  • High-purity and super-hard nano-polycrystalline diamond has been successfully synthesized by direct conversion from high-purity graphite under static pressures above 15 GPa and temperatures above $2300^{\circ}C$. This paper describes research findings on the formation mechanism of nano-structure and on the contributing factor leading to high hardness.

  • Gymnodinium mikimotoi is one of several species of flagellates that cause harmful red tides. The red tides of G. mikimotoi have occurred only along $33-35^{\circ}$ N, e.g. Chinhae Bay in Korea, tile Seto Inland Sea and Kumane-Nada in Japan. I try to reproduce the formation of red ties of G. mikimotoi at Suo-Nada and Iyo-Nada, the western part of Seto Inland Sea, Japan in July 1985 with the use of four-dimensional assimilation model including the biological process of G. mikimotoi in this paper. • There are various diseases of the gallbladder and cystic duct, and imaging diagnosis is challenging for the rare among them. However, some rare diseases show characteristic imaging findings or patient history; therefore, familiarity with the imaging presentation of rare diseases may improve diagnostic accuracy and patient management. The purpose of this article is to describe the imaging findings of rare diseases of the gallbladder and cystic duct and identify their pathological correlations with these diseases.

  • A feasibility study on the seismic design of nuclear reactor buildings with application of a seismic isolation system is introduced. After the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake in Japan of 1995, seismic isolation technologies have been widely employed for commercial buildings. Having become a mature technology, seismic isolation systems can be applied to NPP facilities in areas of high seismicity. Two reactor buildings are discussed, representing the PWR and BWR buildings in Japan, and the application of seismic isolation systems is discussed. The isolation system employing rubber bearings with a lead plug positioned (LRB) is examined. Through a series of seismic response analyses using the so-named standard design earthquake motions covering the design basis earthquake motions obtained for NPP sites in Japan, the responses of the seismic isolated reactor buildings are evaluated. It is revealed that for the building structures examined herein: (1) the responses of both isolated buildings and isolating LRBs fulfill the specified design criteria; (2) the responses obtained for the isolating LRBs first reach the ultimate condition when intensity of motion is 2.0 to 2.5 times as large as that of the design-basis; and (3) the responses of isolated reactor building fall below the range of the prescribed criteria.

  • The field of cytochrome P450 pharmacogenomics has progressed rapidly during the past 25 years. Recently, conjugating enzymes including sulfotransferase, acetyltransferase, glucuronosyltransferase and glutathione transferase have been also extensively studied. All the major human drug-metabolizing P450 enzymes and some conjugating enzymes have been identified and cloned, and the major gene variants that cause inter-individual variability in drug response and are related to adverse drug reactions have been identified. This information now provides the basis for the use of predictive pharmacogenomics to yield drug therapies that are more efficient and safer. Today, we understand which drugs warrant dosing based on pharmacogenomics to improve drug treatment. It is anticipated that genotyping could be used to personalize drug treatment for vast numbers of subjects, decreasing the cost of drug treatment and increasing the efficacy of drugs and health in general. It is assumed that such personalized P450 gene-based treatment which is so-called tailor(order)-made drug therapy would be relevant for 10-20% of all drug therapy in the future.

  • An expert network administrator is not always stationed as disasters happen. In that case, it is desirable that a novice administrator is capable of taking part in network recovery operations as well. In this paper, an agent-based network management system in emergency situations is presented. We use the Active Information Resource based Network Management System (AIR-NMS) to relieve the human administrator from parts of her management tasks and present an interface that remotely can control this management system. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated by experiments using a prototype system.
