Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of music therapy according to preferred music and to identify the effect of duration time and starting point of music therapy on anxiety and vital signs in spinal anesthesia operations. Method: These subjects were categorized into three groups based on the order of the date of operation. Data on anxiety and vital signs for this study were collected from them. The collected data were analyzed by $X^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test and ANCOVA. Result: The results of this study showed that preferred music, differences of duration times and starting points of music therapy didn't make significant differences in anxiety and vital signs among the three groups. However for anxiety, there was a meaningful difference within three groups. This result indicates even randomly chosen music by nurses considering the patients' age makes a meaningful difference in anxiety. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the conclusion can be made that music therapy is a useful nursing implementation to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing operations with spinal anesthesia.
Taurine has a number of beneficial pharmacological actions in the brain such as anxiolytic and neuroprotective actions. We explored to test whether taurine could be transported to the central nervous system through the intranasal route. Following intranasal administration of taurine in mice, elevated plus maze test, activity cage test and rota rod test were carried out to verify taurine's effect on anxiety. For the characterization of potential mechanism of taurine's anti-anxiety action, mouse convulsion tests with strychnine, picrotoxin, yohimbine, and isoniazid were employed. A significant increase in the time spent in the open arms was observed when taurine was administered through the nasal route in the elevated plus maze test. In addition, vertical and horizontal activities of mice treated with taurine via intranasal route were considerably diminished. These results support the hypothesis that taurine can be transported to the brain through intranasal route, thereby inducing anti-anxiety activity. Taurine's anti-anxiety action may be mediated by the strychnine-sensitive glycine receptor as evidenced by the inhibition of strychnine-induced convulsion.
This research was performed to recognize anxiety level of older people, to find out anxiety level after or before regular exercises, and to find out how much anxiety level could be lowered by the sports activities. This research selected a population among the students who enrolled at sport activity classes (e, g., physical exercises, gate ball, volume dance) at L, S, J, Y (a), Y (b), D older people college located in Seoul and Gyoenggi area. 200 of the population were chosen as candidates by convenience sampling, nonprobability sampling. Considering the age of the candidates, total 200 cases were collected by using two methods (survey and interview) simultaneously. The data assessment was made by SPSS 12.0 Version. Error tolerance in statistics is .05. The data was analyzed by using frequency analysis, paired t-test and independent t-test. After analyzing anxiety awareness level after and before regular exercises, anxiety of older people are classified by four factors. First, anxiety for loss is 3.756 (M=3.756) before exercises, while 1.942 (M=1.942) after exercises. Second, fear for aging is 3.443 before exercises and 2.243 after exercises. Third, anxiety for physical appearance is 3.253 before exercises and 2.310 after exercises. Finally, anxiety caused by psychological insecurity is 3.060 before exercises, while 1.666 after exercises. Error of tolerance for all factors falls within .001. Anxiety score after exercises is lower than that of before exercises for every factor as well. As a result, regular physical exercises appeared to reduce anxiety level of older people.
The purpose of this study was to explore effects of acceptance-commitment therapy on assertiveness and interpersonal anxiety of university students with interpersonal anxiety. Twelve students are selected of three hundred thirty students who completed an assertiveness sacle and a social anxiety scale, and finally six students were assigned to an experiment group and the others to a control group. ACT program consisting of 8 sessions twice a week approximately 120minutes is provided for experiment group, on the other hand, nothing is provided for control group. All participants completed an assertiveness sacle, a social anxiety scale at pre-test, post-test, and 6 weeks follow-up periods. In the experimental group, the assertiveness score was improved after ACT program but not in the control group. The improvement observed in the experimental group was maintained until the follow-up test. In the anxiety test, the experimental group showed a larger decrease than the control group, and the difference was also found in the follow-up test. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study, along with suggestions for future study were discussed.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the deficits in executive function in children with ADHD and anxiety disorder, and further, to characterize executive function deficits among the two groups. Methods : Subjects consisted of 60 children between the ages of 5 and 14 (16 Normal, 24 ADHD, 20 Anxiety Disorder). Neuropsychological tests (KEDI-WISC, CCTT, STROOP, WCST, ROCF) for assessing cognitive and executive function were individually administered to all subjects. Results : There were no significant differences in FSIQ or PIQ among the three groups. However, the ADHD group tended to score lower on the VIQ and subtest of similarity, vocabulary, and digit span tests. The three groups did not significantly differ with respect to CCTT test results. On the STROOP test, the ADHD group showed poor performance on the word, color, and color-word subtests. The three groups did not exhibit significant differences in WCST test results ; however, the anxiety group performed poorly belonging to below 25 percentile rank on perseverative response. On the ROCF test, the ADHD group performed poorly with respect to their organization score and in particular, regarding copy and immediate recall. The anxiety group also performed poorly with regard to organization ; however, this was limited only to immediate recall. Conclusion : Children with ADHD displayed poor inhibition and organizational abilities compared to children with anxiety and normal controls. Further, children with anxiety disorder exhibited low cognitive flexibility and voluntary problem-solving abilities compared to ADHD children and normal controls. Based on these results, we suggest that the characteristics of executive dysfunction in ADHD and anxiety disorder in children are different.
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of Therapeutic Play Program on the pre-operative anxiety of the preschoolers. The design of this study is a quasi experimental study of non-equivalent control group pre-test/post-test design. Method: The subjects of this study were the hospitalized preschoolers receiving an operation in C University Hospital. These totalled 60 and were divided into a 30-person-control-group and a 30-person-experimental-group. The data was collected from June 1 to October 5, 2002. The Experimental treatment was carried out according to Therapeutic Play Program developed by Researcher. The instruments used in this study were the observational records for Hospitalized preschooler's Anxiety behavior response, pulse rate, and respiration rate of the preschooler's. The collected data were analyzed with real numbers, percentage, t-test, and $X^2$-test, using SPSS WIN 11.0 program. Result: Hypothesis, "The experimental group provided with a Therapeutic Play Program would show a lower score of the pre-operative anxiety behavior(t=13.79, p=.00), pre-operative pulse(t=4.50, p=.00) and pre-operative respiration rate(t=4.29, p=.00) response than when the control group was not provided", was supported. Conclusion: Therapeutic Play Program is determined to be useful for reducing Pre-operative anxiety of the preschoolers.
Purpose: To determine the effects of 10 % lidocaine spray and aroma hand massage on pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and pulse during arteriovenous (AV) fistula needling in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design. Forty HD patients were assigned to either 10 % lidocaine spray group (n=21) or aroma massage group (n=19). 10 % lidocaine was sprayed 3 times around AV fistula 10 minutes before. Aroma hand massage was performed for 5 minutes with fluids containing 2 % of lavender, peppermint, and geranium concentrate mixture. Pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and pulse were measured during AV fistula needling without any intervention on the first week and during interventions on the second week. Data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, paired t-test and MANCOVA. Results: Pain and anxiety were significantly decreased in both the lidocaine spray group and aroma massage group. Aroma hand massage was more effective to reduce pulse during AV fistula needling. Conclusion: The results suggest that 10% lidocaine spray and aroma hand massage may be effective to reduce pain, anxiety, and pulse during AV fistula needling in HD patients.
Purpose: This study determined the effect of head and neck massage on anxiety, pain, and discomfort for hysterectomy patients. Methods: Subjects consisted of 48 hysterectomy patients at K hospital. Experimental group (n=23) received head and neck massage at 8 minutes per massage for five times: (at admission, before sleeping on preoperative day, at 4 hours after operation, before sleeping on operation day, before sleeping on the first postoperative day). Control group (n=25) received conventional treatment. As an effectiveness of this intervention, state of anxiety and BP was measured before sleeping on preoperative day. Pain and discomfort were measured before sleeping on the day of surgery and then on the first postoperative day. Data was analyzed descriptive statistics using $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, unpaired t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni multiple comparison. Results: 1. State of anxiety score and BP at post-treatment decreased significantly in the experimental group. 2. Pain score in experimental group was lower than that in control group, with no significant difference; whereas, 3. Discomfort level decreased significantly in the experimental group. Conclusion: Results indicate that head and neck massage could be an effective intervention for reducing preoperative anxiety and postoperative discomfort in hysterectomy patients.
Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and by far the most frequent cancer among women. Objective: This study was conducted to observe the effect of progressive relaxation exercises on anxiety and comfort level of breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A control group pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental model was applied with experimental (30) and control (30) groups, who agreed to participate in this study. Data collection was with the "Personnel Information Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and General Comfort Scale". Results: The average age of the patients that participated in the study was $49.1{\pm}7.96$ years. Eighty-three point three percent (n=25) of the patients in the experiment group and 86.7 (n=26) percent of patients in control group were married. Patient state of anxiety post-test mean scores were $36.2{\pm}8.21$ in the experimental group and $43.4{\pm}7.96$ in the control group, the difference being statistically significant (p<0.05). The general comfort scale post-test mean scores were $149.5{\pm}13.9$ in the experimental group and $137.7{\pm}15.0$ in the control group, again statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Progressive relaxation exercises positively affect patient comfort and anxiety levels in Turkey.
