  • Preliminary investigations were carried out to isolate the constituents from the stems of genus Thalictrum. Methanol extracts of eight species from the genus were examined by thin layer chromatography. The author observed three different spots with Dragendorff's reagent in Thalictrum actaefolium, whereas none was detected in Thalictrum tuberiferum and Thalictrum simplex. Various fluorescent colors with different Rf values were detected in all species by UV ray, suggesting that each species may have different components.

  • We used Maximum parsimony and Neighbor-joining to investigate phylogenetic relationship of the genus Thalictrum in Korea with 39 morphological characters. The plant materials were used for ingroup 21 taxa and outgroup 1 taxon including a Korean endemic plant. This study confirmed that Sect. Thalictrum and Sect. Camptonotum formed monophyletic group by 100% and 83% bootstrap values respectively, and Sect. Camptonotum appeared to be Sect. Thalictrum's sister group. Sect. Erythrandra and Sect. Physocarpum formed paraphyletic groups. Sect. Physocarpum except T. osmorhizoides appeared to be polytomy. Sect. Tripterium and Sect. Omalophysa formed an independent clade. The shape of stamen is the important character representing the phylogenetic pattern of the genus Thalictrum; the bat and filiform types might be derived from clavate type. The pollination patterns (entomophily, anemophily), and presence of calyx at flowering time may also be related to the evolution of the Thalictrum flowers.

  • Thalictrum species belongs to the Ranunculaceae and are perennial landscape plants which are available in the garden and potted plants. This experiment was conducted to find out the basic data for the growth effects of fertilizer levels and shading rate in seedling plug cell tray in the Thalictrum rochebrunianum, T. uchiyamai and T. coreanum. For T. rochebrunianum and T. uchiyamai, growth increased by all fertilizer level treatments as compared to non-treatment. Hyponex 1000 times of treatment showed the highest growth. All growth increased in 35% shading as compared to other treatments for T. rochebrunianum and T. coreanum. But, for T. uchiyamai growth increased in 55% shading. In general, growth of three Thalictrum species was worse in 75% shading, as compared to other shading rates. Based on the results, Thalictrum species seedling can be produced by 35-55% shading and fertilization of Hyponex 1000 times by using plug tray.

  • Three phenolic alkaloid compounds (A,B,C) were isolated from the roots of Thalictrum uchiyamai Nakai (Ranunculaceae). Compound A, a colorless crystalline substance $mp168^{\circ}$, $C_{11}H_{15}NO_2$ was identified to be corypalline (6-methoxy-7-hydroxy-N-methyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroisoquinoline) which has been reported by Wu from Thalictrum rugosum. Compound B, $mp166^{\circ}$ and Compound C, $mp164^{\circ}$ were shown aromatic rings by UV, IR spectra and chiral center by CD.

  • The effects of various plant growth regulators, both auxins and cytokinins, on cell growth and berberine production were investigated in cell suspension cultures of Thafictrum rugosum. Indole-%-acetic acid (IAA) was found to be the best for berberine production among five examined plant growth regulators and the optimum concentration of IAA was 1 $\mu \textrm M$. The enhancement compared to control 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) was more than 60%. Simultaneous addition of cytokinins such as kinetin and 6-benzylamiroyurine (BA) was inhibitory.

  • The effects of sucrose solution on cell growth and berberine production were studied in Thalictrum rugosum cell cultures. Application of sucrose solution without any other components enhanced berberine accumulation significantly in spite of slower cell growth. At high sucrose concentration, cells became very compact and fourfold increase in specific berberine content was achieved. Optimum concentration of sucrose in plain water to maximize the productivity was found to be 8%. Time course experiment in 8% sucrose solution showed that more than 5 days were required to utilize the advantage of this system efficiently. Addition of vitamins, growth regulators, and inorganic salts into the solution was not effective in increasing berberine productivity.

  • This study is about the five species of the genus Thalictrum growing abundantly in South Korea. Dried roots of plants; T. aquilegifolium var. japonica, T. simplex var. affine, T. actaefolium, T. tuberiferum were compared by morphological observation and screening test on the ingredient extracted by methanol, ether etc.. The experiments by thin-layer chromatography was at tempted to find out the similarity and the difference among them. In conclusion, the author found that: 1) A special component similar to coumarin was found under UV-ray from T. actaefolium. 2) By thin-layer chromatography, they show the corresponding spot supposed to be that of berberine and magnoflorine according to the $T_{ABLE}\;IV$. Therefore it is worthwhile considering that Thalictrum species would be a substitution for Epimedium species used as a tonic. 3) Thalictrum species has resemblance of ingredient and chemotaxonomy gives more help to classify them than the morphology.

  • The purposes of this study were to clarify of floristic composition and the landscape structure on the habitats of three Thalictrum plants, which were distributed in Daejeon, Korea. Floristic composition of habitats was organized by living in flatten open space needed a lot of sunlight and humidity. Landscape ecological structure of habitats was defined by soils of loamy skeletal mesic, slope between 25 to 30$^{\circ}$ Vegetation rating was 75 percent of woody coverage at less than 450 m above the sea levels, respectively. Distribution patterns of Thalictrum plants in Daejeon were presented on the 1 km X 1 km grid map.

  • The pollen and revisional study aimed for an elucidation of taxonomic delimitation and relationship of Thalictrum taxa in Korea, especially among the morphologically confused taxa. Pollen grains of 63 populations of 17 taxa were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Although pollen morphology was not useful for the species classification, it revealed a tendency in which Sects. Physocarpum, Erythrandra and Tripterium having broad filaments and round-tipped anthers possess closer distance between adjacent pores, less echinus number per unit area, smaller pollen, and higher echinus, on the contrary to Sects. Omalophysa, Camptonotum and Thalictrum having filiform filaments and acute-acuminate- or more or less round-tipped anthers. The palynological result did not support several section system by Tamura (1992) but one section system by Lecoyer (1885). If a infrasectional system is needed, it was suggested that the system dividing the section into two (Clauiformes and Filiformes sensu Lecoyer) would be natural on the basis of stamen and pollen characteristics. Revisional study found out that 17 taxa(16 species) of Thalictrum are distributed in Korean including T. filimentosum which presence in Korea was not confirmed.
