This study examines attributes and expression characteristics of 'Mix & Match' which is one of the major current trends in interior designs. The concept and background of 'Mix & Match' was ascertained through research of previous documents and studies, and its attributes were explored. In order to examine the expression characteristics to see how they are expressed in actual interior designs, case analyses were carried out centering on the expression elements such as material, light & lighting, color, furniture and objects which were regarded as important in previous studies and related articles so far. The case analyses were carried out for works where the concept of 'Mix & Match' was prominent in designs produced in 2007 and 2008, chosen from the main reports of the representative interior design journals, 'Interiors' and 'INTERNI & Decor'. As a result, it has been found that 'Mix & Match' is not limited to one attribute but the temporal, spatial and genre attributes are present all at the same time, or various expression elements exist in one attribute. This is a distinct character commonly shown in most of the cases and each expression element is expressed in variety according to spatial concept, from a simple parallel to substitution, transfer and modification (simplification, transformation of the scale, rate modification etc.) Therefore, in creating the space for 'Mix & Match' or in interpretation of it, the understanding of these expression characteristics would make it possible for clearer and more various applications of design, and furthermore will be meaningful for supply and accumulation of reference in design communication.
An understanding of temporal trends of stream flows can help in the river management and the water resources planning for natural circumstances and human communities. Changes in temperature, precipitation, flow, and land use (agriculture, flood prevention activities, reservoir operation, interbasin diversion, etc.) are all eventually reflected in the flow pattern of the river. An assumption that the stationarity of the hydrologic series implying time-invariant characteristics of the time series accepted in water structure designs can no longer be valid if the flow changes as a result of the climate change or the stream flow use. Therefore, the identification and description of the characteristics of changes in hydrologic time series is a very important task in the river basin management. In this study, the statistical tests on the flow change forced by excess water diversions in the Sumjin River basin were performed by ways of single variable and time series variable comparisons. The tests showed that currently the Sumjin River basin statistically keeps its homogeneity in annual streamflow series, but the changed situation has been appeared in dry season streamflow series.

Early researches in human action recognition have focused on tracking and classifying articulated body motions. Such methods required accurate segmentation of body parts, which is a sticky task, particularly under realistic imaging conditions. Recent trends of work have become popular towards the use of more and low-level appearance features such as spatio-temporal interest points. Given the great progress in pose estimation over the past few years, redefined views about pose-based approach are needed. This paper addresses the issues of whether it is sufficient to train a classifier only on low-level appearance features in appearance approach and proposes effective pose-based approach with pose estimation for emotional action recognition. In order for these questions to be solved, we compare the performance of pose-based, appearance-based and its combination-based features respectively with respect to scenario of various emotional action recognition. The experiment results show that pose-based features outperform low-level appearance-based approach of features, even when heavily spoiled by noise, suggesting that pose-based approach with pose estimation is beneficial for the emotional action recognition.
This study was carried out to obtain the basic model to estimate damage degree from the correlation analysis between forest fire and site environment factors and to clarify the restoration trends thorough multi-temporal survey by observing species diversity followed by various treatments at damaged forest area over time. From the derived model, the damage degree of forest fire was higher in the area of dense coniferous stands composed of simple story at the elevation of about 100m and 200m, and on steeper slope area over 30 degree. As results of this study, fire damaged trees are needed to cut down and a mixed stand with deciduous and coniferous species from the same area is desirable for the future species composition on fire damaged forest. Thus, site characteristics, local species, and mixed stands are the main consideration to enhance the vegetation recovery.
Long-term coastal topographical data is critical for analyzing temporal and spatial changes in shorelines. Especially understanding the change trends is essential for future coastal management. For this research, in the data preparation, we obtained digital aerial images, terrestrial laser scanning data and UAV images in the year of 2009. 2018 and 2019 respectively. Also tidal observation data obtained by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency were used for Bangamoeri beach located in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. In the process of it, we applied the photogrammetric technique to extract the coastline of 4.40 m from the stereo images of 2009 by stereoscopic viewing. In 2018, digital elevation model was generated by using the raw data obtained from the laser scanner and the corresponding shoreline was semi-automatically extracted. In 2019, a digital elevation model was generated from the drone images to extract the coastline. Finally the change rate of shorelines was calculated using Digital Shoreline Analysis System. Also qualitative analysis was presented.
Background: Temperature-driven variation in pollinator assemblage and activity are important information, especially at high altitudes, where rising temperature trends exceed global levels. Temporal patterns of pollinators in a flowering season can be used as a proxy to predict the changes of high-altitude plants' mutualistic relationships. We observed a spring temperature change in one population of a high-altitude endemic species, Megaleranthis saniculifolia on Mt. Sobaeksan, and related it to pollinator assemblage and activity changes. Methods: This study was conducted at two sites, each facing different slopes (NE and NW), for two times in the spring of 2013 (early-flowering, April 27-28, vs. mid-flowering, May 7-8, 2013). We confirmed that the two sites were comparable in snowmelt regime, composition of flowering plants, and flower density, which could affect pollinator assemblage and activity. Pollinator assemblage and activity were investigated at three quadrats ($1m^2$ with 5-m distance) for each site, covering a total of 840 min observation for each site. We analyzed correlations between the temperature and visitation frequency. Results: Twelve pollinator species belonging to four orders were observed for M. saniculifolia at both sites during early- and mid-flowering times. Diptera (five species) and hymenopteran species (four species) were the most abundant pollinators. Pollinator richness increased at both sites toward the mid-flowering time [early vs. mid = 7 (NE) and 3 (NW) vs. 9 (NE) and 5 (NW)]. Compared to the early-flowering time, visitation frequency showed a fourfold increase in the mid-flowering time. With the progression of spring, major pollinators changed from flies to bees. Upon using data pooled over both sites and flowering times, hourly visitation frequency was strongly positively correlated with hourly mean air temperature. Conclusions: The spring temperature change over a relatively brief flowering period of M. saniculifolia at high altitudes can alter pollinator assemblages through pollinator dominance and visitation frequency changes. Thus, this study emphasizes information on intra- and inter-annual variations in the mutualistic relationship between pollinators and M. saniculifolia to further assess the warming impacts on M. saniculifolia's reproductive fitness.
Sea gulls are high trophic level consumers in the coastal environment, and thus, which have been widely used to monitor contamination biomagnified through a food web. However, such monitoring studies using sea gulls have been rare in the Korean literature. The National Environmental Specimen Bank chose eggs of a black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) to serve as an environmental specimen for the long-term monitoring of the coastal ecosystem affected by terrestrial pollutants. Black-tailed gull eggs were collected from Baengnyeongdo, Hongdo and Uleungdo, and their DDTs and total mercury content were determined. The highest concentration of ${\Sigma}DDTs$ was $231.6{\pm}106.1{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Baengnyeongdo, followed by $230.0{\pm}123.8{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Ulleungdo, and $117.7{\pm}18.3{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Hongdo. In addition, total mercury was detected at $414.5{\pm}97.6{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Ulleungdo, $363.9{\pm}123.6{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Hongdo, and $237.5{\pm}42.3{\mu}g/kg$ wet in Baengnyeongdo. Relatively high concentrations of the target pollutants were recorded in specimens from Ulleungdo. Additional comprehensive and prolonged studies are required to elucidate spatial and temporal patterns of contamination in black-tailed gull eggs with regard to monitoring contaminant trends in eggs and prey.
Accurate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (RET) is important to quantify crop evapotranspiration for sustainable water resource management in hydrological, agricultural, and environmental fields. It is estimated by different methods from direct measurements with lysimeters, or by many empirical equations suggested by numerous modeling using local climatic variables. The potential to use some such equations depends on the availability of the necessary meteorological parameters for calculating the RET in specific climatic conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the proper RET equations using limited climatic data and to analyze the temporal and spatial trends of the RET in South Korea. We evaluated the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation (FAO-56 PM) by comparing several simple RET equations and observed small fan evaporation. In this study, the modified Penman equation, Hargreaves equation, and FAO Penman-Monteith equation with missing solar radiation (PM-Rs) data were tested to estimate the RET. Nine weather stations were considered with limited climatic data across South Korea from 1973 - 2017, and the RET equations were calculated for each weather station as well as the analysis of the mean error (ME), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The FAO-56 PM recommended by the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) showed good performance even though missing solar radiation, relative humidity, and wind speed data and could still be adapted to the limited data conditions. As a result, the RET was increased, and the evapotranspiration rate was increased more in coastal areas than inland.
The Wintering Waterbird Census of Korea was started in 1999 and monitors 200 major migratory sites in South Korea. Waterfowl counts have been undertaken for more than 20 years since; however, a limited number of studies have analyzed the temporal patterns of waterfowl population. In this study, we analyzed population size changes of wintering whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus) at 112 monitoring sites from 2001 to 2018. The average number of whooper swans was $4,296{\pm}42.66$ and there was a trend for an increase in population size across the survey period. We found that the population in the Nakdong River Estuary, one of the major wintering sites over 18 years (26.22% of the national population), had rapidly decreased (-0.77% per year). Conversely, the whooper swan population in the Junam Reservoir and Sihwa Lake increased (+1.64%, +0.54% per year, respectively). Estuaries showed the highest dominance of whooper swans among the five different habitat types, accounting for 32.13% of the population. Reservoir/lakes had 30.60% of the total population and reclaimed lakes(18.24%), river (13.11%), and coast (5.93%) followed. The annual distribution of the whooper swan population in South Korea has been affected by various habitat conditions resulting from human activities and urbanization. To better understand the complex factors that can cause rapid changes in wintering waterfowl populations, it is necessary to integrate the data from the bird census program with environmental conditions to conduct in-depth pattern analyses over longer time periods.

Remote sensing products have long been used to monitor and forecast natural disasters. Satellite-derived rainfall products are becoming more accurate as space and time resolution improve, and are widely used in areas where measurement is difficult because of the periodic accumulation of images in large areas. In the case of North Korea, there is a limit to the estimation of precipitation for unmeasured areas due to the limited accessibility and quality of statistical data. CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations) is global satellite-derived rainfall data of 0.05 degree grid resolution. It has been available since 1981 from USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). This study evaluates the applicability of CHIRPS rainfall products for South Korea and North Korea by comparing CHIRPS data with ground observation data, and analyzing temporal and spatial drought trends using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a meteorological drought index available through CHIRPS. The results indicate that the data set performed well in assessing drought years (1994, 2000, 2015 and 2017). Overall, this study concludes that CHIRPS is a valuable tool for using data to estimate precipitation and drought monitoring in Korea.
