperature, and high fuel flow rate conditions. This paper describes a conceptual design process of a hypersonic fuel supply system in order for designing a layout of the system, and identifying components and their specification requirements.
Astrophysical shocks accelerate particles to high velocities, which we observe as cosmic rays. The acceleration process changes the nature of the shock because the particles interact with the local magnetic field, removing energy and potentially triggering instabilities. In order to simulate this process, we need a computational method that can handle large scale structures while, at the same time, following the motion of individual particles. We achieve this by combining the grid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) method with the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. MHD can be used to simulate the thermal gas that forms the majority of the gas near the shock, while the PIC method allows us to model the interactions between the magnetic field and those particles that deviate from thermal equilibrium. Using this code, we simulate shocks at various sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers in order to determine how the behaviour of the shock and the particles depends on local conditions.
This paper presents a numerical model of multi phase flow of the mixtures of molten material-liquid-vapor, particularly in thermal nonequilibrium. It is a two-dimensional, transient, three-fluid model in Eulerian coordinates. The equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method that implicitly couples the rates of phase changes, momentum, and energy exchange to determine the pressure, density, and velocity fields. To examine the model's ability to predict an experimental data, calculations have been performed for tests of pouring hot particles and molten material into a water pool. The predictions show good agreement with the experimental data. It appears, however, that the interfacial heat transfer and breakup of molten material need improved models that can be applied to such high temperature, high pressure, multi phase flow conditions.
This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation. From this temperature, we could get arc voltage distribution. (author). refs., figs., tabs.
There is an increasing interest in passive safety systems to minimize the need for operator intervention or external power sources in nuclear power plants. Because a passive system has a weak driving force, there is greater uncertainty in the performance compared with an active system. In previous studies, several methods have been suggested to evaluate passive system reliability, and many of them estimated the failure probability using thermal-hydraulic analyses and the Monte Carlo method. However, if the functional failure of a passive system is rare, it is difficult to estimate the failure probability using conventional methods owing to their high computational time. In this paper, a procedure for the application of the Chernoff bound to the evaluation of passive system reliability is proposed. A feasibility study of the procedure was conducted on a passive decay heat removal system of a micro modular reactor in its conceptual design phase, and it was demonstrated that the passive system reliability can be evaluated without performing a large number of thermal-hydraulic analyses or Monte Carlo simulations when the system has a small failure probability. Accordingly, the advantages and constraints of applying the Chernoff bound for passive system reliability evaluation are discussed in this paper.
For a stable electric power supply in the space, nuclear batteries have been used as the main power source in a spacecraft owing to their long lifetime and high reliability. In accordance with the plan for lunar mission in Korea, nuclear batteries will supply electricity to the rover that needs to be developed. According to the information about the estimated payload, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute started with the conceptual design based on the previous studies in USA and Russia. Because a nuclear battery converts the decay heat of the radioisotope into electricity, thermal design, radiation shield, and shock protection need to be considered. In this study, two types of nuclear batteries, radial type and axial type, were designed according to the alignment of the thermoelectric module. Heat transfer analyses were performed to compare their thermoelectric efficiency, and test mockups were fabricated to evaluate their performances.
