  • Recently several reports have claimed that the bath temperature changes, such as lower bath temperature, produce supersensitivity on the positive chronotropic effect of catecholamine in cat, mouse and guinea pig atria. However, others showed controversial results against temperature-dependent supersensitivity. Similarly, the inotropic effect of ouabain is diminished in febrile state, however some investigators indicated that cardiac glycoside showed less toxicities and less effects in hypothermic condition. In this study, the effects of norepinephrine and epinephrine on inotropy and chronotropy in isolated rat atria was investigated by changing the temperature of bath ($30^{\circ}C$, $^35{\circ}C$ and $38^{\circ}C$). In addition, the effects of ouabain on atria in hypothermic bath was also studied. The followings are the results. 1. At the lower bath temperature isolated rat atrial rate was decreased and contractility was increased. 2. The chronotropic responses to norepinephrine and epinephrine in $38^{\circ}C$ were decreased when the bath temperature lowered to $35^{\circ}C$ or $30^{\circ}C$, while the inotropic responses were not affected. 3. Hypothermic supersensitivity to norepinephrine or epinephrine was not observed in rat atrium. 4. The inotropic response to ouabain was potentiated but chronotropic response was diminished by a lowering in the bath temperature. In conclusion, the chronotropic response of rat atrium to catecholamine was decreased, however, hypothermic supersensitivity was no longer present in rat atrium and the inotropic response of ouabain was increased at lower bath temperature.

  • Main concern is to figure out the growth response of Pinus densiflora to hydrologic conditions in the central Korea. Continuous measurements were carried out with six trees with dendrometers in the Chungbuk National University experimental forest (Wolak-san) during 1995~1996. Surrounding hydrological conditions reflected by the solar radiation, air temperature, precipitation, soil water were included in measurements. Their effects on the biological response of trees was investigated and expressed as response functions. With these response functions, tree growth model was developed. Soil water availability was more related to the tree growth than air temperature. Limited number of biological measurements with dendrometer could permit determination of dynamics of radial tree growth to the hydrological conditions. Tree growth model could be used to check and revise the statistical transfer function of dendrohydrology.

  • The cometaboic biodegradation conditionso f trichloroethylene(TCE) by Burkholderia cepacia G4 were optimized using response surface analysis. The experimental sets of phenol concentration temperature and pH were designed using central composite experimental design. The optimal conditions of phenol concentration temperature and pH were determined to be 0.91 ppm 21.5$^{\circ}C$ and 7.65 respectively by the Ridge analysis of the contour plot for TCE biodegradation rates. The TCE biodegradation rate could be enhanced up to 2.43 nmol.mg protein$.$min by response surface methodology.

  • The effects of atmospheric thermal loads on the response of structural elements that are exposed to open environments have been recognized by research works and design specifications. The main source of atmospheric heat is solar radiation, which dominates the variation of the temperature of air, earth surface and all exposed objects. The temperature distribution along the depth of steel members may differ with the geometry configuration, which means that the different-configuration steel members may suffer different thermally induced strains and stresses. In this research, an experimental steel beam was instrumented with many thermocouples in addition to other sensors. Surface temperatures, air temperature, solar radiation and wind speed measurements were recorded continuously for 21 summer days. Based on a finite element thermal analysis, which was verified using the experimental records, several parametric studies were directed to investigate the effect of the geometrical parameters of AISC standard steel sections on their thermal response. The results showed that the overall size of the beam, its depth and the thickness of its elements are of significant effect on vertical temperature distributions and temperature differences.

  • To produce expanded, minimally hard extrudates from blends of raw pork meat (20%), defatted soy flour (25%), and corn starch using a single-screw extruder, various combinations of feed moisture, process temperature, and screw speed were evaluated. First series of extrusion runs were conducted according to a central composite rotatable design/response surface methodology (RSM). Upon assessing the full model for each response, insignificant terms were eliminated to determine final response surface models. Screw speed within the range evaluated was found to have no significant effect on expansion ratio (ER) or shear force (SF) of extrudates. Since examinations of the response surfaces and their generated grids of predicted values indicated that maximum ER and minimum SF were likely to be attained with a moisture-temperature combination outside the RSM experimental range, the second series of extrusion runs were conducted with several selected combinations of moisture and temperature to determine a practical optimum extrusion condition. The combination of 22.78% feed moisture, 16$0^{\circ}C$ process temperature, and 170 rpm screw speed was chosen as such a condition, and used in the final extrusion. The final product required less force to break than did commercial pretzel sticks.

  • KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has developed the GAMMA+ code for a thermo-fluid and safety analysis of a VHTR (Very High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor). A key safety issue of the VHTR design is to demonstrate its inherent safety features for an automatic reactor power trip and power stabilization during an anticipated transient without scram (ATWS) accident such as a loss of forced cooling by a trip of the helium circulator (LOFC) or a reactivity insertion by a control rod withdrawal (CRW). This paper intends to show the ATWS assessment capability of the GAMMA+ code which can simulate the reactor power response by solving the point-kinetic equations with six-group delayed neutrons, by considering the reactivity changes due to the effects of a core temperature variation, xenon transients, and reactivity insertions. The present benchmark calculations are performed by using the safety demonstration experiments of the 10 MW high temperature gas cooled-test module (HTR-10) in China. The calculation results of the power response transients and the solid core temperature behavior are compared with the experimental data of a LOFC ATWS test and two CRW ATWS tests by using a 1mk-control rod and a 5mk-control rod, respectively. The GAMMA+ code predicts the power response transients very well for the LOFC and CRW ATWS tests in HTR-10.

  • An application of thermal response coefficient method for obtaining thermal load on stud-frame walls in a typical house is presented. A set of stud-frame walls is two-dimensional heat conduction transients with composite structure. The ambient temperature on the right-hand face of the stud-frame walls is a typical day-cycle input and the room temperature on the left-hand face is a constant input. The desired output is thermal load at the left-hand face. The time-dependent ambient temperature is approximated by a continuous, piecewise-linear function each having one hour interval. The conduction problem is spatially discretized as 8 computer modelings by finite elements to obtain thermal response coefficients. The discretization and round-off errors can be neglected in the range of adequate number of nodes. A 60-node discretization is recommended as the optimum model among 8 computer modelings. Several sets of response coefficients of the stud-frame walls are generated by which the rate of heat transfer through the walls or some temperature in the walls can be calculated for different input histories.

  • The influence of daily water temperature changes on chemiluminescent (CL) response of phagocytes, plasma glucose level and mortality in cultured gray mullet (Mugil cephalus) was investigated. Among three experimental temperature groups, the fish in group I and group II were maintained constantly at $27^{\circ}C$ and $29^{\circ}C$, respectively, and those in group III were suffered daily elevation of water temperature from $27^{\circ}C$ to $29^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, then restored again to $27^{\circ}C$. After 1 week of maintaining at each experimental tank, the fish in group III showed significantly lower CL peak value (p < 0.01) and higher plasma glucose levels (p < 0.05) than those in group I and group II. The cumulative mortality of group III was $86.9\%$ within 3 days after being subjected to acute handling stress. On the other hand, the cumulative mortalities of group I and group II were $12.5\%$ and $19.2\%$, respectively. In conclusion, gray mullet farms, especially, in the vicinity of thermoelectric power plants should avoid stressing the fish during periods of high water temperature.

  • In most existing research, it is difficult to evaluate thermal comfort exactly because of reflecting individual ideal or psychological response by subjective questions. Physiological variable was selected in this study to evaluate objectively thermal comfort. MST was appeared very sensitively in indoor temperature and can express correctly thermal comfort of human body. The results of CSV are different each individual feeling sensation, so is difficult to evaluate detailedly thermal comfort unlike TSV. But the results of PP, AIx, ED, SEVR are greatly related to temperature change. So thermal comfort is evaluated more objectively by using PP, AIx, ED, SEVR on behalf of TSV, CSV. Human body was presented physiological feedback by temperature impetus and specially, tendency of heart rate agree with temperature change. Physiological reaction was showed sufficient possibility availing evaluation index of thermal comfort. In the future another one needs to review beside the selected physiological variable.

  • It was unusual crop weather for 1998 and 1999 compared with normal in Korea. The consecutive days of the optimum ripening period for rice plant that had daily mean temperature 21~23$^{\circ}C$ for 40 days after flowering, increased with long anomalies in 1998~99. The air temperature during ripening period was much higher than the optimum temperature and lower sunshine hour than norm in the local adaptability tests of newly developed rice lines during those years. In response of rice cultivation to warming and cloudy weather during crop season, the yield shall be decreased. Most scientists agree that the rate of heating is accelerating and temperature change could become increasingly disruptive. Weather patterns should also become more erratic. Agrometeorologists could be analyzed yearly variations of temperature, sunshine hour and rainfall pattern focused on transient agroclimate change for last a decade. Rice agronomists could be established taking advantage of real time agricultural meteorology information system for fertilization, irrigation, pest control and harvest. Also they could be analyzed the characteristics of flowering response of the recommended and newly bred rice cultivars for suitable cropping plan such as cultural patterns and sowing or transplanting date. Rice breeders should be deeply considered introducing the characteristics of basic vegetative type of flowering response like Togil rices as prospective rice cultivars corresponding to global warming because of the rices needed higher temperature at ripening stage than japonica rices, photoperiod-sensitive and thermo-sensitive ecotypes.
