  • Present study analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of PM10 pollution in Metropolitan Daegu area based on air pollution monitoring station data and measurements of PM10 concentrations in background area in order to provide essential data for efficient PM10 pollution management. The significant variation of spatial and temporal PM10 concentrations in Daegu area was observed during the study years. The highest maximum PM10 concentration(332 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥), average concentration(88 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) and frequency exceeding PM10 daily standard(150 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) were all observed in Namsandong located near a major roadway. The hourly and weekly variations of PM10 concentrations had different pattern for the measurement sites. The monthly and seasonal concentrations exhibited a notable characteristic: the maximum concentration was obtained in spring season, most likely due to Yellow sand effects. Furthermore, this temporal variation of PM10 pollution varied with study site. Meanwhile, the PM10 values measured at the monitoring site, Manchondong, were comparable with those of a control site. The average PM10 concentration ranged from 23 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ to 115 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ with a mean value of 53 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the former site and from 22 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ to 91 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ with a mean value of 45 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the latter site.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine land use change in the fringe area of a metropolitan city through multi-temporal data analysis. Change detection has been regarded as one of the most important applications for utilization of remotely sensed imageries. Conventionally, two images were used for change detection, and Arithmetic calculators were generally used on the process. Meanwhile, multi-temporal change detection for a large number of images has been carried out. In this paper, a digital land-use map and three Landsat TM data were utilized for the multi-temporal change detection Each urban area map was extracted as a base map on the process of multi-temporal change detection. Each urban area map was converted to bit image by using boolean logic. Various urban change types could be obtained by stacking the urban area maps derived from the multi-temporal data using Geographic Information System(GIS). Urban change type map was created by using the process of piling up the bit images. Then the urban change type map was compared with each land cover map for the change detection. Dalseo-gu of Daegu city and Hwawon-eup of Dalsung-gun, the fringe area of Daegu Metropolitan city, were selected for the test area of this multi-temporal change detection method. The districts are adjacent to each other. Dalseo-gu has been developed for 30 yeais and so a large area of paddy land has been changed into a built-up area. Hwawon-eup, near by Dalseo-gu, has been influenced by the urbanization of Dalseo-gu. From 1972 to 1999, 3,507.9ha of agricultural area has been changed into other land uses, while 72.7ha of forest area has been altered. This agricultural area was designated as a 'Semi-agricultural area'by the National landuse Management Law. And it was easy for the preserved area to be changed into a built-up area once it would be included as urban area. Finally, the method of treatment and management of the preserved area needs to be changed to prevent the destruction of paddy land by urban sprawl on the urban fringe.

  • Efficient buffer management is closely related to system performance. Thus, much research has been performed on various buffer management techniques. However, many of the proposed techniques utilize the temporal locality of access patterns. In spatial database environments, there exists not only the temporal locality but also spatial locality, where the objects in the recently accessed regions will be accessed again in the near future. Thus, in this paper, we present a buffer management technique, called BEAT, which utilizes both the temporal locality and spatial locality in spatial database environments. The experimental results with real-life and synthetic data demonstrate the efficiency of BEAT.

Abstract Temporal databases manage time-evolving data. They provide built-in supports for efficient recording and querying of temporal data. Many application area such as trend analysis, version management, and medical record management have temporal aspects, and temporal databases can handle these temporal aspects efficiently. The aggregate in temporal databases, that is, temporal aggregate is an extension of conventional aggregate on the domain and range of aggregation to include time concept. The basic techniques behind computing aggregates in conventional databases are not efficient when applied to temporal databases. In this paper, we propose a new tree structure for temporal aggregation, called PA-tree, and aggregate processing method based on the PA-tree. We compare the PA-tree with the existing aggregation tree which has been proposed for temporal aggregate.

  • Many applications such as nuclear power plant monitoring, plant process control, stock market management, and network data management require a database system supporting both temporal data model and active rule processing. There have been some efforts to extend the temporal functionalities of the active database system, but an active database system based on temporal database, especially the one applied to the real application is rare. In this paper, we proposed an active temporal rule model based on bi-temporal database. And a rule language following the proposed rule model was described with its execution semantics. Then, how to apply to the nuclear power plant monitoring system was given as the examples.

  • One of the major issues of DBMS is the buffer management. Because fetching data from the database disk is costly, the number of disk I/O's must be minimized in order to improve the DBMS performance. Although there have been many buffer management strategies to minimize the disk I/O, those strategies usually focused on just the temporal locality. Since there are the spatial locality as well as the temporal locality in the spatial database, strategies using only the temporal locality cannot achieve the optimal performance in the spatial database. In this paper, we propose a new buffer management strategy, the Spatial Locality Area Measure(SLAM) strategy, that considers not only the temporal locality but also the spatial locality. The SLAM buffer management strategy consists of two core structures, the SLM-tree and the M-LRU. We show the efficiency of the proposed strategy through experiments over various buffer sizes and reference frequencies.

  • Miniaturization of computing devices, and advances in wireless communication and positioning systems will create a wide and increasing range of database applications such as location-based services, tracking and transportation systems that has to deal with Moving Objects. Various types of queries could be posted to moving objects, including past, present and future queries. The key problem is how to model the location of moving objects and enable Database Management System (DBMS) to predict the future location of a moving object. It is obvious that there is a need for an innovative, generic, conceptually clean and application-independent approach for spatio-temporal handling data. This paper presents behavioral aspect of the spatio-temporal databases for managing and querying moving objects. Our objective is to impelement and extend the Spatial TAU (STAU) system developed by Dr.Pelekis that provides spatio-temporal functionality to an Object-Relational Database Management System to support modeling and querying moving objecs. The results of the impelementation are demonstrated in this paper.

  • Moving object management is widely used in traffic, logistic and data mining applications in ubiquitous environments. It is required to analyze spatio-temporal data and trajectories for moving object management. In this paper, we proposed a novel index structure for spatio-temporal aggregation of trajectory in a constrained network, named aCN-RB-tree. It manages aggregation values of trajectories using a constraint network-based index and it also supports direction of trajectory. An aCN-RB-tree consists of an aR-tree in its center and an extended B-tree. In this structure, an aR-tree is similar to a Min/Max R-tree, which stores the child nodes' max aggregation value in the parent node. Also, the proposed index structure is based on a constrained network structure such as a FNR-tree, so that it can decrease the dead space of index nodes. Each leaf node of an aR-tree has an extended B-tree which can store timestamp-based aggregation values. As it considers the direction of trajectory, the extended B-tree has a structure with direction. So this kind of aCN-RB-tree index can support efficient search for trajectory and traffic zone. The aCN-RB-tree can find a moving object trajectory in a given time interval efficiently. It can support traffic management systems and mining systems in ubiquitous environments.

  • We studied the use of time-related information, with and without prediction, to support human operators performing moni-toring and control tasks in the process. Based on monitoring and control techniques used for Project Management we developed a display design for the process industries. A simulated power plant was used to test the hypothesis that availability of predictions along with information on past trends can improve the performances of the human operator handling faults. Several designs of dis-plays were tested in the experiment in which human operators had to detect and handle two types of faults(local and systems wide) in the simulated electricity generation process. Analysis of the results revealed that temporal data, with and without prediction, signifi-cantly reduced response time. Our results encourage the integration of temporal information and prediction in displays used for the control processes to enhance the capabilities of the human operators. Based on the analysis we proposed some guidelines for the de-signer of the human interface of a process control system.
