A computation routine, capable of performing thermal design analysis of the triple-pressure bottoming system (heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine) of combined cycle power plants, is developed. It is based on thermal analysis of the heat recovery steam generator and estimation of its size and steam turbine power. It can be applied to various parametric analyses including optimized design calculation. This paper presents analysis results for the effects on the design performance of heat exchanger arrangements at intermediate and high temperature parts as well as steam pressures. Also examined is the effect of steam sources for deaeration on design performance.
A web GIS based database system of thermophysical property of rocks in Korea is under construction. Rock samples were randomly collected over the whole country and sample spacings were generally 1 to 10 km. Thermal diffusivity, spedific heat, thermal conductivity, specific heat, density and porosity were measured on a collection of 1,560 rock samples in the laboratory. The sampled rocks were classified into igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock types and the variables were statistically studied. The thermal conductivity were compared with thermal diffusivity, porosity and dry density to define any correlations and the distribution of thermal conductivity is characterized by the geostatistical analysis. The optimal mapping of thermal conductivity is very useful as a practical design component for any geothermal systems.
A nylon wire holding and release mechanism (HRM) has been widely used for deployable applications of CubeSat owing to its simplicity and low cost. In general, structural safety of solar panel with an HRM has been designed by performing structural analysis under a launch environment. However, previous studies have not performed thermal analysis for HRM in an on-orbit environment. In this study, Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) thermal analysis was performed to evaluate thermal stability of the mechanism in the orbital thermal environment of the pogo pin-based HRM applied to CubeSat. In addition, the effectiveness of the thermal design and performance of the pogo pin-based HRM were verified through a thermal vacuum test.
HVOF thermal spray guns are now being widely used to produce protective coatings, on the surfaces of engineering components. HVOF technology employs a combustion process to heat the gas flow and melt the coating materials which are particles of metals, alloys or cermets. Particle flow which is accelerated to high velocities and combustion gas stream are deposited on a substrate. In order to obtain good quality coatings, the analysis of torch design must be performed. The reason is that the design parameters of torch influence gas dynamic behaviors. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to predict the gas dynamic behaviors in a HVOF thermal spray gun with various torch shapes. The CFD model is used to deduce the effect of changes in nozzle geometry on gas dynamics. Using a commercial code, FLUENT which uses Finite Volume Method and SIMPLE algorithm, governing equations have been solved for the pressure, velocity and temperature distributions in the HVOF thermal spray torch.

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is used to protect the substrate and extend the operating life of the gas turbine for a power plant and an aircraft. The major cause of failure of such a coating is the spallation of coating, and it results from the thermal stress between top coating and bond coating. To improve the durability of TBC system, the dense vertical cracked (DVC) coating method to insert vertical cracks is applied to a gas turbine blade. In this study, a criterion for the design of vertical crack in the DVC coating was presented using the finite element analysis.
A numerical and experimental study is made of thermal behavior of a hot chuck which is specially designed for flip-chip bonders. The hot chuck consists of radiant heat sources and a heated plate of very high conductivity, which is for achievement of high-speed heat-up. A simplified numerical model is developed to simulate unsteady thermal behavior of the heated plate. Parallel experimental work is also conducted for a prototype of the hot chuck. Based on the experimental data, the numerical model is tuned to improve the reliability and accuracy. Design analysis using the numerical model is conducted. The results of numerical computations illustrate that the radiant heater system adopted in this study satisfies the key design requirements for a high-performance hot chuck.
The thermal stress have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on thermal stress of motorcycle break disk. For this, temperature of motorcycle break disk is measured using a disk-on-pad type friction tester with full factorial design containing above 4 elements. and the thermal stress analysis of it was carried out using with ANSYS workbench. From this study, the result was shown that the regression equation which have a trust rate of 95% for thermal stress presumption of motorcycle break disk with frictional factor was composed. It is possible to apply for another automobile parts.

Thermal condition according to the operation attitude of a satellite in orbit would be essential to be known because the orbit attitude is a dominant factor to affect satellite thermal design. In this paper, the change in space thermal environment and the thermal effect in thermal design are studied for a low earth orbit satellite according to the yaw motion. The present satellite retains sun-pointing attitude during daylight due to the fixed type solar arrays. And it also moves along the orbit with constant yaw motion in a longitudinal axis so that a star tracker which is a star sensor for satellite's attitude control always looks into the deep space. This attitude is considered in its better visibility to the stars for a successful mission operation. Also, it is required to access the corresponding thermal effects due to the yaw motion. Therefore, we try to verify these by the thermal analysis for the satellite thermal model with the yaw motion.

This paper presents the results of miniaturized micro milling machine tool development for micro precision machining process. Finite element analysis has been performed to know the relationship between design dimensional variables and structural stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, thermal aspects. Design optimization has been performed to optimize the design variables of micro machine tool to minimize the volume, weight and deformation of machine tool structure and to maximize the stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, and thermal characteristics. This study presents the assessment of the technology incentive for the minimization of machine tool in the quantitative context of static, dynamic stiffness, thermal resistance and thus the accuracy implications. This study can also be provided a basic knowledge for further research of micro factory development.

This paper addresses the optimized thermal modeling methodology for spacecraft board level thermal analysis. A direct thermal modeling of external and internal structure of active parts which have high power dissipation is newly proposed, based on conventional plate modeling for Printed Circuit Board(PCB). The parts thermal modeling results were compared with other generic methodologies and verified by thermal vacuum test. This parts thermal modeling was directly applied to thermal analysis of CS(Communication Subsystem) board of HAUSAT-2 small satellite. As a result, it was confirmed that the parts thermal modeling can complement other conventional modeling methodologies. A parts thermal modeling is very effective for thermal control design, since the existing thermal problems can be solved at the parts level in advance.
