  • A compact radio frequency (RF) bandpass filter (BPF) in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) is suggested for WiMAX applications. The center frequency ($f_0$) of the BPF is 5.5 GHz and its pass band or 3-dB bandwidth is 700 MHz to cover all the three major bands, low and middle unlicensed national information infrastructure (U-NII; 5.15-5.35 GHz), World Radiocommunication Conference (5.47-5.725 GHz), and upper U-NII/industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) (5.725-5.85 GHz), for the WiMAX frequency band. A lumped circuit element design-the 5th order capacitively coupled Chebyshev BPF topology-is adopted. In order to design a compact RF BPF, a very thin ($43.18{\mu}m$) ceramic layer is used in LTCC substrate. An interdigital BPF is also designed in silicon substrate to compare the size and performance of the lumped circuit element BPF. Due to the high relative dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$ = 11.9) of the silicon substrate, the quarter-wavelength resonator of the interdigital BPF can be reduced. In comparison to the 5th order interdigital BPF at $f_0$ = 5.5 GHz, the lumped element design is 24% smaller in volume and has 17 and 7 dB better attenuation characteristics at $f_0{\pm}0.75$ GHz.

  • In this paper, we proposed an internal multiband loop embedded monopole antenna for mobile handset that could be used for smart phones. The proposed antenna has a volume of 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 15 mm(L) ${\times}$ 5 mm(H), ground plane size is 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 80 mm(L), and covers the GSM900 (Global System for Mobile communications : 880-960 MHz), K-PCS (Korea-Personal Communications Service : 1750-1870 MHz), US-PCS (US Personal Communications Service : 1850-1990 MHz), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access : 1920-2170 MHz), Wibro (2300-2390 MHz), Bluetooth (2400-2483 MHz) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network : 2400-2483.5 MHz) bands for VSWR (voltage standing wave ration) less than 3. The proposed loop adding design at middle section of longest branch showed wide impedance bandwidth for the lowest resonance frequency band. The proposed antenna have a lowest resonance frequency band from 738 MHz to 1075 MHz for S11 value of -6dB. A HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) of the Ansys Corporation based on a finite element method is employed to analyze the proposed antenna in the design process and to compare the simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper presents results of continuous wave and swept frequency response measurements over the frequency range of UNII lower and middle bands from 5.15GHz to 5.35GHz in indoor environments. From the continuous wave measurements at 5.2GHz, the excess path loss, and the statistical characteristics of the temporal and spatial fading were found. By sweeping the frequency over the band, envelope correlation as a function of frequency was found and the coherence bandwidth (CBW) was determined from the envelope correlation. Using a channel model, the CBW was used to evaluate RMS delay spread. The dependence of CBW on the antenna polarization was simulated and compared with the measurement results. The influence of room size and separation of transmitter and receiver for LOS paths on RMS delay spread was discussed.

  • In this paper, the bandwidth and gain enhancement of a double-dipole quasi-Yagi antenna (DDQYA) using a modified balun and two directors is studied. The proposed DDQYA consists of two strip dipoles with different lengths, a ground reflector, which are connected through a coplanar strip line, and two directors. The modified balun is used to increase the bandwidth, whereas two directors are appended to the DDQYA to enhance the gain in the middle and high frequency band. The effects of the length and width of the first director on the antenna performance are analyzed, and final design parameters to obtain a gain over 7 dBi at 1.60-2.90 GHz band are obtained. A prototype of the proposed DDQYA is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and the experimental results show that the antenna has a frequency band of 1.57-3.00 GHz for a VSWR < 2, and measured gain ranges 7.1-7.8 dBi at 1.60-2.90 GHz band.

  • The prediction of a system coverage is required to install or operate a base station of the differential global positioning system(DGPS). However, the predicted results differ from the measured results when those are analyzed using ITU-R effective ground conductivity values. Thus, in this paper, the coverages of DGPS reference stations are analyzed using the modified effective ground conductivity values. The modified effective ground conductivity is based on the effective ground conductivity of ITU-R and modified to minimize the error between the measured electric fields and the predicted electric fields by using a statistical method. Then, the DGPS system coverages are analyzed by using the modified effective ground conductivity values, and the system stability is verified with a various analysis.

  • In this paper, a wideband loop antenna is designed using a CPW feeding method for indoor digital TV applications. The proposed loop antenna consists of a square loop and two circular sectors which connect the loop with central feed points, and the CPW feed line is inserted in the lower circular sector. The CPW feed line is designed to match with the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV applications, and the ground slots are etched in order to improve the impedance matching in the middle frequency region. The optimized antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate, and the experiment results show that it operates in the frequency band of 463-1,280 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the DTV band.

  • A new concept of piezoelectric smart panels for noise reduction in wide band frequencies is proposed and their possibility is experimentally investigated. The proposed panels are based on active and passive methods. They use piezoelectric smart structure technology for active noise reduction at low band frequencies and passive sound absorbing materials for mid-range of noise frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment was performed. The smart panels exhibit a good noise reduction in middle and high frequency ranges due to the mass effects of absorbing materials or/and the air gap. The use of piezoelectric smart panel renders noise reduction large at resonance frequency. Another concept of smart panel that uses piezoelectric damping is experimentally investigated. Since piezoelectric dampings can reduce vibration and noise at resonance frequencies with simple shunt circuit, they have merits in terms of economy and simplicity. Dissipated energy method(DEM) is adopted to tune the shunt circuit precisely in piezoelectric dampings. Noise reduction at multiple resonance frequencies is demonstrated.

  • Most watermarking techniques embed watermarks in the middle frequency range for robustness and invisibility. In our proposed watermarking algorithms embed the gaussian sequence watermark into low frequency area of the wavelet transform domain because the histogram of low sub-band area is composed by similar coefficients. Also, our proposed scheme doesn't need the original image in extraction procedure The experimental results show good robustness against the Check Mark benchmarking tools.

  • Human hearing sensitivity is frequency-dependent. The sensitivity is low at both ends of the audible frequency, and the sensitivity is the highest in the middle band at 3000 Hz. The heart sound of a healthy person is concentrated at a low frequency of 200 Hz or less, and despite using a stethoscope, the hearing sensitivity of the human body is low, and the stethoscope sound is low. Amplifying the sound of the stethoscope is not effective in distinguishing heart sounds in noisy environments because it maintains the same signal-to-noise ratio. In this study, a method of enhancing auditory stimulation was developed by applying a method of moving the spectrum of auscultation sounds into a high-frequency region where the human body is highly sensitive to hearing. The spectrum of the auscultation sound was moved up by 500 Hz in the frequency domain, and an inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT) was performed to reconstruct the auscultation sound. The heart sounds reconstructed by moving the spectra were divided into the first heart and second heart sound components, as in the original heart sound, and it was confirmed that the intensity was large in the cochleagram representing auditory stimulation. Therefore, this study suggested that spectral shift is a method to enhance auditory stimulation during auscultation without increasing the intensity of the auscultation sound.
