  • Deformation characteristics of miniature plate tensile specimens have been studied to develop the thickness requirement and a correlation to estimate the mechanical properties of bulk material from miniature specimen data. The material used was a SA 508 C1.3 reactor pressure vessel steel and the thicknesses of miniature tensile specimens varied from ().12 m to 2 mm. The effects of thickness on the tensile deformation properties such as strength, ductility, and necking characteristics were analyzed. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were independent of specimen thickness when the thickness was larger than about 0.2 mm. The uniform and total elongations decreased as the specimen thickness decreased. It was also observed that the uniform strain component in the width direction decreased with decrease in the specimen thickness, however, that in the thickness direction was rather constant in total thickness range studied. Based on this observation and a relationship between the necking angle and the ratio between strain components, a correlation between the uniform elongations of miniature specimen and standard specimen was derived. The uniform elongations calculated by this new correlation agreed well with the measured values.

  • Filament winding process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. And it is now well established as a versatile method for storage tanks and pipe for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by split disk test fixture and dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values obtained by the rule of mixtures in composites . And the purpose of this paper is the suggestion of an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimen tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than that of a ring specimen tested by the split disk test because the stress concentration in edges of a split disk test fixture is more severe than that of dress disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.

  • The tensile properties of geogrid are affected by such factors as temperature, specimen length, gauge length, testing speed and measuring equipment. The tensile strength of geogrids can be determined by ASTM 06637 and ISO 10319. The main differences between two testing methods are testing speed and specimen length. This paper presents the results of the wide-width tensile tests for three geogrids according to different specimen length and tension speed.

  • In the nano/micro scale, material properties are dependent on the size-scale of a structure. However, conventional micro-scale tensile tests have limitations to obtain reliable values of nano-scale material properties owing to residual stress and elastic slippage in the gripping/aligning process. The indenter-driven nano-scale tensile test provides prominent advantages simple testing device, high-quality nano-scale metallic specimen with negligible residual stress. In this paper, two-types of specimens (a specimen with multi-testing parts and a specimen with a single-testing part) are discussed. Focused ion beam (FIB) is employed to fabricate a nano-scale specimen from a thin nickel film. Using the specimen with a single-testing part, we obtained a nano-scale stress-strain curve of electroplated nickel film.

  • Mechanical property evaluation of micrometer-sized structures is necessary to help design reliable microelectromechanical systems(MEMS) devices. Most material properties are known to exhibit dependence on specimen size and such properties of microscale structures are not well characterized. This paper describes techniques developed for tensile testing of materials used in MEMS. Epi-polycrystalline silicon is currently the most widely used material, and its tensile strength has been measured as 1.52GPa. We have developed an uniaxial testing machine for testing microscale specimen using electro-magnetic actuator. The field magnet and the moving coil taken from an audio-speaker were utilized as the components of the actuator. Structure of specimen was designed and manufactured for easy handling and alignment. In addition to the static tensile tests, new techniques and procedures for measuring strength are described.

  • In this study, design and manufacturing of plastic injection mold with cavity pressure/temperature sensors were performed fur tensile test specimen. International standard system for plastic tensile specimen was applied to design an injection molding system. Cavity pressure and temperature sensors were placed on the side of fixed platen of the injection mold to prevent them from external impact damage. Injection molding experiments with variations of injection speed and melt temperature were performed and then tensile test of the manufactured polycarbonate specimens was also performed. It was shown that injection molding processing parameters can have effect on the mechanical properties of the plastic injection molded part.

  • This paper is concerned with manufacturing technology of thin foil tensile specimen using CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) and measurement of precision mechanical properties using micro tensile testing. We can get a burr free micro metallic thin foil specimen using this technology. For testing mechanical property of this micro thin foil, we use a nano scale material testing machine that was developed by KITECH. In this paper, micro tensile specimens of nickel and copper thin foil are fabricated with CIP and precision mechanical properties of these materials could be measured. We will expect precision mechanical property of micro/nano material and component.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the Double Punch test method which is an indirect testing method of tensile strength of concrete, and to compare with the tensile strength of concrete as determined by the split-cylinder test, a practical method for performing the Double Punch test to obtain the tensile strength of concrete is proposed and recommended for general use. In this study, the dimensions of cylindrical specimens used in the Double-Punch test were 15X30cm, 15X15cm, 10${\times}$(20cm, and 5${\times}$l0cm, and in the split-cylinder test were 15${\times}$(30cm, 15${\times}$(15cm, and 10${\times}$(20cm. And the diameters of loading punches used in the Double-Punch test were 1.5cm, 2.5cm, and 3.5 cm. The results obtained from tests are summarized as follows ; 1. In the split-cylinder test, the tensile strength of concrete by the linear elasticity theory is similar to that of plasticity theory. 2. Both split-cylinder test and Double-Punch test, tensile strength of concrete is increased with decreasing specimen size. This tendency is identical when the ratio of specimen diameter to height is 1: 2, but that tendency is quite different when the ratio is 1: 3. In the Double-Punch test, if specimen size is constant, by increasing the punch size, tensile strength of concrete is increased, too. 4. Using a 15 ${\times}$( 15 cm cylinder specimen and 3.5 cm diameter punch in the Double Punch test would give the most uniform and consistent result in tensile strength, and the result showed a gQod correlation with splitting tensile strength from 15 x 30cm specimen. 5. In order to obtain satisfactory results and to nuninuze variability, it is proposed that specimens of 15 cm in diameter and 15 cm in height with two 3.5 cm diameter punches should be used. It seems, therefore, reasonable tt) take f't=0.0024 P(kg / cm$^2$) as a working formula for computing the tensile strength in the Double Punch test for concrete.
