  • In this study, residual stresses of the weldment were calculated by finite element analysis(FEA) and experiment. And, the crack closure behaviour and fatigue crack growth characteristics in field of residual stress of A106 Gr B steel pipe weldment were investigated under various stress ratio. Obtained results are as follows. I) $K_{op}$ was independent of $K_{max}$, and load ratio in fatigue crack growth. 2) In variation of load ratio, the scatter band of crack growth curve was reduced by half considering crack closure. and 3) Neglecting crack closure behaviour, actual fatigue crack growth rate can be underestimated' and Actual fatigue crack growth rate can be overestimated by $K_{res}$, in tensile residual stress field.

Butt 용접부에서 잔류응력이 피로균열성장거동에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험적 연구 1

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior. For this purpose, submerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and post weld heta treatment (PWHT) was followed. Residual stress distribution on the weld plate was determined by a hole drilling method and a series of .DELTA.P-const. and .DELTA.K-decreasing fatigue test were performed on the three different regions, i.e. weld metal, HAZ and base metla. Following conclusins were achieved. 1. In "as welded" specimens, tensile residual stresses were produced in the center portion of the specimen while compressive residual stresses were produced near the edges. In PWHT specimens, however, most of the residual stresses were disappeared. 2. The fatigue crack growth behavior in low .DELTA.K region was considerably affected by the presence of residual stress in both "as welded" and PWHT specimens. 3. Because of the relaxation of residual stresses in PWHT condition, the values of m increased from 2.62-2.78 (in the "as welded" condition) to 3.57-3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)condition)

  • This study analyzes the residual stress of AISI 1536V for an engine shaft of the shipbuilding industry and AISI A387 for a reactor shell of the chemical refining industry by the hole drilling method with a strain gauge rosette, which transforms fine mechanical changes into electrical signals. Tensile residual stress is generated in the forging and heat treatment process because specimens are affected by thermal stress and metal transformation stress. In the heat treatment process, the residual stress of AISI A387 is almost 170% the yield strength at 402 MPa. Since during the machining process, variable physical loads are applied to the material, compressive residual stress is generated. Under the same condition, the mechanical properties greatly affect the residual stress during the machining process. After the stress-relieving heat treatment process, the residual stress of AISI A387 is reduced below the yield strength at 182 MPa. Therefore, it is necessary to control the temperature, avoid rapid heat change, and select machining conditions depending on the mechanical properties of materials during manufacturing processes. In addition, to sufficiently reduce the residual stress, it is necessary to study the optimum condition of the stress-relieving heat treatment process for each material.

이종금속용접부 예방정비 방법에 따른 잔류응력 분포 고찰 (Investigation on the Effects of Preventive Maintenance Schemes for Dissimilar Metal Welds on the Residual Stress Distribution)

  • This paper presents the effects of preventive maintenance schemes on the residual stress distributions in dissimilar metal welds. Dissimilar metal weld is known susceptible to PWSCC and thus, effective maintenance schemes to prevent PWSCC are needed. Three preventive maintenances schemes, i.e. weld overlay, MSIP and inlay weld which are widely used in nuclear power plants, are selected and their effects on welding residual stresses are investigated via finite element analyses. As results, weld overlay and MSIP were proved effective method to mitigate residual stresses and inlay weld, on the other hand, produces strong tensile residual stresses in the inner surface. Although Alloy 690 known to be resistant to PWSCC are used in inlay weld, continuous careful observation are needed since tensile welding residual stresses are key parameter for PWSCC.

  • Welding structures are designed to endure its expected life. The most important factors are life. Especially on welded structure, fatigue strength is critical. So this study performed a research on Box and T shape weldment specimen to examine the influence of welding type. In this experiment, the results indicate Box shape was available in more than T shape. Fatigue tests were performed to evaluate the fatigue strength of the both as-welded and statically pre-loaded specimens by 3 point bending load. Fatigue life can be improved by using Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) effect. Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) is excellent for eliminating the tensile residual stresses and generating compressive residual stresses which elevate fatigue strength of welded structures. Also, this shows that welding part has better fatigue life and welding was performed well. In this study, to evaluate the Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) effect, for welding structure, the experiment was conducted at various levels of stress range between 100MPa and 500MPa. From the test results, it was indicated that fatigue performance was improving by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT)

Anisotropy in Gum and Black Filled SBR and NR Vulcanizates Due to Large Deformation

  • After imposing a large pre-strain, anisotropy increases with increasing residual extension ratio. Gums have very low residual extension ratio and exhibit little anisotropy, while black filled SBR and especially sulfur-cured carbon black filled NR have large set and anisotropy. For carbon black filled rubber, samples subjected to tensile loading in perpendicular to the pre-strain direction have the same stress-strain curves shape as the sample without pre-strain (=isotropic samples), but slightly lower modulus. However, compared to isotropic or perpendicular directional samples to pre-strain direction, samples subjected to tensile loading in parallel to the pre-strain direction show low stress at low deformation, but have high stiffness at high deformation. Normalized anisotropy changes with strain. The normalized anisotropy for various deformations is a linear function of residual extension ratio.

  • An application of the instrumented indentation technique has been expanded from the measurements of hardness and elastic modulus to the analysis of residual stress. A slope of the indentation loading curve increases (or decreases) according to compressive (or tensile) residual stress. A theoretical equation has been established for quantifying residual stress from the slope change. However, a precise observation of the remnant indents is indispensible because the theoretical approach needs actual contact information. In addition, the conventional hardness test is still used for predicting the residual stress distribution of welded joints. Thus, we observed the three-dimensional morphologies of the remnant indents formed on artificial stress states and analyzed stress effects on morphological recovery of the indents. First, a depth recovery ratio, which has been regarded as a sensitive stress indicator, did not show a clear dependency with the residual stress. Thus an analysis on volumetric recovery was tried in this study and yielded a inverse proportional behavior with the residual stress. In addition, an elastic to plastic volume recovery ratio showed more significant correlation with the residual stress.

  • 금속복합재료에서는 강화재와 기지재 사이의 열팽창계수 차이에 의해 복합재료 내부에 잔류응력이 남아있어 복합재료 전체의 강도저하를 가져온다. 본 연구에서는 TiNi 형상기억합금을 강화재료로써 이러한 잔류응력 문제를 해결하기 위하여 이용하였다. TiNi 형상기억합금은 형상기억효과를 이용하여 복합재료의 잔류응력문제를 해결할 뿐만 아니라 복합재료의 인장강도를 증가시키는 역할을 한다. 핫프레스 방법에 의해 제작된 형상기억복합재료의 강도증가를 위하여 냉간압연을 실시하여 실험을 실시하였다. 이와 같이 제작된 형상기억복합재료의 저온에서의 미시적 손상거동을 평가하기 위하여 음향방출기법을 이용하였다. 또한 열충격을 받은 시험편의 손상에 대한 연구도 이루어졌다.

Local compression에 의한 CTOD 시편내의 용접잔류응력 재분포 (Redistributions of Welding Residual Stress for CTOD Specimen by Local Compression)

  • When conducting CTOD test, especially in thick welded steel plate, fatigue pre-cracking occasionally failed to satisfy the requirements of standards thus making the test result invalid. Internally accumulated residual stress of test piece has been thought as one of the main reasons. The propagation of fatigue crack, started from the tip of machined notch, which might have propagated irregularly due to residual stress field. To overcome this kind of difficulty three methods to modify the residual stress are suggested in standard i.e. local compression, reverse bending and stepwise high-R ratio method. In this paper not only multi pass welding but also local pre-compressing process of thick steel plate has been simulated using finite element method for clarifying variation of internal welding residual stress. The simulated results show that welding residual stress is compressive in the middle section of the model and it is predominantly increased after machining the specimen. Comparing as-welded state all component of the welding residual stress changing to compressive in the tip of machine notch whereas residual stress of the outer area remain as tensile condition relatively. Analysis results also show that this irregular residual stress distribution is improved to be more uniformly by applying local compression.

TiNi/A16061 형상기억복합재료의 고온에서의 손상거동에 대한 AE 특성 (AE Characteristics on the Damage Behavior of TiNi/A16061 Shape Memory Alloy Composites at High Temperature)

  • 금속복합재료 (MMC) 내부에서의 강화재와 기지재사이의 열팽창계수의 차이에 의해 발생하는 인장잔류응력은 복합재료의 인장강도를 저하시키는 심각한 문제중의 하나이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 TiNi/A16061 형상기억복합재료내부의 인장잔류응력의 문제를 해결하기 위하여 강화재로써 TiNi 합금을 사용하였다. TiNi 합금은 형상기억효과를 이용하여 복합재료내부에 압축잔류응력을 발생시킴으로써 인장강도를 증가시키는 역할을 한다. 복합재료내부에 압축잔류응력을 발생시키기 위하여 예변형(pre-strain)을 가하였다. 본 연구에서는 예변형의 변화에 따른 압축잔류응력의 영향을 평가하였으며 AE 기법을 이용하여 고온에서의 복합재료의 미시적 손상거동과 예변형의 영향을 평가하였다.
