  • Magnesium alloys have many advantages such as a low density, high strength/weight ratio and well recycle. And joining process is absolutely necessary to expand the field of application of magnesium alloy. The main problems of conventional process such as arc welding for magnesium alloy are the inflammability, a tendency toward crack formation and the appearance of porosity during solidification. Laser welding technology is a promising means for overcoming these difficulties. This study is related to the laser weldability of AZ31 magnesium alloy, an all-purpose wrought alloy with good strength and ductility. The effect of welding conditions on the weldability of butt joints was examined. Also, the mechanical properties of butt welded joints were investigated by tensile test and hardness test.

  • The effect of microstructural characteristics of A356 alloys on tensile behavior was studied ill the present study. To authors' knowledge, the microstructural effect on mechanical properties of A356 alloy has not been well understood even though this alloy system is one of the most widely used alloys for the industrial purpose. Specially, quantitative relationship between properties like ductility and fracture toughness with microstructural features is lacking. In the present study, three processing routes was used to fabricate samples with different microstructures like size and distribution of primary alpha and eutectic phases. Also, compressive deformation was used to close casting porosity for the cast samples. Tensile behavior was examine and discussed in terms of microstructural aspects.

  • The mechanical properties and fracture toughness of permanent mold cast austempered gray cast iron(AGI) were compared to those of sand cast AGI. The iron was melted to eutectic composition in order to get better castability especially in permanent mold casting. Specimens prepared for tensile, impact and fracture toughness test were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempered at $270^{\circ}C$ and $370^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The strength, impact and fracture toughness of permanent mold cast AGI were found to be superior to those of sand cast AGI. The maximum value of 836 MPA in tensile strength, was obtained at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. But ductility of AGI was not improved by permanent mold casting.

  • Production and properties of metal matrix composites reinforced with an in-situ high aspect ratio $AlB_2$ flake have been investigated. Boron 2.2wt.% was dissolved in pure Al and Al-Cu alloy at $1300^{\circ}C$ by adding directly boron oxide which resulted in 4 vol.% reinforcing phase. The in-situ $AlB_2$ flake concentration was increased up to 30 vol.% in order to increase the tensile strength of the composites. Hardness, compressive strength and tensile strength of the composite were measured and compared with their matrix. Results showed that 30 vol.% $AlB_2/Al$ composite show a 193% increase in the compressive strength and a 322% increase in compressive yield strength. Results also showed that ductility of composites decreases with adding $AlB_2$ reinforcements.

  • This paper investigates the performances of GFRP bar and its possibility for using a substitute of steel bar. GFRO bar was made with introducing the glass fiber into GTR added UPE. We carried out the tensile test of GFRP and steel bar and out the three point bend test bond-test and fracture energy measurement on the GFRP bar and steel bar reinforced concrete. The GFRP bar was excellent as comparison with steel bar in the contribution to the energy absorption and the ductility of concrete. But its tensile, bond and bend strengthes were comparatively small. In order to improve these defects, we judged that glass fibers in GFRP bar must be completely adhesive one another by the impregnating glass fibers into UPE.

  • One of the most important characteristics of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) is its strain hardening behavior up to $5\∼6\%$of stain under a tensile loading. So, the ductile behavior of ECC should be utilized in applications to maximize the performance of structures. Thus, in this study, the ductile behavior of ECC as a repair material applied to the tensile region under flexural loads is numerically examined using a developed numerical model. Several strain capacities of ECC are examined to predict the behavior of ECC strengthened flexural structures. The results show that a certain optimal level of ductility in ECCs for repair applications exists and it is an important factor to consider when using ECC as a repairing material.

  • Recently, a growing attention is paid to development of new construction materials. The fiber reinforced Concrete is recognized as one of the most promising new construction materials. A comprehensive experimental study was conducted to explore the mechanical behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The major variables in the experiment were the fiber contents and the lengths of steel fibers. The flexural, tensile, and compressive behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete were investigated. The present study shows that the strength and ductility are remarkably increased with the increase of fiber content. The rate of strength increase due to steel fibers was found to be the highest in tension, the middle in flexure and the lowest in compression. This indicates that the steel fibers play a major role in increasing the tensile capacity.

  • This paper aimed at the development of hydrophilic carbon fiber with improved tensile strength and ductility, numerous single fiber pullout tests from different cement matrices were performed. Fiber debonding and pullout have a large influence on the tensile stress - crack opening behavior of fiber concrete. Both debonding and pullout depend on the quality of the matrix, as well as on the embedded length of the carbon fiber. In this paper, all fiber pullout tests were carried out using high strength carbon fibers, both without fluorinationed and with fluorinationed carbon fiber.

  • Cryogenic characteristics of austenitic stainless steel based on 304 steel with nickel and nitrogen were investigated at room temperature and $-196^{\circ}C$. The alloys were fabricated by vacuum arc furnace and cold working after homogenization treatment. The addition of nickel and nitrogen decreased the stability of $\delta$-ferrite and induced the stability against the formation of martensite to result significantly in enhancing ductility at $-196^{\circ}C$. Nitrogen reduced Md temperature, which was beneficial to the tensile strength and elongation at $25^{\circ}C$ and -196$^{\circ}C$.

  • The mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rate fracture toughness of permanent mould cast austempered gray cast iron(AGI) were compared to those of sand cast AGI. Specimens prepared for tensile, impact and fatigue test were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempered at $270^{\circ}C$, $320^{\circ}C$, $370^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The strength, impact and fatigue crack propagation behavior of permanent mold cast AGI were found to be superior to those of sand cast AGI. Maximum values in tensile strength, BHN, Charpy impact energy, were obtained at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. Samely, the slowest fatigue crack growth rate was appeared at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. But ductility of AGI was not improved by permanent mould casting.
