The conventional blasting method generates serious blasting vibration and underbreak/overbreak in spite of its high efficiency for rock excavation. To overcome these disadvantages, this paper introduces an alternative excavation method that combines the conventional blasting process with the free surface on the perimeter of the tunnel face using waterjet cutting technology. This proposed excavation method has advantages of (1) reducing vibration and noise level; (2) minimizing underbreak and overbreak; and (3) maximizing excavation efficiency. To verify the effects of the proposed excavation method, field tests were performed with a smooth blasting method at the same excavation conditions. Test results show that the vibration is reduced by up to 55% and little underbreak/overbreak is generated compared with the smooth blasting method. In addition, the excavation efficiency of the proposed method is greater than that of the smooth blasting method. The proposed blasting method with a free surface using waterjet cutting can be applied to urban excavation construction as well as to underground structure construction.
Blasting is necessary for excavation processes since more than 70% of korean land is consist of mountains. The vibration and noise accompanied by blasting processes usually bring about public complaints. Blasting patterns are chosen by economical efficiency, stability and construction conveniency. However, there are many alternatives without control to settle the popular complaint. To prevent those alternatives, standard blasting method for design and construction were suggested by MLTM (Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs) in 2006. However, standard blasting pattern of MLTM was designed in a lump irrespective of types of rocks. Economical loss may occur by ignoring the characteristics of rocks for the applications to the rocks with low intensity, such as shale, or containing many joint. We deduced some economical progresses by performing test blasting with adjusted drilling spacing and length of burden considering the characteristics of local rock. This paper suggests the start of case studies for different applications. Economic improvement can be expected by applying those results deduced from case studies to design and construction.
The repeated blasting vibration, which is induced commonly in NATM excavation site, can cause a severe damage to the nearby facilities. It is known that the most effective method for reducing blasting vibration includes the use of electronic detonator, deck charge and change of cut method, and so forth. In order to analyze the effect of blasting vibration reduction, in this study, three-dimensional FDM (Finite Difference Method) program FLAC3D has been used for reflecting the blasting hole, delayed time and charging amount. Also the numerical analysis has been performed by applying a dynamic load to each blasting hole. The cut method has been applied with several methods, such as V-cut and Double-drilled parallel cut, which are common in tunnel construction sites. Also, the field test blasting has been carried out in order to compare the measured data with results of numerical analysis. It was shown that the numerical analysis and the field measurement coincide well.

If slope height was more than 20 meters, we conducted an analysis of stereographic projection and limit equilibrium at this slope. We proposed reduction of slope face angle and reinforcement of rock bolt depending on analysis. Blasting design : Standard pattern based on result of local test blasting was made for blasting design. Vibration criterion was set for less than 3.0mm/s because of outworn buildings and inhabitants opinions. Production blasting and Controlled blasting has been done as Construction standard pattern. After Vibration Monitoring has been done, so that we can control of complement. "Bidding Document" and AASHTO 2001 "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets" were so for design criteria of earthwork but they were different actual design criteria and left something to be desired in Afghanistan. Therefore, although "Bidding Document" and "AASHTO 2001" were basic design criteria, domestic design criteria was reflected in this design criteria for complement by discussion with supervisor. Drainage design : For stability ratio, ditch of arch block and stonework was designed by rainfall data for the 13 years and discussion with supervisor. Pavement was designed as flexible pavement. Because these days in Afghanistan postwar repair works, especially urgent repairing of roads and newly making of roads, are very highly in progress, I think that Afghanistan is the region about which our construction technical experts should have great concerns.
In this study, the applicability of underground displacement sensors was considered through rock blasting tests to develop a relatively inexpensive and efficient slope failure prediction system that can quickly detect the risk of slope failure in advance and issue predictions and warnings with accurate judgment. In the blasting experiment, the sensor located close to the blasting source showed a large displacement due to crushing inside the rock and the sensor located away from the blasting source showed a relatively small strain. This study confirmed that the wired and wireless type underground displacement sensor system can be applied to measure the behavior of the rock slope, and it can be used as a basic data for establishing an early warning system to predict slope failure.

Bonding strength of shotcrete is a significant influential factor which plays the role of collapse prevention of tunnel crown and of debonding prevention of shotcrete induced by the blasting vibration. Thus, the evaluation of the shotcrete bonding state is one of the core components for shotcrete quality control. In this study, the peak particle velocities induced by blasting were measured on the shotcrete in a tunnel construction site and its effect on the bonding state of shotcrete is investigated. Drilling and blasting technique was used for the excavation of intersection tunnel connecting the main tunnel with the service tunnel. Blast-induced vibrations were monitored at some points of the main tunnel and the service tunnel. The shotcrete bonding state was evaluated by using impact-echo test coupled with the time-frequency domain analysis which is called short-time Fourier transformation. Analysis results of blast-induced vibrations and the time-frequency domain impact-echo signals showed that the blasting condition applied to the excavation of intersection tunnel hardly affects on the tunnel shotcrete bonding state. The general blasting practice in Korea was evaluated to have a minor negative impact on shotcrete quality.

Because of urbanization, Industrialization and expansion of transportation network, blasting works are recently increasing in construction field. The blasting work influences environmental effects to residents and the safety of facilities around the working place, so the development of blasting technology is needed to reduce the damage to residents. The blasting mechanism in the hole was studied and tested in the blasting sites by the difference of diameter between explosives and drilling hole, which is named by the decoupling effect. This effect was tested by changing the medium between explosives and hole wall in three working sites(railway, highway and industrial complex). The vibration velocity of blasting was recorded and vibration equations were produced by regression analyses. Finally, the structure separation distance was derived using these equations. The testing results show that the specific gravity of medium is larger, the separation distance is smaller and the duration time of blasting is shorter in case of large specific gravity of medium, so the vibration effect stops more fastly in the water compared with the air.

In this study, in order to reduce appeals regarding vibration and noise from blasts, the optimum delay-time of the electronic detonator, which can minimize blast vibration, is found through blast-waveform composition and blasting simulation, and we have developed the full-face Sequential Blasting Method based on the studies of damping properties of full-face section blasting. The optimum delay-time of the electronic detonator and Full-face Sequential Blasting Method using electronic detonator was applied to the Gyeongbu high-speed railway construction site to test the feasibility of this method.
Recently on Jeju island there has been a lot of development and construction. However random distribution of porous basalt and clinker seam generated from volcanic activities often interrupt and greatly reduce efficiency of blasting necessary for construction. Three test blasts were operated to solve the inefficiency problem and results indicated that a powder factor of 0.40~0.45 $kg/cm^3$ is necessary to increase the efficiency of blasting. Also the blasting scheme should be concerned whether clinker seams exists in excavation levels or not.
