The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of traffic-related air pollution on the urban population in the Metropolitan Seoul area. In particular, this study analyzes urban population exposure to traffic-related particulate materials(PM). For the purpose, this study examines the relationships between traffic flows and PM concentration levels during the last fifteen years. Traffic volumes have been decreased significantly in recent year in Seoul, however, PM levels have been declined less compare to traffic volumes. It may be related with the rapid growth in the population and vehicle numbers in Gyenggi, the outskirt of Seoul, where several New Towns have been developed in the middle of 1990's. The spatial pattern of commuting has changed, and thus and travel distances and traffic volumes have increased along the main roads connecting CBDs in Seoul and New Towns consisting of large residential apartment complexes. These changes in traffic flows and travel behaviors cause increasing exposure to traffic-related air pollution for urban population over the Metropolitan Seoul area. GIS techniques are applied to analyze the spatial patterns of traffic flows, population distributions, PM distributions, and passenger flows comprehensively. This study also analyzes real time base traffic flow data and passenger flow data obtained from T-card transaction database applying data mining techniques. This study also attempts to develop a space-time model for assessing journey-time exposure to traffic related air pollutants based on travel passenger frequency distribution function. The results of this study can be used for the implications for sustainable transport systems, public health and transportation policy by reducing urban air pollution and road traffics in the Metropolitan Seoul area.
The changes of forest habitats and maeulsoops(village forests) in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea are examined using landscape indices and morphological pattern analysis, and their landscape-ecological implications on conserving biological diversity are presented. We used FRAGSTATS and GUIDOS software, as well as land cover maps(of 1989 and 2006) to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of habitat composition and configuration in surrounding landscapes of 34 representative maeulsoops and Jinan-gun. The results showed decreases in the amount of core habitats and corridors and habitat connectivity at a regional scale since 1989. In addition, multi-scale habitat analysis at a focal scale revealed that the structural and functional connectivity between forest habitats surrounding maeulsoops of the year 2006 was lower than that of the year 1989. In order to reduce forest fragmentation and to enhance the connectivity among habitats, it is necessary to provide the additional habitat corridors as well as preserving existing corridors and surrounding landscapes of maeulsoops. We also suggest that a combination of landscape indices and morphological spatial pattern analysis can provide an effective tool to assess the habitat functions and configuration in a rapidly changing landscape.

In fluvial and riparian ecosystems, biogeomorphological research has considered the complex, multi-way relationships between biological and hydro-geomorphological components over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. In this review, we discussed the scope and processes of fluvial biogeomorphology by explaining (1) the multi-lateral interactions between organisms and hydrogeomorphic conditions, (2) the relationships between biodiversity and habitat heterogeneity, and (3) the effects of disturbance on ecosystem patterns. Over time, an organism-landform complex along streams transitions in the sequences of geomorphic, pioneer, biogeomorphic, and ecological stages. Over space, water flow and sediment distributions interact with vegetation to modify channel topography. It is the habitat heterogeneity in streams that enhances riparian biodiversity. However, in the areas downstream of a dam, habitat types and conditions are substantially damaged and biodiversity should be reduced. In South Korea, riparian vegetation flourishes in general and, in particular, invasive species actively colonize in accordance with the changes in the fluvial conditions driven by local disturbances and global climate change. Therefore, the importance of understanding reciprocal relationships between living organisms and hydrogeomorphic conditions will ever increase in this era of rapid climate change and anthropogenic pressure. The fluvial biogeomorphic framework reviewed in this article will contribute to the ecological management and restoration of streams in Korea.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is thought as a well-controlled process by which unwanted cells are selectively eliminated. During the last decade many researches have elucidated molecules and their interactions involved in cell death by using largely in vitro induction of cell death or survival signals in a more defined manner, While these critical information and novel findings provide us with clearer understanding of mechanisms underlying cell death, it does by no means explain how PCD occurs and which cells or tissues are affected during normal embryonic development in vivo. In this study, we used zebrafish to examine whether the PCD is occurring selectively or randomly in developing embryos by whole mount in situ TUNEL analysis with specific markers for neural cells. The result revealed that the degree and distribution of TUNEL staining varied considerably throughout gastrulation stage, and there was also a number of TUNEL-negative embryos. Most of TUNEL-positive cells were scattered randomly throughout the blastoderm. During the gastrulation stage about 75 % of the embryos analyzed exhibited more than 5 TUNEL-positive cells. As the dorsal epiblast begins to thicken rather abruptly near the end of gastrulation, TUNEL-positive cells were mainly located along the dorsal side. Although there were some variations in TUNEL staining during segmentation and pharyngeal stages, TUNEL staining continued to be localized to the central nervous system, and was also detected in the sensory organs, trigeminal ganglions, and the primary sensory neurons. High levels of the cell death in developing brain between 20-somite and prim-6 stages are thought to play a role in the morphogenesis and organization of the brain. At prim-16 stage, cell death is considerably reduced in the brain region. Dying cells are mainly localized to the prospective brain region where ectodermal cells are about to initiate neurogenesis. As development progressed, high levels and more reproducible patterns of cell death were observed in the developing nervous system. Intensive TUNEL staining was restricted to the trigeminal ganglions, the primary sensory neurons, and sensory organs, such as olfactory pits and otic vesicles. Thus, PCD patterning in zebrafish embryos occurs randomly at early stages and becomes restricted to certain region of the embryos. The spatio-temporal pattern of PCD during the early embryonic development in zebrafish will provide basic information for further studies to elucidate genes involved in. regulation of PCD largely unknown in vivo during vertebrate embryogenesis.

Relationship between plankton assemblage and environmental factors in a semi-closed Chunsu Bay was examined. Temporal changes in phytoplankton assemblage was rather drastic than those found in most Korean coastal area in the Yellow Sea primarily due to the seawater temperature (T) and nutrient input from the dikes nearby. Freshwater discharge seemed to cause winter time increase of Diatoms (February) and summer time increase of Dinoflagellates at surface (July to August). Structural change in cell size with time was also found in Diatom. Zooplankton community structure was also changed with season probably due to the food concentration, seawater temperature and salinity (S). From principal component analysis (PCA) of zooplankton distribution, it was postulated that seasonal environmental changes such as T and S could explain about 32% of variability in zooplankton distribution along with phytoplankton cell numbers, while freshwater discharge could explain about 17%. Comparing with past data of 1985-1986, 1991-1992, the distributional patterns and percent composition of major species, Acartia hongi, Paracalanus parvus sensu lato and Centropages abdominalis, were similar. However, the abundances have been increased more than three times. The composition of other taxa than copepods showed significant changes.

Surface currents were observed by high-frequency (HF) radars off the Keum River estuary from December 2008 to February 2009. The dataset of observed surface currents had data gaps due to the interference of electromagnetic waves and the deteriorating weather conditions. To fill the data gaps an optimal interpolation procedure was developed. The characteristics of spatial correlation in the surface currents off the Keum River estuary were investigated and the spatial data gaps were filled using the optimal interpolation. Then, the temporal and spatial distribution of the interpolated surface currents and the patterns of interpolation error were examined. The correlation coefficients between the surface currents in the coastal region were higher than 0.7 because tidal currents dominate the surface circulation. The sample data covariance matrix (C), spatially averaged covariance matrix with localization ($C^G_{sm}$) and covariance matrix fitted by an exponential function ($C_{ft}$) were used to interpolate the original dataset. The optimal interpolation filled the data gaps and suppressed the spurious data with spikes in the time series of surface current speed so that the variance of the interpolated time series was smaller than that of the original data. When the spatial data coverage was larger (smaller) than 70% of the region, the interpolation error produced by $C^G_{sm}$ ($C_{ft}$) was smaller compared with that by C.
Purpose: Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). This study aimed to determine the temporal trends in antibiotic susceptibility of S. aureus in SSTI patients aged <19 years. Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted in pediatric patients with SSTI caused by community-associated S. aureus. Microbiologic and demographic data were collected, and the trends of antibiotic susceptibility results were evaluated. Results: From January 2010 to December 2018, a total of 807 S. aureus isolates were included. An overall increase in susceptibility of isolates to oxacillin was noted (P<0.001), with 75.0% of isolates being oxacillin-susceptible in 2018. S. aureus remained highly susceptible to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline, with 97.6% and 95.2% isolate susceptibility in 2018, respectively. Isolates from younger children aged 1 to 5 years had a significantly lower rate of susceptibility to oxacillin than older children aged 6 to 18 years (53.4% vs. 75.0%, P<0.001). Conclusions: The proportion of methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates appears to decrease in pediatric patients with community-associated SSTI caused by S. aureus. Clinicians should be aware of regional susceptibility patterns when choosing empirical regimens.
The concentrations of some ions ($NO{_3}^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $NH{_4}^+$) in soil solution collected by zero tension lysimeter in mature Pinus rigida plantations in Goksung, Jeonranam-do were measured at two soil depths (10cm and 30cm) following various levels of cutting intensity treatment (uncut, $6m{\times}50m$, $10m{\times}50m$, $20m{\times}50m$ strip crearcutting) three times (July 6. July 30, and August 4) between June 20 and August 4 1998. The ion concentrations in the soil solution were significantly different among sampling times, while the concentrations were not different among cutting levels or sampling depths. The ion concentrations in the soil solution decreased in the order of $NO{_3}^-$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $NH{_4}^+$ and the mean concentration was 3.60mg/L for $NO{_3}^-$, 1.7mg/L for $Ca^{2+}$, 0.5mg/L for $Mg^{2+}$, and 0.04mg/L for $NH{_4}^+$ respectively. These ion concentrations except for $NH{_4}^+$ ion were negatively correlated with the volume of collected soil solutions (r=-0.31~-0.41). The results suggest that the change of nutrient concentrations in the soil solution collected from the P. rigida plantations was related to the temporal input patterns of precipitation rather than the cutting intensity.

This paper proposes architectural and evacuation recommendations through evacuation experiments of two child care centers with disabilities. To achieve these purposes, a survey on the architectural characteristics and evacuation experiments was carried out. The results were as follows: (1) the child care center with disabilities were located within one kilometer or five minutes from a fire station and 119 safety center, but the architectural characteristics and the ratio of self-moving children in a care center were very different conditions. (2) The evacuation behavior patterns of children with a disability were as follows: hugging a child by a teacher with the arms, walking with hugging and holding the child by a teacher, moving a wheelchair with a helper, and drag-out a cerebral palsied child with a mat wrapping. (3) The speed of the evacuation was fast in the following order: drag-out with a mat wrapping a child with a disability, hugging the child with the arms, walking with hugging and holding child, and moving with a wheelchair. In the case of difficulties in the vertical evacuation, a temporal evacuation area was essential for children with disability.
Ongoing port baseline surveys are essential for developing ballast water management procedures in order to control unwanted or potentially risky species. Seasonal distributional patterns of marine dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans internationally recognized as harmful species and the related environmental factors were surveyed at Incheon, Gwangyang and Ulsan seaports in Korea from 2007 to 2009. The above three seaports were chosen because of their status as the busiest in Korea and characterized by their different bioregions. Average temperature ranged from $2.08^{\circ}C$ in winter to $26.39^{\circ}C$ in summer at Incheon, $7.22^{\circ}C$ in winter to $25.77^{\circ}C$ in summer at Gwangyang, and $11.59^{\circ}C$ in winter to $21.67^{\circ}C$ in summer at Ulsan during the study period. Average salinity varied from 26.88 in winter to 31.25 in summer at Incheon, 22.83 in winter to 33.41 in summer at Gwangyang, and 30.04 in winter to 33.90 in summer at Ulsan. Noctiluca scintillans appeared consistently at all ports during the study period, indicating its eurythermal and euryhaline nature. The highest abundances (21,813 to 41,753 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$) of N. scintillans were observed in May 2008 and 2009 at the outer stations of Incheon port. Abundances of between 10,000 and 30,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were only observed at the innermost station of Ulsan in May, while abundances of between 10,000 and 40,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were frequently observed throughout all stations at Gwangyang during the study period, coinciding with consistently high concentration of chlorophyll-a (hereafter chl-a) ($4.32-8.24\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$) compared to other ports. Spatio-temporal variation of chl-a concentration was not significantly correlated with abundances of N. scintillans (p>0.01). However, relatively high chl-a concentrations were consistently recorded along with high abundances of N. scintillans throughout all stations at Gwangyang compared to other ports. Abundances of N. scintillans observed at the three surveyed ports did not significantly (p>0.01) affect the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the surface mixed layer, indicating that the species abundances were not enough to cause reduction of dissolved oxygen during the study period. Presented results indicated that the Gwangyang seaport may provide the most suitable environment for a wide range of N. scintillans blooming compared to other ports.
