A Review on Path Selection and Navigation Approaches Towards an Assisted Mobility of Visually Impaired People

  • Some things come easily to humans, one of them is the ability to navigate around. This capability of navigation suffers significantly in case of partial or complete blindness, restricting life activity. Advances in the technological landscape have given way to new solutions aiding navigation for the visually impaired. In this paper, we analyze the existing works and identify the challenges of path selection, context awareness, obstacle detection/identification and integration of visual and nonvisual information associated with real-time assisted mobility. In the process, we explore machine learning approaches for robotic path planning, multi constrained optimal path computation and sensor based wearable assistive devices for the visually impaired. It is observed that the solution to problem is complex and computationally intensive and significant effort is required towards the development of richer and comfortable paths for safe and smooth navigation of visually impaired people. We cannot overlook to explore more effective strategies of acquiring surrounding information towards autonomous mobility.

  • In this paper, an omni wheel-based electric wheelchair is proposed that can achieve safe and convenient movement and can improve the convenience of living for mobility-impaired people who cannot move on their own. Generally, mobility-impaired people are afflicted with physical health issues such as pain and secondary body deformities because they often remain seated in wheelchairs for long periods of time. Hence, an electric wheelchair is required whose posture can be changed and whose size can be adjusted according to the user's body type. Such a wheelchair should also facilitate easy change of direction (even in a narrow space) for convenient movement. In this paper, an electric wheelchair featuring omni wheels is proposed that allows posture transformation and facilitates movement in a narrow space. It is believed that the proposed wheelchair can aid in enhancing the convenience of living for mobility-impaired people.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop recommendation of sign system and color codes in making the public interior environment more accessible for the visually impaired persons. The appropriate guidelines in designing the sign system and the color codes in the public interior environment can increase the accessibility, the mobility and the safety for the visually impaired persons including the increasing elderly. By selecting the effective sign system much more desirable results can be brought: Improvement of accessibility, mobility, increase of safety, work efficiency and the psychological stability. Sign system and the color is more important for the weak-sighted people than the normal-sighted in way finding and the orientation strategies. 53 visually impaired persons participated for this study, the answers of the questionaires by the weak-sighted persons are focused on in this research. The data, the needs of users is analysed on the basis of users-oriented. The result of this study can be considered as a basic direction of sign system design and color codes in our codes in our public environment for all people especially visually impaired persons.

교통약자를 위한 전동 이동 보조기기 안전 경로 서비스의 개발과 평가 (Development and Evaluation of Safe Route Service of Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices for the Mobility Impaired People)

  • 본 연구는 최근 이동권 개선을 위해 교통약자들을 중심으로 이용되고 있는 전동 이동 보조기기의 안전 경로를 제공하는 서비스를 개발하고 평가하였다. 부산광역시에 거주하는 교통약자들과 관련 기관 종사자(부산광역시 내 장애인 자립 생활센터, 장애인 협회 정회원, 전동 이동 보조기기 수리기사, 활동 보조사)들과의 설문을 통해 전동 이동 보조기기의 이동에 영향을 미치는 13종의 요인을 도출하였다. 각각의 요인들에 안전성 점수를 부여하고 현장에서 수집된 데이터로 객체 인식 AI 모델을 학습시켜 해당 요인들을 판별한 후, 최적경로 탐색 알고리즘을 통해 전동 이동 보조기기 경로 안내 서비스를 개발하였다. 동일한 출도착 경로를 대상으로 T-map에서 제공하는 일반 경로와 본 연구의 추천 경로를 비교한 결과, 일반 경로에서는 전동 이동 보조기기의 주행에 방해가 되거나 승차감을 불편하게 하는 장애물이 많았고 가파른 경사로 인해 이동이 불편했지만, 본 연구의 추천 경로에서는 상대적으로 장애물이 적었고 경사도 완만하여 전동 이동 보조기기의 주행에 무리가 없었다. 향후 연구에서는 전동 이동 보조기기 이용자의 실시간 위치를 기반으로 경로 안내 서비스를 구현하고 다수의 이용자를 대상으로 현장 실증테스트를 진행하여 사회적 수용성 평가 및 검증을 수행할 필요가 있다.

기동장애 재활환자의 낙상위험성 영향요인분석 -활동특이적 균형자신감을 중심으로- (Analysis of Factors Influencing Risk of Fallings among Rehabilitation Patients with Impaired of Mobility: Focusing on Activities-specific Balance Confidence)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate activities-specific balance confidence and risk of fallings among rehabilitation patients with impaired of mobility, and to identify the influence of activities-specific balance confidence on their risk of fallings. Method: Data for 132 rehabilitation patients were collected between October June 20 and August 20, 2012 at nine hospitals in a metropolitan city. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 20.0. Result: The mean score for rehabilitation patients' activities-specific balance confidence was 40.18 out of a possible range of 0-100 and the mean score for risk of fallings among rehabilitation patients was 31.10 within a possible range of 0-125. Significant factors affecting the risk of fallings among the rehabilitation patients were 'activity level', 'dementia', 'body mass index', 'anxiety', and 'presence of a caregiver', which together explained 34.7% of the variance. The most significantly factor influencing rehabilitation patients' risk of fallings was activities-specific balance confidence which explained 23.5% of the variance. Conclusion: The study results indicate that activities-specific balance confidence as well as physical factors should be considered for interventions to decrease risk of fallings in rehabilitation patients with impaired mobility.

공공건물 및 공중이용 시설에서 시각장애인을 위한 편의시설 설치실태 평가 (An Evaluation of Interior Design Elements Supporting the Visually Impaired Persons in the Public Facilities)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the interior elements supporting the safety, mobility and accessibility for the visually impaired persons in the public, government, and other facilities. Ten facilities were analyzed with a checklist based on the architectural codes and the users needs. Also theses facilities were reviewed with mandatory items of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It appeared that the arrangement of elements such as stair, elevator and restroom, the plan of circulation path and the signage of way-finding had more problems than the details of each element. In addition, institutional facilities for the blinds and trainstation provided easy accessibility, adaptability and mobility compared to the hospital and bus terminal. Suggestions were provided to solve the problem which were found.

도시철도 역사 승강장의 유니버설 디자인 기준에 관한 연구 (A Study on Universal Design Guideline of the Urban Railway Station: Platform)

  • Purpose: A large number of the mobility impaired have increasingly used the railway station, so the application of UD(Universal Design) on urban railway station has been interested. However, the current criteria used in domestic areas have concerned about the effective administration of railway station facilities rather than the needs of he mobility impaired. Of diverse facilities in railway station, the platform is considered as an important space due to many transportation users' riding or transfer in railway stations. Therefore, this study aims to explore the detailed criteria in adapting ideas from UD to platform within railway station. Methods: This study explores the criteria by evaluating findings from previous studies. First, all criteria related to platform in domestic and foreign areas are taken together and analyzed, and appropriate criteria first are established. Based on these, the current situation of platform facilities in railway station is evaluated. Then, the detailed criteria applicable to railway station platform are concluded, by reviewing types of the mobility impaired and principles of UD. Result: Findings from this study are as follows. First, the current criteria applied to railway station platforms lack ideas of UD, while the criteria used in foreign countries adequately reflect the ideas of UD on railway station platforms; therefore, the better criteria applicable to platform facilities in domestic railway station are necessary. Second, standard criteria used in domestic areas with newly additional criteria suggest that platform facilities should be established according to those criteria. Taken together, the better platform facilities should be provided to railway users through the application of UD to railway station platforms. Implications: For the future users in railway station platforms, the additional research on criteria of UD as well as diverse types of spaces within railway stations should have been continued.

간호학생이 내린 간호진단 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Classification of Nursing Diagnoses by Student Nurses)

  • This research was done to promote improvement of practical application of nursing diagnoses and to improve the quality of nursing. The subjects of this research were 156 second year students of C junior nursing college who were giving adult patient care. The nursing diagnoses of 312 reports were analyzed using NANDA. In these case reports only nursing diagnoses were considered, of which there were a total of 982. In the data analysis the 9H of the nursing students' nursing diagnoses matched with 105 NANDA nursing diagnoses, Of these, the most frequent diagnoses were pain(165, 17.48%), anxiety(101, 10.70%), alteration in nutrition(83, 8.79%) , sleep disturbance (67, 7.10%), in activity intolerance (67, 7.10%), ineffective breathing pattern(51,5.40%). The etiology for the students' nursing diagnoses were compared with NANDA's nursing diagnoses by frequency. The most frequent etiology for the nursing diagnoses of pain was a biological etiology(50, 31%), for anxiety, situation crisis(58, 57.43%), for alteration in nutrition, indigesion(23, 27.71%), for sleep disturbance, external etiology(25, 37.32%), for activity intolerance, immobile position(22, 32.84%), for ineffective breathing pattern, pain(35, 68.63%), and for ,impaired physical mobility, pain(31, 65.96%). The most frequent etiology for constipation was inadquate digestion of water and cellulose (16, 34.78%), for fluid volume felicity, loss of body fluid (21, 52.50%), for impaired skin integrity, external etilogy(16, 43.24%), for impaired physical mobility, pain(22, 62.86%) , for knowledge deficits, cognition disturbance(9, 27.27%), for ineffective air way clearance, secretion obstruction(14, 48.27%) , for impaired gas exchange, loss of transport ability of blood oxygen(9, 37.50%) , and for powerlessness, therapy environment (5, 22.73%). The number of nursing diagnoses by pattern was exchange(16), moving(6), feeling(4), choosing(4), relating(3), communication(1), perceiving(1), knowing(1), valuing(1).

시각장애인을 위한 버스 승·하차 시스템 (Boarding and Alighting System of Public Bus for Visually Impaired People)

  • 본 논문은 시각장애인의 대중교통, 특히 버스 이용을 보조하기 위한 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 시각장애인의 대다수는 버스 이용에 어려움을 겪는데, 기존의 안내시스템과 점자 블록은 큰 도움을 주지 못하는 것으로 드러났다(2017, 장애인실태조사). 본 논문에서는 시각장애인의 버스 접근성과 이동성 향상을 위해, 다음과 같은 세 가지 기능을 갖춘 시스템을 개발한다: (1)스마트 폰 애플리케이션을 이용한 승차 예약 기능, (2)버스 도착 알림 기능, (3)Beacon을 이용한 무선 하차 벨 기능. 데모환경을 구축한 후 진행한 다양한 실험을 통하여 버스 예약, 탑승, 하차가 원활히 이루어질 수 있음을 확인하였다.

시각적 교통약자를 위한 길안내 데이터 모델 구축에 관한 연구 (A Study on Configuration of the Road Guide Data Model for Visually Impaired Pedestrian)

  • 측량, 지도, 통신 기술의 발달로 다양한 길안내 앱 및 차량용 내비게이션 등이 개발 및 보급되었다. 그 결과, 보행 및 운전 전반에 널리 활용되며 많은 도움을 주고 있으나 여전히 사회적 약자의 일상 편의를 향상시키는데 있어서는 한계가 존재한다. 이는 일반 길안내 앱이나 내비게이션이 일반인의 보행이나 차량을 중심으로 서비스되고 있어 시각장애인이 이동 시 혼란을 유발하거나 위험 요소가 되는 정보를 제공하지 못하는데 따른 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 시각장애인과 같이 보행(이동)에 제약을 받는 교통약자를 대상으로 한 공간정보 기반 서비스를 구현하기 위한 데이터 구축 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 공간정보 데이터를 기반으로 시각장애인의 보행과 관련되어 요구되는 항목과 구성요소를 선정하고, 이를 기반으로 상용 앱(app)에 접목할 수 있는 보행용 길안내 네트워크를 구성·분석하였다. 그 결과, 공간정보 기반의 점자블럭(점형/선형), 음향신호기, 버스정류장, 볼라드 등의 추가적인 시각장애인용 컨텐츠 정보가 확보될 경우 교통약자의 독립적인 보행을 위한 길안내 서비스가 가능하다는 결론을 도출했다. 또한, 길안내를 위한 데이터 모델을 정립하고 이를 기반으로 초기 버전의 모바일 앱을 구현했으며, 시각장애인을 대상으로 한 검증을 통해 시각장애인용 컨텐츠 정보 제공이 보행 시 유용함을 확인했다. 보다 안정적인 보행을 지원하기 위해서는 타 기관 또는 여러 부처에서 제공되는 공간정보 자료의 DB (DataBase)화 및 활용이 필요하며, 동시에 ICT (Information and Communications Technologies)기술 접목을 통해 다양한 센서 및 음성기술 등을 연계·활용한 고도화 방안도 모색되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.
