  • Membrane processes are now frequently considered for application in drinking water treatment. The biggest impediment for applying membrane processes is fouling that comes from mass flux (such as particle and organic matter) to the membrane surface and its pores due to convection flow through the membrane. Natural organic matter (NOM) has been reported as the most detrimental foulant. Some research also indicated that particles were often the dominant cause of fouling. Therefore, both NOM and particle fouling need to be examined to better understand fouling in ultrafiltration. Two waters from natural sources, Lake Austin water and Missouri River water, were selected. Both waters are relatively hard waters but has significantly different particle concentrations, which will elucidate effects of particles on membrane fouling. Precipitative softening is traditionally designed to remove hardness ions in hard waters but it can also remove particles and organic matter. Therefore, the integrated water treatment with softening and ultrafiltration is proposed as a promising option for hard waters. The three levels of softening were used to represent different degrees of pretreatment to ultrafiltration in terms of organic matter (i.e., NOM fouling) and precipitates (i.e., particle fouling by further precipitation). Results showed that natural particles in Missouri River water was detrimental foulants of ultrafiltration. As the levels of softening were increased, NOM and particle removal was increased, and thus fouling was decreased. Direct images of the surface of the membranes by scanning electron microscopy allowed observation of the different properties of particles caught in fibril networks of natural organic matter.

  • An epialtid spider crab, Naxioides robillardi (Miers, 1882), is known as widely distributed in Indo-West Pacific region include Japanese waters. Four specimens of epialtid crabs were collected from adjacent waters of Jejudo Island and identified as N. robillardi. This species can be grouped into two forms such as N. robillardi form typical and N. robillardi form mammillata according to morphological features of carapace, gastric spine, and chela. Morphological characters of all Korean specimens well agree with the form mammillata in general. In this paper, morphological diagnosis and illustrations of newly collected N. robillardi are provided. DNA barcode sequence of COI region is also determined for the first time.

  • This study examines the efficiency of safety management measures taken in coastal waters to prevent coastal accidents. Recent years have witnessed about 800 cases of large and small coastal accidents in coastal waters annually. On average, these accidents have been responsible for 129 deaths annually, Thus, there is a need for effective preventive measures. Accordingly, the Korea Coast Guard enacted the Coastal Accident Prevention Act in 2014 and has cooperated with related organizations, such as local governments and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, to safely manage coastal waters. However, compared to the rapid increase in human coastal activities, coastal accidents continue to occur due to the lack of a safety mindset among the Korea Coast Guard, a lack of public safety awareness, a lack of safety management facilities, and poor interest from related organizations, among others. This study examines the conditions and problems faced with regard to safety management in coastal waters based on recent coastal accident data, and analyzes foreign coastal waters safety management cases. Various methods to improve the safety management efficiency in coastal waters are proposed, such as enhancing the safety mindset and capabilities of the Korea Coast Guard, strengthening cooperation among related organizations, increasing the role of local governments, expanding and strengthening safety management facilities by applying new technologies, inculcating a culture of maritime safety, and activating private-public collaborative governance.

  • The rising spate of piracy in Nigeria's territorial waters has become a burden on the economic development of the country. It has adversely affected the exportation of crude oil, which is the mainstay of the country's economy. Pirates target and hijack vessels carrying oil and gas, thus reducing the revenue accruable to the country from selling these resources. Piracy also affects the fishing industry which is another source of revenue to the country. Nigeria, as an import dependent country, relies on the importation of finished goods, and this is seriously affected by piracy. This study briefly examines the root causes of piracy in Nigeria. Further, the study interrogates the effects of piracy, identifies the challenges in the suppression of the crime and proffers suggestions toward suppressing the crime in the country. Against this backdrop, the study argues, among other things, that an expansive definition of piracy is key in the fight against this maritime crime in Nigeria, because the present legal regime is restrictive and limited in scope, thus, it does not reflect the modern piratical acts. More importantly, Nigeria must criminalise piracy in its domestic law in other to police its territorial waters, capture and prosecute pirates in its local courts.

  • As of late, people who enjoy fishing as a pastime in Korea has dramatically increased on the back of the increased national income and 5-day working system being in place. In the past, people used to fish in inland waters, but fishing on the sea has also shown a steady increase. The expanded fishing community along with increasing types of fishing, however, led to destruction of ecosystem by littering the waters of both inland and sea with wastes and reckless exploitation of fish resources. Fishing activities are usually taking place in inland waters, or on the sea, which is, by definition, a common property, and side effects such as free riding and diseconomy are frequently observed occurring. In other words, everyone can use the property free of charge(except paying fishing lot), and littering the waters with pollutants and wastes stemming from fishing activities is currently rampant. In this context, this paper studies the necessity of introducing fishing license system and its feasibility in Korea from a perspective to improve the national welfare through policy measures based on 'polluter pays principle' to prevent further environmental pollution in the fishing lot and preserve fishery resources. Study shows that introduction of Recreational fishing license system is urgently needed, but it is concluded that it should take more time to implement the system so as to accomodate the differing interests of all parties involved including recreational fishing industry, while strengthening public relation activities to solicit for the people's understanding of the system to be introduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the fishery perception and recreation fishing demand level of coastal waters ranch with the case in Tongyeong city's Bijin-do Yongcho-do, Juk-do. The study conducts a survey of 27 fishermen and 113 recreation fishing tourists from September 26 to November 21, 2016. The major results of this study are as follows. First, the survey of fishery perception level suggests that the increase of fishery resources by Tongyeong-si coastal waters ranch project contributes to the rising income of fishermen, decreased fishing cost, and increased the number of tourists. Second, the survey of recreation fishing tourists's demand level suggests that a beautiful view, fish populations, kindness of residents, fishing point information, charter information, and the convenience of transportation are highly praised and highly regarded. However, links to nearby tourism, lodging facilities, and food information that can increase the income of fishermen is poorly praised. Therefore, this study suggests that a careful marine policy with fishery resource creation should be followed for marine fishing village tourism consumer's benefits in order to increase fishing village's income.

  • This study was investigated the species composition of demersal fishes by a bottom trawler GAYA, in order to be used basic data for resources management of fishery in the jointly controlled waters of the West sea. We caught 39 species, 5,532 individuals and 322.518kg in biomass. The number of species was the fewest of the jointly controlled waters of the East china sea and boundary zone between Busan and Tsushima. The first dominant species in individuals in summer was Oregonia gracilis, and in biomass was angler. But angler was the first dominant species in 7 stations of 12 stations. It was a peculiar phenomenon that cod which lives in a cold current was caught in the northern part of the West sea. In this connection it seems to be needs for oceanographic research. Catch per unit effort (kg/hr) of bottom trawl was the higher in northern part and in right line of all surveyed area respectively.

  • A ctenostomatous bryozoan, Bantariella bocki is reported from Jejudo Island of South Korea. This is the first report from Korean waters. Each zooid is produced from each kenozooid which arranged in two and originated opposite each other at intervals of about 0.64 mm along the stolon. B. bocki collected from black corals is considered to be a invasive species introduced from Bonin Islands located in the subtropical waters. The redescription, some distributional remarks and illustrations of B. bocki are provided.
