New Occurrences of Two Penaeid Species (Crustacea: Decapoda: Dendrobranchiata) in Korean Waters

  • New occurrences in Korean waters were recorded for two penaeid species: Atypopenaeus stenodactylus (Stimpson, 1860) and Metapenaeopsis toloensis Hall, 1962, which were previously known from the Indo-West Pacific up to southern Japan. The specimens were collected from the southeastern coast of Korea by a shrimp beam trawl. The former is the only known member of the genus Atypopenaeus and the latter is the sixth species of the genus Metapenaeopsis reported in Korea. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with color photographs of the specimens are given. At present, the Korean Penaeidae consist of 20 species in 11 genera. A key to the Korean genera of family Penaeidae is also presented.

2017년 통영 해역에서의 Alexandrium affine 우점 해수의 흡광 특성 (Analysis on the Optical Absorption Property of Sea Waters Dominated by Alexandrium affine in Coastal Waters off Tongyeong, 2017)

  • 적조는 연안 해역에서 양식어류를 폐사 시키는 등 많은 경제적 피해를 입혀왔다. 이러한 적조의 광역 분포를 효과적으로 파악하기 위하여 원격탐사가 활용되어 왔는데, 적조 해수가 가지는 흡광 특성은 원격탐사에 중요한 요소인 해수반사도를 이해함에 있어서 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 본 연구에서는 2017년 8월 통영 인근 해역에서 출현한 Alexandrium affine 종이 우점한 해수에 대한 흡광 특성을 분석하였다. 선박 관측을 통하여 총 20개 정점에서 획득한 시료에서 색소 흡광, 부유물 흡광, 용존유기물 흡광을 측정하였고, 이를 수질 변수인 엽록소 농도, 부유물 농도와 관련하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 규조류 우점 해수와는 다르게 Alexandrium 우점 시료는 400 nm 이하에서 강한 흡광을 나타내었고, 또한 400 nm - 500 nm 에서 굴곡이 크게 나타남을 확인하였다. 색소 흡광의 집적 효과 또한 규조류와 다르게 나타남을 확인하였고, 부유물 및 용존유기물 흡광 모델 (adg(λ)=adg0)e-s(λ-λ0))에서의 지수부 계수(s) 역시 기존 규조류에서 일반적으로 사용하는 0.015와는 달리 0.01이 더 적합함을 보였다.

Report on the Alpheid Shrimp Arete dorsalis (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae) from Korea

  • The continuous taxonomic study on decapods from Korean waters revealed that the alpheid shrimps collected from Jejudo Island and Busan were identified as a species belonging to the genus Arete which is an unreported genus from Korean waters. The genus Arete can be distinguished from the most similar genus Athanas by the following. The chelae are broad and oval-shaped in Arete, but in Athanas, the chelae are more or less elongated. The number of carpal segments in the 2nd pereopod is four but five, exceptionally four or six in Athanas. The epipods are present on pereopod 1 and pereopod 2 in Arete, but on pereopod 1-3, exceptionally on pereopod 1 and pereopod 2 or pereopod 1-4 in Athanas. In this paper, Arete dorsalis is reported for the first time from Korean waters. Korean Alpheidae fauna now consists of 27 species of nine genera.

  • 1996년부터 1997년 사이에 서해 연안에서 집중적으로 채집된 올챙이새우류와 그 이전에 다른 연안에서도 채집되어 보관 중이던 올챙이 새우류를 동정한 결과 Lampropidae과와 Bodotriidae과에 속하는 3 한국미기록종이 확인되어 보고한다: Hemilamprops californicus Zimmer, 1936, Bodotria parva Calman, 1907, Iphinoe sagamiensis Gamo, 1958. 이 중에서 Hemilamprops 속과 Iphinoe 속은 국내에서 처음으로 보고된다.

Two Species of the Genus Disporella (Bryozoa: Cyclostomata) from Korea

  • This paper describes two cyclostomatous bryozoans belonging to the genus Disporella Gray, 1848 found in Korean waters. This study was carried out with the materials which were collected from two localities, Jodo Island and Gapado Island, from 2014 to 2015. It is known that the genus Disporella Gray, 1848 needs a thorough revision and is difficult to identify because it has been documented in very few of the nominal species. Approximately 58 species have been recognized worldwide. One species, Disporella novaehollandiae (D'Orbigny, 1853), has been reported from Korean waters so far. Two species, D. pristis (MacGillivray, 1884) and D. wanganuiensis (Waters, 1887), distributed in the Indo-Pacific, are newly added to the Korean bryozoans fauna in this study. Accordingly, the Korean cyclostomatous bryozoans have increased to 17 species, ten genera and five families. Descriptions and illustrations of the two Disporella species using scanning electron microscopy are provided in this paper.

  • Fourteen species of the family Penaeidae have been previously reported from the Korean waters (Kim, 1977: Cha et al., 2001). Recent collections from the coastal waters of Korea revealed the presence of two penaeid species, Metapenaeopsis lata Kubo, 1949 and Parapenaeopsis cultrirostris Alcock, 1906. These two species have been reported from Japan, East China Sea and Sou China Sea, and the Indo-West Pacific low South China Sea. We present brief notes of these species as two new members of the Korean fauna. (omitted)

Larval Development of Chthamalus challengeri Hoek (Cirripedia: Thoracica: Chthamalidae) with Keys to Barnacle Larvae of Korean Coastal Waters

  • Chthamalus challengeri Hoek was collected from intertidal rocks to rear the larvae from hatching through nauplius to cyprid in the laboratory. Larval development consists of six nauplius stages and a cyprid. Unilobed labrum with a prominent protuberance and the frontolateral horns folded under the anterior cephalic shield margin are diagnostic features through all nauplius stages. The posterior border of the cephalic shield bears no posterior shield spines in nauplius stages IV-Ⅵ. There is a specific hispid seta in the fourth group of the antennal endopodite. Morphological features such as the cephalic shield, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cyprid stages are illustrated and described. The numerical setations of the antennule are found to aid in the intraspecific identification of barnacle nauplius stages without dissection. The keys to each stage of the barnacle larvae in Korean coastal waters are provided based on the reared nauplii of seven species: Pollicipes mitella Octomeris sulcata, Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus albicostatus B. trigonus, B. amphitrite, and B. improvisus inhabiting Korean coastal waters.

한국 연안의 극히 파랑환경과 Freak Wave의 특성에 관한 연구 (Extreme and Freak Wave Characteristics in the Coastal Writers of Korean Peninsula)

  • Extreme environments and freak wave characteristics in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula are analyzed using the observed wave data. Freak wave has been intensely emphasized as an important environmental force parameter in several recent research works. However, the mechanism and occurrence probability of freak wave are not clarified. The aims of this study we: to summarize the distribution of extreme environment for wind waves, and to find occurrence probability of freak wave in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula. These extreme sea conditions are discussed by applying extreme value analysis method, and the statistic characteristics are summarized which can be used to the design and analysis of coastal structures. The mechanism and the occurrence probability of freak wave are also discussed in detail using wave parameters in considered with wave deformation in the coastal waters. First Report of Mud Shrimp Austinogebia wuhsienweni (Crustacea: Decapoda: Upogebiidae) from Korean Waters

  • Specimens of Austinogebia wuhsienweni (Yu, 1931) previously recorded from China to Japan were collected at a manila clam farm of 0.5 m depth in Hongseong, Yellow Sea. They were briefly described and illustrations included color photographs, since this was the first record of this rare species from Korean waters. Three species of Upogebiidae are known from Korean waters: Upogebia major (De Haan, 1839), U. issaeffi (Balss, 1913), and A. wuhsienweni (Yu, 1931). They are similar to each other, however, the presence of the ventral spines of the rostrum, a proximal knob on the lateral margin of the uropodal endopod, and a longitudinal carina on the inner surface of the palm of the male first pereiopod can easily distinguish the present species from the two species of Upogebia.

A Study on the Fine Structure of the Marine Diatoms of Korean Coastal Waters - Genus Thalassiosira 3

  • A study on the fine structure of the marine diatom Thalassiosira has been carried out during the periods from January 2007 to March 2008 in Korean coastal waters. As the third series of the Thalassiosira species, a fine structure, description, distribution and taxonomic remarks of the six Thalassiosira species were observed by means of light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The critical features of Thalassiosira species were a shape of external tubes of marginal strutted processes and labiate process. Six species showed each different shape of external tubes, marginal strutted processes and labiate process. The shape of external tube was divided into five types: T shape of Thalassiosira curviseriata, small-rounded shape of T. lundiana, double-layer form and flame shape of T. nordenskioeldii, tulip shape of T. punctigera and tooth-shape of T. tenera. This external character may be able to key character for positive identification of the Thalassiosira species. Of these Thalassiosira lundiana, T. minuscula and T. tenera were new records for Korean coastal waters.
