  • The $\{10\bar{1}2\}$ twinning characteristics, such as active twin variants, volume fraction of twins with strain, twin morphology, twin texture and angle relationship between twins, were dependent on the activation mode (i.e., tension parallel to the caxis or compression perpendicular to the c-axis). The selection criterion of active twin variants was governed by the Schmid law. This activation of selected twin variants depending on the activation mode consequently caused a totally different plastic deformation behavior in two activation modes. The differences in the deformation characteristics, such as flow stress and work hardening rate, between both activation modes were explained in relation with activation stresses for slips and twinning, relative activities of twinning and slips during plastic deformation, grain refining effect by twin boundaries (Hall-Petch effect), and twinning-induced change in activities of slips.

Spherulitic Morphologies of Poly(ethylene terephthalate), Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate), and Their Blend

  • The supermolecular structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN), and their blend were investigated with optical microscopy and small angle light scattering. With increasing the crystallization temperature, incomplete spherulitic texture was developed for the PET samples. At a high crystallization temperature of 220 $^{\circ}C$, the light scattering pattern represented a random collection of uncorrelated lamellae. The general morphological appearances for the PEN samples were similar to that of the PET. A notable feature was that the spherulites of the PEN formed at 200 $^{\circ}C$ showed regular concentric bands arising from a regular twist in the radiating lamellae. The spherulitic morphology of the PET/PEN blend was largely influenced by the changes of the sequence distribution in polymer chains determined by the level of transesterifcation. The increased sequential irregularity in the polymer chains via transesterification caused a morphological transition from a regular folded crystallite to a tilted lamellar crystallite.

  • 텍스쳐 분석은 장면 분할, 물체 인식, 모양과 깊이 인식 등의 많은 영상 처리 분야에서 중요한 기술 중의 하나이다. 그러나 실영상에 포함된 다양한 텍스쳐 성분에 대해서 보편적으로 적용 가능한 효율적인 방법들에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 텍스쳐 인식을 위해서 비교사 학습 방법에 기반 한 효율적인 텍스쳐 분석 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법은 텍스쳐 영상이 지닌 방향특징 정보로서 각(angle)과 강도(power)를 추출하여 자기 조직화 신경회로망에 의해서 블록기반으로 군집화(clustering)된다. 비교사적 군집 결과는 통합(merging)과 불림(dilation) 과정을 통해서 영상에 내재된 텍스쳐 성분의 분할을 수행한다. 제안된 시스템의 성능 평가를 위해서는 다양한 형태의 다중 텍스쳐 영상을 생성하여 적용한 후 그 유효성을 보인다.

제한공간에서의 폴리(트리메틸렌 테레프탈레이트)의 결정화 거동 (Crystallization Behavior of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) in a Confined Geometry)

  • 제한공간에서 형성되는 폴리(트리메틸렌 테레프탈레이트) (PTT)의 결정구조를 광학현미경, 소각 광산란 및 X-선 회절로 조사하였다. 인자 $\delta$로 대표할 수 있는 배제 성분의 이동거리는 폴리(에틸렌 테레프탈레이트) (PET/PTT) 블렌드의 형태구조 패턴을 결정하는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 단계 결정화할 경우, PTT 결정화는 앞서 성장한 PET 결정의 구정 사이 영역에서 시작되었으며, 구정 사이 영역이 채워질 때까지 진행하였다. PET 구정 표면은 PTT 결정화에 매우 효과적인 핵 생성 작용을 유도함으로써 transcrystalline 구조의 PTT 결정을 유도하였다. 그 결과 PTT가 많은 상에서 전형적인 구정 구조와 함께 transcrystalline구조가 혼재하는 독특한 형태구조가 관찰되었다. PET 구정의 라멜라 사이나 피브릴 사이의 영역에서는 공간적 제한으로 인하여 PTT분자들의 형태 자유도가 감소하였으며, 이러한 감소 요인은 PET구정 내ㆍ외부에서의 PTT 결정화와 용융 거동에 차이를 유발하였다.

Iris Image Enhancement for the Recognition of Non-ideal Iris Images

  • Iris recognition for biometric personnel identification has gained much interest owing to the increasing concern with security today. The image quality plays a major role in the performance of iris recognition systems. When capturing an iris image under uncontrolled conditions and dealing with non-cooperative people, the chance of getting non-ideal images is very high owing to poor focus, off-angle, noise, motion blur, occlusion of eyelashes and eyelids, and wearing glasses. In order to improve the accuracy of iris recognition while dealing with non-ideal iris images, we propose a novel algorithm that improves the quality of degraded iris images. First, the iris image is localized properly to obtain accurate iris boundary detection, and then the iris image is normalized to obtain a fixed size. Second, the valid region (iris region) is extracted from the segmented iris image to obtain only the iris region. Third, to get a well-distributed texture image, bilinear interpolation is used on the segmented valid iris gray image. Using contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) enhances the low contrast of the resulting interpolated image. The results of CLAHE are further improved by stretching the maximum and minimum values to 0-255 by using histogram-stretching technique. The gray texture information is extracted by 1D Gabor filters while the Hamming distance technique is chosen as a metric for recognition. The NICE-II training dataset taken from UBRIS.v2 was used for the experiment. Results of the proposed method outperformed other methods in terms of equal error rate (EER).

Differential Morphological, Structural and Biological Characteristics of Cysts in Heterodera Species in Korea

  • Morphological (cyst shape, color, and sizes [length (L), maximum width (W), volume and "a" (L/W)]), structural (vulvar cone slope angle [VCSA], surface wrinkle [VCSW], cyst wall thickness, composition, and texture) and biological characteristics (fecundity, hatching, and emergence [number of second-stage juveniles (J2) from a cyst]) in preceding Heterodera glycines (Hg), currently-recorded H. sojae (Hs) and H. trifolii (Ht) were examined by microscopy. Cysts were lemon-shaped, indicating the genus is Heterodera except for Hs that formed frequently globular cysts with significantly flatter VCSA (102.2°) with smooth VCSW than Hg (50.6°) and Ht (82.0°), but not genus Globodera because of the presence of vulvar cone in Hs. Ht was significantly larger in all morphological characteristics than Hg and Hs, suggesting Ht may be diagnosed differentially by cyst sizes and also host plant preferences. Hs showed smaller "a" value with more globular shape and stronger structures with more thickened and strengthened collagen-like texture of cyst wall than Hg and Ht. This suggests Hs may be diagnosed differently by structural characteristics from the others, especially Hg with similar cyst sizes. There were no significant differences in emergence (inoculum potential) among cyst nematodes due to the offset of fecundity and hatching rate; however, the inoculum potential of Hs may be not so persistent as Hg and Ht in fields because of its lower fecundity and higher hatching rate (causing rapid inoculum loss) than the others. These characteristics of cysts provide information useful for simple and differential diagnoses and reliable management of cyst nematodes.

Effect of sous-vide cooking conditions on the physicochemical, microbiological and microstructural properties of duck breast meat

  • Objective: Sous-vide cooking offers several advantages for poultry meat, including enhanced tenderness, reduced cooking loss, and improved product yield. However, in duck meat, there are challenges associated with using the sous-vide method. The prolonged cooking time at low temperatures can lead to unstable microbial and oxidative stabilities. Thus, we aimed to assess how varying sous-vide cooking temperatures and durations affect the physicochemical and microbial characteristics of duck breast meat, with the goal of identifying an optimal cooking condition. Methods: Duck breast meat (Anas platyrhynchos) aged 42 days and with an average weight of 1,400±50 g, underwent cooking under various conditions (ranging from 50℃ to 80℃) for either 60 or 180 min. Then, physicochemical, microbial, and microstructural properties of the cooked duck breast meat were assessed. Results: Different cooking conditions affected the quality attributes of the meat. The cooking loss, lightness, yellowness, Hue angle, whiteness, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values of the duck breast meat increased with the increase in cooking temperature and time. In contrast, the redness and chroma values decreased with the increase in cooking temperature and time. Cooking of samples higher than 60℃ increased the volatile basic nitrogen contents and TBARS. Microbial analysis revealed the presence of Escherichia coli and Coliform only in the samples cooked at 50℃ and raw meat. Cooking at lower temperature and shorter time increased the tenderness of the meat. Microstructure analysis showed that the contraction of myofibrils and meat density increased upon increasing the cooking temperature and time. Conclusion: Our data indicate that the optimal sous-vide method for duck breast meat was cooking at 60℃ for 60 min. This temperature and time conditions showed good texture properties and microbial stability, and low level of TBARS of the duck breast meat.

Factor Analysis of Genetic Evaluations For Type Traits of Canadian Holstein Sires and Cows

  • Factor analysis was applied as a multivariate statistical technique to official genetic evaluations of type classification traits for 1,265,785 Holstein cows and 10,321 sires computed from data collected between August 1982 and June 1994 in Canada. Type traits included eighteen linear descriptive traits and eight major score card traits. Principal components of the factor analysis showed that only five factors explain the information of the genetic value of linear descriptive traits for both cows and sires. Factor 1 included traits related to mammary system, like texture, median suspensory, fore attachment, fore teat placement and rear attachment height and width. Factor 2 described stature, size, chest width and pin width. These two factors had a similar pattern for both cows and sires. In constrast, Factor 3 for cows involved only bone-quality, while in addition for sires, Factor 3 included foot angle, rear legs desirability and legs set. Factor 4 for cows related to foot angle, set of rear leg and leg desirability, while Factor 4 related to loin strenth and pin setting for sires. Finally, Factor 5 included loin strength and pin setting for cows and described only pin setting for sires. Two factors only were required to describe score card traits of cows and sires. Factor 1 related to final score, feet and legs, udder traits, mammary system and dairy character, while frame/capacity and rump were described by Factor 2. Communality estimates which determine the proportion of variance of a type trait that is shared with other type traits via the common factor variant were high, the highest ${\geq}$ 80% for final score, stature, size and chest width. Pin width and pin desirability had the lowest communality, 56% and 37%. Results indicated shifts in emphasis over the twelve-year period away from udder traits and dairy character, and towards size, scale and width traits. A new system that computes fmal score from type components has been initiated.

클러스터링 기반의 3D 위치표시용 스마트 플랫폼설계 (Design of Clustering based Smart Platform for 3D Position)

  • 본 논문에서는 사물인터넷(IoT, Internet of Things) 사용자가 안드로이드 플랫폼 기반의 홈 허브가 유니티 3D 모델링으로 사물인터넷 센서의 3D 위치표출 방안이 제안되었다. 특별히, 3차원 공간에서 IoT 센서는 설치 공간별로 클러스링을 통해 IoT센서 속성과 배터리 상태를 모니터링 방식을 설계한다. 또한, 3차원 공간상에서 신규 설치한 IoT 센서가 인접 센서들의 무선신호의 비콘신호 및 도착시간 분석에 따른 센서의 위치를 추적하는 방식은 센서의 무선신호세기(RSSI, received signal strength indicator)와 방위각을 기반으로 3차원 공간상에서 수신 각도에 따른 센서의 3D 위치를 표출할 수 있다. 이때 유니티 런쳐가 탑재된 스마트 허브 플랫폼은 사물인터넷 센서의 동작상태 모니터링이 가능하며, 다양한 센서의 생애주기를 관리할 수 있도록 동영상이 3차원 텍스쳐가 동시에 연동하도록 활용할 수 있다.

전통 회 문양과 포 셔닐 텍스타일을 활용한 패션 디자인 개발 (Development of fashion design applying traditional fretwork patterns and Faux Chenille textiles)

  • The purpose of this study is to apply the traditional Chinese fretwork on the 'Faux Chenille' textile work method in a way of enhancing the decorative features of patterns and developing the fashion design. As for the method, it works on the historic background and advancement of the fretwork and it refers to the bibliographies pertinent to the traditional Chinese geometric pattern. The result are as follows. First, pure cotton and 100% rayon are mixed to make it feasible to produce the texture for the material to be tender and enhanced, and in the process of washing and drying the Faux Chenille textile. The Faux Chenille textile is an important material that is required to select materials with great absorption capability as the most effective material to re-visualize the lines and patterns by sustaining the diagonal lines. Second, the fretwork is designed to process the basic formation for 90° angle with the sense of unlimited extensive line and changes with straight line. It has been confirmed that, if the angle that controls the Faux Chenille textile and the tailoring interval are well aligned, the expression of traditional geometric pattern would be effective and it may be expressed in contemporary style. Third, through the fashion design application by utilizing the Faux Chenille textile of the fretwork, it is confirmed that the contemporary application of the traditional culture could be expressed uniquely and creatively while it is affirmed that the western technique and Asian culture can be blended in harmony.
