Preparation of Textured Bi0.5(Na,K)0.5TiO3-BiFeO3 Solid Solutions by Reactive-Templated Grain Growth Process

  • Textured $Bi_{0.5}(Na,K)_{0.5}TiO_3-BiFeO_3$ ceramics were prepared by the reactive-templated grain growth process, using platelike $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ particles. The effects of chemical composition in $Bi_{0.5}(Na,K)_{0.5}TiO_3$ on texture development and densification were examined. Textured ceramics were obtained by using $Bi_{0.5}K_{0.5}TiO_3$ as an end member of the solid solution but densification was limited. Dense ceramics were obtained by using $Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5}TiO_3$ but texture did not develop. Dense, textured ceramics were obtained by using $Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})_{0.5}TiO_3$.

  • It is well known that polycrystalline ceramics fabricated via the templated grain growth method along a desired crystallographic direction, generally along [001], exhibits enhanced piezoelectric response. Generally, the piezoelectric properties of textured ceramics depend on the degree of texture, as piezoelectric properties peak in single crystals. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the degree of texture and piezoelectric properties is fundamental. Here, we present state-of-the-art textured piezoceramics by focusing on critical issues such as the quality of templates used for texturing and proper evaluation of the degree of texture analysis. The relationship between the degree of texture and its impact on the properties of textured materials is exclusively defined by the Lotgering factor (L.F.) calculated from the X-ray diffraction profiles. Additionally, we show that L.F. is not a suitable indicator of the degree of texture, contrary to previous interpretations. This statement was further supported by the fact that the true degree of texture can be better quantified by the multiples of random distribution. This argument was justified by comparing the quantitative values of the degree of texture obtained from both methods to those of the piezoelectric charge coefficient of textured and random ceramics.

  • Piezoelectric actuators, which utilize piezoelectric crystals or ceramics, are commonly used in precision positioning applications, offering high-speed response and precise control. However, the use of low-performance ceramics and expensive single crystals is limiting their versatile use in the actuator market, necessitating the development of both high-performance and cost-effective piezoelectric materials capable of delivering higher forces and displacements. The use of textured Pb (lead)-based piezoelectric ceramics formed by so-called templated grain growth method has been identified as a promising strategy to address the performance and cost issue. This review article provides insights into recent advances in texturing Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics for improved performance in actuation applications. We discussed the relevant issues in detail focusing on current challenges and emerging trends in the textured piezoelectric ceramics for their reliability and performance in actuator applications. Grain growth and superconducting properties of melt-processed (Y-Sm-Nd)-Ba-Cu-O composite oxides

  • [ $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ ] [(YSN)-123] high $T_c$ composite superconductors with $CeO_2$ addition were systematically investigated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process in air atmosphere. A melt textured $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Nd-123) single crystal was used as a seed for achieving the c-axis alignment large grains perpendicular to the surface of (YSN)-123 composite oxides. The size of $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting inclusions of the melt textured (YSN)-123 samples with $CeO_2$ addition were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the (YSN)123 superconducting matrix except in the region very close to the Nd-123 seed crystal. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition of 91 K.

  • The microstructure evolution and the peritectic solidification of Sm$Ba_{2}$$Cu_{3}$ $O_{7-\delta}$ superconducting materials during the isothermal annealing were studied over the temperature range 1030-$1060^{\circ}C$ The faceted growth of the peritectic phase and its dependence upon Sm-diffusion in the liquid phase are discussed. A growth model is proposed to explain the growth shape of Sm123 crystals.

Amorphous Cr-Ti Texture-inducing Layer Underlying (002) Textured bcc-Cr alloy Seed Layer for FePt-C Based Heat-assisted Magnetic Recording Media

  • $Cr_{100-x}Ti_x$ amorphous texture-inducing layers (TIL) were investigated to realize highly (002) oriented $L1_0$ FePt-C granular films through hetero-epitaxial growth on the (002) textured bcc-$Cr_{80}Mn_{20}$ seed layer (bcc-SL). As-deposited TILs showed the amorphous phase in Ti content of $30{\leq}x(at%){\leq}75$. Particularly, films with $40{\leq}x{\leq}60$ kept the amorphous phase against the heat treatment over $600^{\circ}C$. It was found that preference of the crystallographic texture for bcc-SLs is directly affected by the structural phase of TILs. (002) crystallographic texture was realized in bcc-SLs deposited on the amorphous TILs ($40{\leq}x{\leq}70$), whereas (110) texture was formed in bcc-SLs overlying on crystalline TILs (x < 30 and x > 70). Correlation between the angular distribution of (002) crystal orientation of bcc-SL evaluated by full width at half maximum of (002) diffraction (FWHM) and a grain diameter of bcc-SL indicated that while the development of the lateral growth for bcc-SL grain reduces FWHM, crystallization of amorphous TILs hinders FWHM. $L1_0$ FePt-C granular films were fabricated under the substrate heating process over $600^{\circ}C$ with having different FWHM of bcc-SL. Hysteresis loops showed that squareness ($M_r/M_s$) of the films increased from 0.87 to 0.95 when FWHM of bcc-SL decreased from $13.7^{\circ}$ to $3.8^{\circ}$. It is suggested that the reduction of (002) FWHM affects to the overlying MgO film as well as FePt-C granular film by means of the hetero-epitaxial growth.

  • The reconstruction characteristics of MgO (111) textured protective layer by over-frequency accelerated discharge in AC-PDP were investigated and correlated to the variations of electronic structures. The reconstruction process and exaggerated grain growth (EGG) were explained by defect-assisted 2-D nucleation and growth mechanism combined with charged cluster model.

  • 압전 세라믹스는 전기에너지와 기계에너지를 상호 전환할 수 있는 성질을 기반으로 엑츄에이터 및 트렌스듀서 등에 사용되는 핵심 소재이다. 결정배향 성장법(TGG)은 다결정 세라믹스의 압전 특성을 획기적으로 향상시킬 수 있는 방법으로 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 하지만, TGG 방식을 통해 결정립을 배향하는 과정은 여러 단계의 최적화가 필요하기 때문에 입문자에게는 상당히 도전적인 기술이다. 따라서 이 기고문에서는 입문자의 입장에서 TGG를 가장 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 납작한 모양의 템플릿을 합성하기 위한 용융염 합성기법 및 실제 결정배향을 위한 Tape Casting 과정 나아가 배향도를 향상시키기 위해 주의할 점에 이르기까지 TGG 전반에 대한 내용을 제공하고자 한다. 본 기고문이 TGG 방법에 대한 이해도를 높이고 활용 및 개선하고자 하는 모든 연구자들에게 정보 및 통찰을 제공할 수 있는 기본 참고서가 되기를 희망한다.

  • Several practical applications of melt-textured bulk superconductors require the complex-shaped products such as curved, ring-shaped, and drilled blocks rather than simple shaped pellets. However, melt-textured bulk superconductors are often damaged when they are cut, grinded, or drilled. With the aim of reducing such damages, we have investigated the preparation of the complex-shaped bulk superconductors by previously machining binder-added precursors and pre-sintered precursors. We could produce various complex-shaped bulk superconductors without cracking from these machined precursors
