The phenolic acids in needles of five pine species such as Pinus densiflora, P. thunbergii. P. virginiana. P. rigida. and P. koraiensis were analyzed seasionally (March, June, September and December) in order to investigate the resistant factors against pine gall-midge(Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye). The interrelation of resistance to pine gall-midge and the content of phenolic acids in pine needles was investigated in the artificial hybride pine species. The contents of salicylic acid in susceptible species (P. densiflora and P. thunbergii) to pine gall-midge which watered with salicylic acid solution in a pot was determined. The results can be concluded as follows, 1. There was a little change in total phenolic constituents of resistant and susceptible pines seasonally. The each content of benzoic acid, salicylic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in June was the highest through four seasons. 2. In June, resistant species showed higher content of salicylic acid than susceptible species, while the content of gallic acid was the highest in December. 3. Among the 21 artificial hybrids(P. densiflora ${\times}$ P. virginiana. P. thunbergii ${\times}$ P. virginiana), the hybrides of the higher salicylic acid content showed the lower rate of pine gall formation. 4. Pine gall formation of the susceptible species which were watered with salicylic acid solution remarkably decreased.

Resistant and susceptible pine (Pinus thunbergii, Parl) trees to pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis, Uchida et Inouye) were selected and monoterpene composition in one year old branches, shoots and needles of both groups have been analysed by GLC. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Monoterpene composition in either one year old branches or shoots were not affected by their directions (North or South). 2. Major monoterpenes in one year old branches were ${\alpha}-pinene,\;{\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene. 3. In addition to ${\alpha}-pinene$, camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\Delta}^3-carene$, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene, several less volatile components which appear to be monoterpenes were also present in shoots and needles. 4. Compared with the susceptible pine, the resistant tree was found richer in limonene composition. 5. ${\beta}-Pinene$ composition in the resistant pine was less than that in the susceptible pine. 6. The difference in the composition of limonene or ${\beta}-pinene$ between two groups of pine trees was discussed in relation to the resistance to pine gall midge.
Susceptible trees of Pinus densiflora and resistant trees of Pinus rigida following pine gall midge (Tnecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye) attack were seasonally compared to examine the variation in needle growth and photosynthetic ability, respiration rate, chlorophyll contents, carotenoid and anthocyanin contents. Also, carotenoid and anthocyanin contents of larvae both from soil and from galled tissue were compared during March and September, respectively. The plantation damaged severely by this insect consisted mostly of 10-to 15-year old P. rigida and P. densiflora. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1) The length of the infested needles of P. densiflora decreased by 48.1 percent compared with the normal needles, while that of P. rigida did 37.4 percent. 2) All of P. densiflora and P. rigida showed higher photosynthetic ability in normal needles than in infested needles. The maximum photosynthetic ability of P. densiflora was shown in mid-August, while that of P. rigida in mid-October. In contrast to that, respiration rate of infested needles was higher than that of normal needles in both species. The respiration rate of P. rigida was higher than that of P. densiflora. 3) P. rigida had higher total chlorophyll contents than P. densiflora. The total carotenoid contents tents in infested needles were higher than those in normal needles of both species. 4) Total carotenoid contents were generally higher in P. rigida than in P. densiflora during the growing season. The total carotenoid content (0.094mg/g) in larvae from soil was similar to that (0.092mg/g) in larvae from galled tissues. 5) Infested needles of both species showed higher anthocyanin contents than normal needles. Higher anthocyanin contents in galled needles were due primarily to its active formation stimulated by larval attack. Thus, reddish-brown coloration occurred only in galled needles of P. densiflora.
As a series of studies on the behaviour of Pine gallmidge (Theccdiplosis japonensis Uehida ei Inoaye), the season of the larval hibernation in winter as well as the season of the attack of adults on pine needles in the vicinity of Seoul were observed, and following results were obtained. 1. The larvae get out of the galls and fall into the ground for the hibernation commencing from the end of September and finishing by the end of January of the next year. 2. About 76% of the whole larvae fell down during the month of November. 3. The frequency and the duration of raining mainly influenced the larval falling into the ground but temperature, humidity and the quantity of rainfall was not likely influence upon it. 4. As many as 47,000 larvae were counted per 1.5 square meter of the ground under the crown of the damaged trees. 5. When pine needles were isolated by fine linen-net-bag to keep the needles from the oviposition of the adults of the insect, at six different season; -i.e. 30th, May, 6th, 10th, 15th, 25th, and 30th June, the percentages of the damage were 80%, 50%, 36%, 19%, 20% and 1% respectively, while the damage of the control was 91%.
This experiment was carried out to develope a technique for labelling pine gall midge with ·radioactive phosphorus and calcium. This technique evolved would help to obtain basic information on the appropriate concentration of $^{32}P\; and\; ^{45}Ca$ in tagging and determination of adult flight ranges which considered as one of the factors in dissemination. 1. Labelling at the larval stage of pine gall midge by injection of $^{45}Ca$ into pine tree trunk appeared not to be effective for tagging the adults because radioactivity was gradually decreased to background by emergence. 2. The radioactivities of larvae in the galls gradually increased in September but from October 1 the activity was gradually decreased for 10 days then equilibrium was maintained thereafter. The results seem to indicate that larval diet termination occured early October. 3. A maximum level of radiation was detected at 3 weeks after $^{32}P$ injection and thereafter it was gradually reduced. This result implies that $^{32}P$ is not appropriate radioisotope in labelling pine gall midge through trunk injection method. 4. After washing in running water for 10 minutes, the optimum$^{32}P$ concentration for treated overwintered larvae and pupae was found to be 0.5 micro curie per ml. for 30 minutes dipping.
Developmental characteristics and reproductive ability of Caloglyphus sp. were examined under the constant temperature conditions. This mites has five stages ; egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult. All active instars preyed on larvae of pine gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye. The developmental period from the egg to the adult decreased with temperature increase at a range between $15^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The threshold of temperature and the thermal constant for the development from the egg to the adult were $8.2^{\circ}C$ and 122.0 day-degrees, respectively. At $25^{\circ}C$, survival rate from egg to deutonymph was estimated as 66.4%, and longevity of the adult was 12.3 days for male and 10.0 days for female. After a preoviposition period of 1 and 2 days female laid an average of 360.6 eggs each, almost all during the first half of their life time. The value of the net reproduction(Ro), the mean length of a generation(T) and the intrinsic rate of natural increase($r_m$) were calculated as 101.1, 9.3 days and 0.494 per female per day, respectively.
This experiments were performed to investigate the temperature effects, which caused by the various types of collecting trap treatments, during the overwintering period of pine gall midge larvae, on the peak adult emergence time. And the following results were obtained. 1) The maximum temperatures inside of the collection traps were significantly different each other, and the vinyl cage showed the highest degree which highering $15^{\circ}C$, and standard cage, cage-50 and funnel trap highering $3-12^{\circ}C$ in monthly average comparing to control. 2) There was no significant difference among the treatment in minimum temperatures, during the overwintering periods of larvae. 9) The peak adult emergence time were May 15 in vinyl cage plot which shortened 20 days and both standard cage and cage-50 shortened 14 day than that of control. 4) The funnel type trap treatment delayed 6 days of the peak adult emergence comparing to control, in spite of the treatment showing higher maximum and cumulative temperatures than the control plot. 5) The decadal maximum temperatures of middle part of December and March were significantly correlated with the shortening of the peak adult emergence date.
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of ground and foliar sprinkling of natural water for control of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis, by disturbing the reproductive behavior of adults such as copulation and oviposition. Diurnal ground spray for whole area application and foliar spray for single tree treatment were tested at day time during the period of adult emergence. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The population density of overwintering larvae in soil was not affected by the water spray during the adult emergence period. 2. Spraying the water showed no effect on the whole period and number of adult emergence, but retarded early emergence and facilitated Late emergence. The difference in the emerging time by 50% emergence day was approximately 7 days. 3. Ground spray was significantly different from control in gall formation rates but was not sufficient for effective control. As a single-tree treatment, the foliar spray was found to be highly effective for control of the pine needle gall midge, Average gall formation of spray plots and untreated ones were 2.6% and 38%, respectively ; control value exceeded 90%. 4. Ground spray of water was not effective in reducing larvae in gall of needle. Foliar spray, however, reduced 45% of larval numbers. 5. Foliar spray accelerated shoot growth by 15%-18%. 6. Foliar spray was highly effective for the control of sucking insects, such as mites and aphids on pine trees.
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the application of low concentration insecticides by sprinkler system for control of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplasis japonensis, by killing the adults emerging and copulating near the ground. For ground spray, 2 insecticides of fenitrothion and deltamethrin, dilutions of $2,000{\times}$ and $3,000{\times}$ deltamethrin, and 3 spray intervals of 1-3 day were tested at the peak time of adult emergence during the day time. The results are as follows ; 1. Ground spray of fenitrothion 50% EC and deltamethrin 1% EC were found to be highly effective for control of the pine needle gall midge. Average gall formation by fenitrothion, deltamethrin and untreated ones were 3.40%, 5.23% and 45.69%, respectively ; control value of both insecticides exceeded 88%. 2. As a ground spray of deltamethrin 1% EC, dilution $2,000{\times}$ was significantly different from $3,000{\times}$ in gall formation rates. Average gall formation of $2,000{\times}$ plots and $3,000{\times}$ treated ones were 5.23% and 18.00% ; control values were 89.44% and 63.66%, respectively. 3. Diurnal treatment of ground spray was found to be highly effective for control of pine needle gall midge. 4. In particular, control by ground application of dilutions $2,000{\times}$ and $3,000{\times}$ of deltamethrin is suggested because it does not have an adverse effect on arthropods of the ground surface such as ants and spiders.

This study was conducted to select superior provenances of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) well adapted to Korean environment for timber production. In 1976, twenty-two provenances of Scots pine were introduced from Sweden and the seeds were sown in seed beds in March. After one year, the seedlings were transplanted to nursery beds. The resulting 1-1 seedlings of 22 provenances were planted at Whaseong in 1978. Randomized complete block design with 3 replications were used for test plantation. Each provenance was planted with 20-tree row plot in each block and at a spacing of $1.8{\times}1.8m$. The growth performance of each provenance was monitored up to 33-years after planting. There were significant differences among provenances in volume growth. F3001 provenance showed the best volume growth of 33-years after planting ($0.160m^3$), which was 2.2 times greater than that of the lowest provenance W2027 ($0.072m^3$). The ranking of provenances was stabilized after 14 years. Comparing to reference tree species, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), all Scots pine provenances showed poor growth performance. In other words, volume growth of Japanese red pine at age 28 and 33 were 2.1 and 3.3 times greater than that of Scots pine, respectively. Moreover, survival rate of Scots pine was lower than that of Japanese red pine. Based on these results, it was suggested that Scots pine was not suitable to Korean environments. The cause of maladaptation of Scots pine and the implications of introduction breeding were discussed.
