  • Theoretical and experimental result studies of the unconfined penetration test (UP) method are conducted to suggest a new test method by improving the UP method for determination of the tensile strength of compacted fine-grained soils. From the theoretical aspect, the tensile strength of the specimen is estimated from the maximum load by the theory of perfect plasticity with assumptions, sufficient local deformability and modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Experimentally, some factors including relative size of specimen-disc, disc diameter, and loading rate are needed more study, because these factors significantly affect the results of tensile strength. Improvement of the alignement between two discs and specimen in the UP test is also necessary to eliminate the error due to eccentrically loading.

  • In this study, we tried to establish the method of evaluating the tensile properties of the ring specimen of Arsene which have gauge length. In this result, we verified the availability of central piece. We made ring specimens and devices such as central piece, pins, and clevises. A proper tensile speed was determined by pre-test. The result of main test was calibrated and compared with the result of FEM. To obtain the tensile properties from the ring test result, we observed two relationships: one is strain-displacement and the other is load ratio-displacement. The tensile properties could be evaluated by using these relationships.

  • An experimental study on material characterization and mechanical properties of SMC(Sheet Molding Compounds) compression method parts was carried out. Simple compression test using grease oil as a lubricant was carried out to characterize flow stress of SMC at elevated temperatures. Two different mold temperatures, $130^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}150^{\circ}C$ and two different mold speeds, 15, 45 mm/min were used for preparing the specimen of SMC compression molded parts. Surface roughness, tensile, and 3-point bending tests were used to determine the effects of molding temperatures and speeds on mechanical properties of compression molded SMC parts. Orientation and distribution of glass fiber in the compression molded SMC parts were also investigated by photographing the burnt flat specimen and taking SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) of cross-sectional T-specimen.

  • Bond strength of reinforcing bar to high-performance concrete using Belite cement is explored using beam end test specimen. The key parameters for the bond test are slump of concrete, top bar effect, and strength of concrete in addition to concrete covers. Specimen failed in the typical brittle bond failure splitting the concrete cover as the wedging action. The test results show that for the group with portland cement I using superplasticizer additional slump does not decrease the bond strength of the top bar is less than bond strength of bottom bar, but the top bar factor satisfy the modification factor for top reinforcement. The result also show that bond strength is function of square root of concrete compressive strength and cover thickness. More detailed evaluation will be conducted from the test specimen with high strength concrete using the belite cement.

  • In this study, an injection mold of tensile test specimen was manufactured by international standard. Pressure and temperature in the cavity of the injection mold was measured by sensors. Simulation of injection molding process was performed with the same condition of experiment and linear structural tensile analysis was also performed with the initial condition of the residual stress induced by injection molding analysis. Normalized elastic coefficient of tensile test was compared with that of structural analysis. It was shown that the residual stress induced by injection molding has an effect on both the experiment of tensile test and linear structural analysis.

  • In this study, an antibiosis of antimicrobial mortar developed to reduce biochemical corrosion of sewage facilities concrete was evaluated. First, artificial acceleration test reflecting similarly biochemical corrosion of mortar was developed. Antimicrobial mortar specimen were experimented in this test and antibiosis of it was evaluated by SEM and EDX. As a results of the study, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on the plain specimen were survived for 20 weeks in this test. But sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on antimicrobial specimen were survived less than the plain, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were externally distorted and destroyed. So the antibiosis of an antimicrobial mortar was verified by it.

  • In this study, the spalling properties of Polypropylene reinforced concrete were evaluated by the restrained ring-type test. As a result of the experiment with the fiber mixture ratio set at 0, 0.15 vol.%, The PP fiber reinforced specimen showed lower water vapor pressure as a whole than the Plain specimen, but the restraint stress was measured to be higher. This is thought to be due to the fact that higher thermal stresses were applied in the PP fiber reinforced test specimen.

  • Predicting fracture properties requires an understanding of structural failure behaviour in relation to specimen type, dimension, and notch length. Facture properties are evaluated using various testing methods, wedge splitting test being one of them. The wedge splitting test was numerically modelled three dimensionally using the finite element method on self compacting concrete specimens with varied specimen and notch depths in the current work. The load - Crack mouth opening displacement curves and the angle of rotation with respect to notch opening till failure are used to assess the fracture properties. Furthermore, based on the simulation results, failure curve was built to forecast the fracture behaviour of self-compacting concrete. The fracture failure curve revealed that the failure was quasi-brittle in character, conforming to non-linear elastic properties for all specimen depth and notch depth combinations.

  • This study dealt with size effect of specimen in measuring deformation strength and estimating rut resistance of asphalt concretes under static loading using Kim test. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 6 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders were used for preparation of 14 dense-graded mixtures. Mixtures were prepared based on optimum asphalt content by Marshall compactor (S= 10cm) and gyratory compactor (S= 15cm) for Kim test and for wheel tracking test. In statistical analysis by general linear model (GLM) procedure of SAS, the diameter of specimen was found not to be a significant factor that affect the Kim test result. Therefore, it was found that either loom-diameter or 15cm-diameter of specimen gave no significant difference in deformation strength ($K_D$) values in Kim test for any aggregate mixture. However, the thickness of specimen was found to be a significant factor in determining $K_D$. It is estimated that $K_D$ is a function of y, vertical deformation, and y has something to do with thickness of specimen. Therefore, it is suggested that the thickness of specimen should not be higher than 6.6cm, and the correction factor depending on the thickness value should be developed in the future study.

  • Adhesion strength of single layer ceramic capacitor sheet was measured using a peel testing system developed in this study. The peel test specimens with various dimensions were prepared from the ceramic sheet cast on the PET film. In peel test, the sheet specimen was adhered on the glass jig floating on the liquid media, which was designed to minimize the friction, and the specimen was then pulled up by micro-actuator. During the separation of the sheet from the PET film, peel force was measured. To normalize the testing condition, 3 different widths of the specimen were selected: 5, 10 and 20 mm. was used Furthermore, testing speed effect was investigated in this study. From the resullts using various testing conditions, the standard method for the peel strength testing may be suggested. Based on the testing condition, effect of peel angle on the strength was experimentally examined. It was found that the adhesive strength for the ceramic sheet is nearly identical, irrespective of the specimen width ranged from 5 to 20 mm, while the adhesive strength was increased with increasing testing speed. Furthermore, the strength was shown to be dependent on the peel angle.
