  • In this study, we performed structural and fatigue analyses of the engine exhaust manifold that was subjected to thermo-mechanical cyclic loading. The methodologies used in this study are based on an approach in which the techniques for modeling the exhaust system, the temperature-dependent properties of the material, and thermal cyclic loading are taken into consideration and a reliable strategy is adopted for failure prediction. An application example shows that at an elevated temperature, considerable compressive plastic deformation is observed and that at a low temperature, tensile stresses remain in those parts of the test exhaust manifold where failure is observed. In order to predict fatigue life, mechanical damage is determined on the basis of the stress.strain hysteresis loops by using the classical Coffin.Manson equation and by adopting a method in which the dissipated plastic energy is taken into consideration.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of performance tests for the Stilting cryocooler. Infrared sensor systems incorporating cryocoolers are required to be qualified to the appropriate environmental specification. Linear drive Stilting cryocooler have matured to the stage of undergoing formal qualification test program The thermal environmental test of the Stilting cryocooler is presented in this paper. We performed that low and high temperature keeping test from -4$0^{\circ}C$ to +6$0^{\circ}C$ and operating test at high and low temperature cyclic range with acceptance tests performed at scheduled intervals. Cooling capacity was determined as a function of cooler components temperatures at the compressor, hot end and cold tip. Tests performed on this cooler have been successful with a measured cooling performance of more than 0.8W@80K for 23$^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature with 40 $W_{ac}$ input power.

  • In this study, we investigated the efficient FE modelling techniques for thermal stress analysis of the exhaust manifold subject to thermo-mechanical cyclic loadings. At first, full engine model was considered to identify the critical locations and their results were compared to failure site shown by the engine bench test. And the equivalent system model was proposed based on the mechanical behavior of the full engine model. The weak areas of both FE models show a good agreement with the experimental crack location. As a result, a simplified modelling methodology was verified to estimate the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the exhaust manifold under thermal shock test condition.

  • A turbocharger is subjected to rapid temperature changes during thermal cyclic loads. In order to predict the thermo-mechanical failures, it's very important to estimate temperature distributions under the thermal shock test. This paper suggest the finite element techniques with the temperature histories, a constitutive material model and the mechanical constraints to calculate the thermal stresses and plastic strain distributions for the turbine housing. The first step was to develop a simple coupon approach to represent the failure mechanism of the classical design shapes and secondly applied the actual turbocharger to predict and validate the weak locations under the physical engine test.

  • In this study, the progressive inelastic deformation, so called, thermal ratchet phenomenon which can occur in high temperature liquid metal reactor was simulated with thermal ratchet structural test facility and 316L stainless steel test cylinder. The inelastic deformation of the reactor baffle cylinder can occur due to the moving temperature distribution along the axial direction as the hot free surface moves up and down under the cyclic heat-up and cool-down of reactor operations. The ratchet deformations were measured with the laser displacement sensor and LVDTs after cooling the structural specimen which experiences thermal load up to $550^{\circ}$ and the temperature differences of about $500^{\circ}C$. During structural thermal ratchet test, the temperature distribution of the test cylinder along the axial direction was measured from 28 channels of thermocouples and the temperatures were used for the ratchet analysis. The thermal ratchet deformation analysis was performed with the NONSTA code whose constitutive model is nonlinear combined kinematic and isotropic hardening model and the test results were compared with those of the analysis. Thermal ratchet test was carried out with respect to 9 cycles of thermal loading and the maximum residual displacements were measured to be 1.8mm. It was shown that thermal ratchet load can cause a progressive deformation to the reactor structure. The analysis results with the combined hardening model were in reasonable agreement with those of the tests.

  • This paper presents the experimental investigations on the seismic performance of a peculiar steel-concrete vertical hybrid structural system referred to as steel truss-RC tubular column hybrid structure. It is typically applied as the supporting structural system to house air-cooled condensers in thermal power plants (TPPs). Firstly, pseudo-dynamic tests (PDTs) are performed on a scaled substructure to investigate the seismic performance of this hybrid structure under different hazard levels. The deformation performance, deterioration behavior and energy dissipation characteristics are analyzed. Then, a cyclic loading test is conducted after the final loading case of PDTs to verify the ultimate seismic resistant capacity of this hybrid structure. Finally, the failure mechanism is discussed through mechanical analysis based on the test results. The research results indicate that the steel truss-RC tubular column hybrid structure is an anti-seismic structural system with single-fortification line. RC tubular columns are the main energy dissipated components. The truss-to-column connections are the structural weak parts. In general, it has good ductile performance to satisfy the seismic design requirements in high-intensity earthquake regions.

  • The effect of alloy compositions of the bond coating on the plasma sprayed-thermal barrier coatings was investigated. The performance of the coating composed of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ and Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$was evaluated by isothermal and thermal cyclic test in an ambient atmosphere at 115$0^{\circ}C$. The failure of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coatings was occurred at the bond coating/ceramic coating interface while Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coating was failed at the substrate/bond coating interface after thermal cyclic test. The lifetime of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coatings was longer than Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coating. The oxidation rate of the NiCrAl bond coating examined by TGA was lower than CoNiCrAlY bond coatings. In summary, these results suggest that Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$system as thermal barrier coating be not suitable considering the durability of the coating layer for high temperature oxidation and thermal stress.

  • Aluminium titanate (Al₂TiO5) with an excellent thermal shock resistant and a low the expansion coefficient was obtained by solid solution with MgO, SiO₂, and ZrO₂ in the Al₂TiO5 lattice or in the grain boundary solution through electrofusion in an arc furnace. However, these materials have low mechanical strength due to the presence of microcracks developed by a large difference in thermal expansion coefficients along crystallographic axes. Pure Al₂TiO5 tends to decompose into α-Al₂O₃ and TiO₂-rutile in the temperature range of 750-1300℃ that rendered it apparently useless for industrial applications. Several thermal shock tests were performed: Long therm thermal annealing test at 1100℃ for 100h; and water quenching from 950 to room temperature (RT). Cyclic thermal expansion coefficients up to 1500℃ before and after decomposition tests was also measured using a dilatometer, changes in the microstructure, thermal expansion coefficients, Young's modulus and strengths were determined. The role of microcracks in relation to thermal shock resistance and thermal expansion coefficient is discussed.

  • Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) materials are increasingly being used for strengthening and repair of steel structures. An issue that concerns engineers in steel members which are retrofitted with FRP is stress experienced due to temperature changes. The changing temperature affects the interface bond between the FRP and Steel. This research focused on the effects of cyclical thermal loadings on the interface properties of FRP bounded to steel members. Over fifty tests were conducted to investigate the thermal effects on bonding between FRP and steel, which were cycled from temperature of $-11^{\circ}C$ ($12^{\circ}F$) to $60^{\circ}C$ ($140^{\circ}F$) for 21-36 days. This investigation consisted of two test protocols, 1) the tensile test of epoxy resin, tack coat, FRP and FRP-steel plate, 2) tensile test of each FRP compound and FRP with steel after going through thermal cyclic loading. This investigation reveals an extensive reduction in the composite's strength.
