Recently just as in the automobile industry, shipbuilders also try to reduce material consumption and weight in order to keep operating costs as low as possible and improve the speed of production. Naturally industry is ever searching for welding techniques offering higher power, higher productivity and a better quality. Therefore it is important to have a details research based on the various welding process applied to steel and other materials, and to have the ability both to counsel interested companies and to evaluate the feasibility of implementation of this process. Submerged-arc welding (SAW) process is usually used about 20% of shipbuilding. Similar to gas metal arc welding(GMAW), SAW involves formation of an arc between a continuously-fed bare wire electrode and the work-piece. The process uses a flux to generate protective gases and slag, and to add alloying elements to the weld pool and a shielding gas is not required. Prior to welding, a thin layer of flux powder is placed on the work-piece surface. The arc moves along the joint line and as it does so, excess flux is recycled via a hopper. Remaining fused slag layers can be easily removed after welding. As the arc is completely covered by the flux layer, heat loss is extremely low. This produces a thermal efficiency as high as 60% (compared with 25% for manual metal arc). SAW process offers many advantages compared to conventional CO2 welding process. The main advantages of SAW are higher welding speed, facility of workers, less deformation and better than bead shape & strength of welded joint because there is no visible arc light, welding is spatter-free, fully-mechanized or automatic process, high travel speed, and depth of penetration and chemical composition of the deposited weld metal. However it is difficult to application of thin plate according to high heat input. So this paper has been focused on application of the field according to SAW process for thin plate in ship-structures. For this purpose, It has been decided to optimized welding condition by experiments, relationship between welding parameters and bead shapes, mechanical test such as tensile and bending. Also finite element(FE) based numerical comparison of thermal history and welding residual stress in A-grade 3.2 thickness steel of SAW been made in this study. From the result of this study, It makes substantial saving of time and manufacturing cost and raises the quality of product.
In order to replace existing slit type steel plate on the wooden structure joint, the FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced. Four types of FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced according to the type of reinforcement and adhesive, and before applying to the joint, the adhesion performance test according to KSF 3021 and KSF 2160 and the Compact Tension (CT) type fracture toughness test specified in ASTM D5045-99 were carried out. As a result of adhesion performance test, all GFRP textile, GFRP sheet, and GFRP Textile-Sheet type FRP-reinforced laminated plates satisfied the requirement of soaking delamination percentage with smaller than 5% based on KS standard. However, aramid type specimen satisfied the standard as the soaking delamination percentage of 4.8% but it did not satisfied the standard as the water proof soaking delamination percentage of 70%. As a result of fracture toughness test, the volume ratio of reinforcement to timber became 23% so that the strength of FRP-reinforced laminated plates increased by two to four times in comparison to the control specimen. It was confirmed that the GFRP Textile-Sheet type specimen was most resistant to the fracture most since the ratio of stress intensity factor compared with that of the control increased to 61% owing to the parallel arrangement of glass fiber to the load. As a result of tensile shear strength test using FRP-reinforced laminated plates and nonmetal dowels, it is about 12% lower than metal connectors.

In this paper, wetting and interfacial reaction properties for low Ag containing Sn-Ag-Cu Pb-free solder alloy, i.e., Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu were investigated and compared with those of Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu. Melting behavior and stress-strain curves of some Sn-xAg-xCu alloys were also measured using a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and a tensile test machine, respectively. In order to enhance insufficient wetting properties of Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu alloy, the improvement of wetting properties were analyzed by applying fluxes containing higher content of halide or indium adding of 0.2wt.% into the solder alloy. It was concluded that the small addition of indium is more effective for the improvement of wettability in low temperature range of $230{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ than applying flux containing higher content of halide.

The failure strength of composite single-lap joint repaired using scarf patch was investigated by test and finite element method. A total of 45 specimens were tested changing scarf ratio, stacking pattern, and defect size to study the failure strength and mode. Except for one case, all repaired specimens showed the equal or higher strength than the sound specimens and the effect of considered repair parameters was not remarkable. It was found through the failure mode inspection that the surface treatment for bonding was not enough in the case which failed at the lower load than the sound specimen. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to verify the test results. It was confirmed that the considered repair parameters do not significantly affect the stress distribution of the specimens. It was also observed that the applied tensile load is relieved passing through the overlapped region thickness of which is almost double. From this study, it is concluded that if the bonding procedure for adherends and patch including surface treatment for fabric layer is thoroughly followed, the strength of repaired single-lap joint can be restored up to the strength of sound one.
The tilting pad journal bearing for the turbo compressor application has a role to support high speed and heavy loading rotor. White metal has been widely used for the bearing material but the conventional bearing is immediately suspended and induces serious serious damage to the rotor under the unexpected oil cut situation or the insufficient oil film formation. The carbon fiber reinforced composite having high specific stiffness, specific strength and excellent tribological characteristics can solve these seizure problems. In this work, the study on the durability of high thermal resistance carbon fiber/epoxy composite tilting pad journal bearing under oil cut situation was conducted. The material properties of the composite materials including tensile, compressive and interlaminar properties were measured at room and high temperature of oil cut situation. To investigate the possibility of failure of composite tilting pad journal bearing under oil cut situation, the stress distribution of the composite bearing was analyzed via finite element analysis and the Tsai-Wu Failure index was calculated. To verify the failure analysis results, the oil cut tests for the composite tilting pad journal bearing were conducted using industrial test bench.

In this work, we investigated the theoretical forming limit models for Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo used for spacer grid of nuclear fuel rods. Tensile and anisotropy tests were performed to obtain stress-strain curves and anisotropic coefficients. The experimental forming limit diagrams (FLD) for two materials were obtained by dome stretching tests following NUMISHEET 96. Theoretical FLD depends on FL models and yield criteria. To obtain the right hand side (RHS) of FLD, we applied the FL models (Swift's diffuse necking, M-K theory, S-R vertex theory) to Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo sheets. Hill's local necking theory was adopted for the left hand side (LHS) of FLD. To consider the anisotropy of sheets, the yield criteria of Hill and Hosford were applied. Comparing the predicted curves with the experimental data, we found that the RHS of FLD for Zircaloy-4 can be described by the Swift model (with the Hill's criterion), while the LHS of the FLD can be explained by Hill model. The FLD for Zirlo can be explained by the S-R model and the Hosford's criterion (a = 8).

This study examined the behavior of the ground by comparing the methods using the results of the Terzaghi formula and the ground investigation data and method considering the dilatancy effect for a circular tunnel using the finite element method. In the case of the Terzaghi formula, the tunnel load can be overestimated and cause overdesign. The method using the results of the ground investigation data cannot be applied when a reasonable coefficient of earth pressure is not determined. This is because it behaves completely differently from the actual behavior, and unexpected problems can occur. In the case of the method considering the dilatancy effect, however, both the strength enhancement effect can be considered through the dilatancy angle and relative density. Therefore, the tunnel load was calculated most reasonably using the method considering dilatancy. Finite element analysis using the geotechnical survey results showed that the tensile stress acts at the top of the tunnel when the upper soil of the tunnel is shallow. On the other hand, additional verification is necessary, such as a comparison with the field measurement results. Through additional research, if normalized, the tunnel load can be calculated reasonably at the time of tunnel design, and safe and economical design is possible.

It is known that the best way to recycle fly ash is to use in concrete. It is impossible to bury in the ground this fly ash recently, so it is trying to use high volume fly ash concrete. Nevertheless, recent main research topics are focused in the part of material only. However, it is necessary to perform the researches about elasticity modulus, stress-strain relationship and structural behavior. Therefore, in this paper, 18 test members were manufactured with 3 test variables, namely fly ash replacement ratio 0, 35, 50%, concrete compressive strength 20, 40, 60MPa and 2 tensile steel ratio. 18 test members were tested for flexural behavior. From the test results, there were no differences between 35, 50% high volume fly ash cement concrete and ordinary concrete without fly ash (FA=0%). In order to evaluate the HVFAC flexural behavior, Analytical model was proposed and the computer program was developed. There were no differences between test results and analysis results. So, the proposed analytical model was reasonable.

Steel pipe piles have been used as various deep foundation materials for a long time. Recent increase in steel material cost has made engineers reluctant in using it even with its good quality and ease of construction. Therefore when constructing with steel pipe pile, the decision to reuse the excessive pile length that is cut off from the designed pile head elevation after pile driving can be cost saving. This has caused many constructors to reuse the pile leftovers with new piles, but the absence of quantitative structural capacity behaviors of steel pipe pile after pile driving or appropriate countermeasures and standards in reusing steel pipe pile has resulted in wrong applications, pile structural integrity problems, inappropriate limitation of reusable pile length, etc. The structural performance analysis between a new pile and a pile that has undergone working state and ultimate state stress level during pile driving was performed in this research by means of comparing the results between the dynamic pile load test, tensile load test, charpy energy test and fatigue test for high strength steel of $440N/mm^2$ yield strength. Test results show that under working load conditions the yield strength variation is less than 2% and for ultimate load conditions the variation is less than 5% for maximum total blow count of 3000. The results have been statistically analyzed to check the sensitivity of each factors involved. From the test results, reusability of steel pipe pile lies not in the main pipe yield strength deviation but in the reduction of absorb energy, strength changes and quality control at the welded section, shape deformation and local buckling during pile driving.

Recently, the use of duplex stainless steel which with a two-phase microstructure (equal mixture of ferrite and austenite) has been increased in a variety of industrial fields due to higher strength leading to weight saving, greater corrosion resistance(particularly, stress corrosion cracking) and lower price. However, currently, stainless steels are not included in the structural materials of Korean Building Code and corresponding design standards are not specified. In this paper, experimental studies have been performed to investigate the structural behaviors of duplex stainless steel (STS329FLD) bolted connection with two bolts for providing the design data. Main variables are shear connection type (single shear and double shear) and end distance parallel to the direction of applied force. Fracture modes at the final step of test were classified into typical block shear fracture, tensile fracture and curling. Curling occurrence in single shear connection led to ultimate strength drop by up to 20%. Test strengths were compared with those by current design specifications such as AISC/AISI/KBC, EC3 and AIJ and proposed equations by existing studies. For specimens with no curling, Clement & Teh's equation considering the active shear plane provided a higher strength estimation accurancy and for specimens with curling, Kim & Lim's equation considering strength reduction by curling was also overly unconservative to predict the ultimate strength of curled connections.
