  • An adaptive contour smoothing algorithm designed as a preprocessor for shape coders is presented. In the proposed method, the degree of the adaptive smoothing is controlled based on the significance of each contour point, which is quantified according to inter-region contrast in an intensity image. The actual smoothing consists of an expansion operator and a thinning algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method results in a saving of about 20% in number of coded bits with a negligible additional texture degradation in the reconstructed intensity image.

  • In this paper, we propose a watermarking method for protecting the ownership of three-dimensional (3D) content generated from depth and texture images. After selecting the target areas to preserve the watermark by depth-image-based rendering, the reference viewpoint image is moved right and left in the depth map until the maximum viewpoint change is obtained and the overlapped region is generated for marking space. The region is divided into four subparts and scanned. After applying discrete cosine transform, the watermarks are inserted. To extract the watermark, the viewpoint can be changed by referring to the viewpoint image and the corresponding depth image initially, before returning to the original viewpoint. The watermark embedding and extracting algorithm are based on quantization. The watermarked image is attacked by the methods of JPEG compression, blurring, sharpening, and salt-pepper noise.

  • Change detection algorithms take two image frames and return the locations of newly introduced objects which cause differences between the images. This paper presents a new change detection method, which classifies intensity changes due to introduced objects, reflected light and shadow from the objects to their neighborhood, and the noise, and exactly localizes the introduced objects. For classification and localization, first we analyze the histogram of the intensity difference between two images, and estimate multiple threshold values. Second we estimate candidate object boundaries using the gradient difference between two images. Using those threshold values and candidate object boundaries, we segment the frame difference image into multiple regions. Finally we classify whether each region belongs to the introduced objects or not using textures in the region. Experiments show that the proposed method exactly localizes the objects in various scenes with different lighting.

  • The rapid growth of computer-based image database, necessity of a system that can manage an image information is increasing. This paper presents a region-based image retrieval method using the combination of color(autocorrelogram), texture(CWT moments) and shape(Hu invariant moments) features. As a color feature, a color autocorrelogram is chosen by extracting from the hue and saturation components of a color image(HSV). As a texture, shape and position feature are extracted from the value component. For efficient similarity confutation, the extracted features(color autocorrelogram, Hu invariant moments, and CWT moments) are combined and then precision and recall are measured. Experiment results for Corel and VisTex DBs show that the proposed image retrieval algorithm has 94.8% Precision, 90.7% recall and can successfully apply to image retrieval system.

  • Image inpainting is the widely used technique to restore a damaged region or to fill a hole in an image. The exemplar-based technique effectively generates new texture by copying colour values of the most correlated patch in the source into the empty region of the current patch. In traditional exemplar-based synthesis, the patch correlation is computed using only the already filled pixels of the current patch. Thus, by ignoring the correlation between the hole regions of the two patches, an undesirable patch which is highly correlated with the current patch in the already filled area but considerably dissimilar in the area to be filled can be selected, which results in bad texture propagation. To avoid such problems, a new exemplar-based inpainting method using patch extrapolation is proposed. The empty part of the current patch is extrapolated beforehand, and then the complete patch is used for finding its exemplar. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides more natural synthesis results than the conventional ones.

  • As the availability of an image information has been significantly increasing, necessity of system that can manage an image information is increasing. Accordingly, we proposed the region-based content retrieval(CBIR) algorithm based on an efficient combination of an image segmentation, an image texture, a color feature and an image's shape and position information. As a color feature, a HSI color histogram is chosen which is known to measure spatial of colors well. We used active contour and CWT(complex wavelet transform) to perform an image segmentation and extracting an image texture. And shape and position information are obtained using Hu invariant moments in the luminance of HSI model. For efficient similarity computation, the extracted features(color histogram, Hu invariant moments, and complex wavelet transform) are combined and then precision and recall are measured. As a experimental result using DB that was supported by www.freefoto.com. the proposed image retrieval engine have 94.8% precision, 82.7% recall and can apply successfully image retrieval system.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the origin of materials of sanddune in the Chungcheongnamdo. The sands consist mainly of quartz with lesser amount of feldspar and other heavy minerals. With the exception of those from the granite, the sands have a very fine texture. Another characteristic of the sand grains is the low degrees of roundness and grading which indicates that the source areas of the material are not far from the accumulating field. The rivers and streams of this region are not effective in transporting sediments for the coastal dunes. It has been recognized that the beaches and sanddunes have recently been receded as a result of the decrease in materials and the devastating actions of the breakers. The degradation process occurs most actively when the spring tides attack the beaches and foredunes. There are strata with red tint along the coastal areas of the Chungcheongnamdo which trace their origin back to the Pleistocene. From the fact that they contain little or no gravels, the strata are believed to have been the sanddunes during the last interglacial period. This fossil dunes provide part of the materials for the development of the present-day sanddunes along the coastal areas of the region.

  • True motion estimation is necessary for deinterlacing, frame-rate conversion, and film judder compensation. There have been several block-based approaches to find true motion vectors by tracing minimum sum-of-absolute-difference (SAD) values by considering spatial and temporal consistency. However, the algorithms cannot find robust motion vectors when the texture of objects is changed. To find the robust motion vectors in the region, a recursive vector selection scheme and an adaptive weighting parameter are proposed. Previous frame vectors are recursively averaged to be utilized for motion error region. The weighting parameter controls fidelity to input vectors and the recursively averaged ones, where the input vectors come from the conventional estimators. If the input vectors are not reliable, then the mean vectors of the previous frame are used for temporal consistency. Experimental results show more robust motion vectors than those of the conventional methods in time-varying texture objects.
