  • In this study, various fundamental experiments including durability and time-dependent deformation are performed to compile a database for a utilization of high-strength concrete for PSC bridges. In the mix design, concrete strength at early age when prestressing forces are introduced to the PSC member and slumpflow suitable for pumping of concrete are considered to make a concrete fit for PSC bridges. The main parameters investigated are the kinds and replacement ratios of mineral admixtures and low-heat cement. Experimental tests on durability include penetration of chloride ions, freezing-thawing, combined deterioration, and simple adiabatic temperature rise test. In addition, time-dependent deformation such as creep, drying and autogenous shrinkage, which is particularly important factor in the design and construction of PSC bridges, is tested and analyzed.

  • In maize coleoptile segments where auxin transport capacity decreases with time following excision, susceptability of the tissue to transport inhibitors such as N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), 3,4,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) or high concentrations of IAA was found to be rather increased. A time-dependent increase in the sensitivity to NPA can be postulated since the dose-response curve for NPA was shifted in the‘aged’tissue to the left (i.e. lower concentration). Preincubation of the tissue at a low temperature abolished the time-dependent sensitivity change, suggesting that cellular metabolism could be involved. The NPA-sensitive state was also brought about by calcium depletion of the tissue, which can be partially reversed by addition of calcium. Presence of exogenous IAA in the preincubation medium kept the auxin transport system from decay, implicating auxin as an endogenous controlling factor. Results of our experiments indicate a reversible, time-dependent changes of auxin transport system in which transport capacity and sensitivity to NPA are tightly coupled. Changes in the sensitivity to NPA were also seen in auxin action as well.

  • Both low and high temperatures affect plant growth and development at whole plant level, tissue and even cell level through a variety of metabolic changes. Temperature stress is one of frequently occurring problems in greenhouse crops in summer and winter seasons due to the wide-spread year-round cultivation. In the present study, we investigated the extent of the inhibition of growth, macro-element uptake and soluble carbohydrate production, and the effect of extra-supply of minerals as a means of the recovery from temperature damage. Tomato plants were grown five different growth temperatures (15/8, 20/13, 28/21, 33/23 and $36/26^{\circ}C$), and extra-supply of minerals was composed of 1.5- and 2.0-fold stronger than the standard nutrition (1/2 strength of Hoagland's solution). Temperature stress significantly adversely affected tomato growth and mineral uptake, whereas soluble carbohydrate accumulation represented temperature-dependent response, more accumulation at low temperature and more consumption at high temperature. The soluble sugars in leaves and stems were mostly declined with the supply of extra-minerals at low and optimal temperatures, whereas remained unchanged at high temperature. The starch levels also remained unchanged or slightly decreased.

  • Yttrium thin film, 580nm thick, was prepared by electron beam evaporation. Film was hydrogenated room temperature upto 40 bar hydrogen pressure, without any activation process. Hydrogen concentration was determined by a quartz-crystal microbalance(QCM) method. YH2.9 sample was made without any pulverization. Electrical resistance was measured by four-point DC method in the temperature range between room temperature and 30K for various hydrogen concentration, x=0 to 2.9 of YHx sample. Temperature dependent resistance of YH2.9 shows low temperature minimum at 105K, the metal-semiconductor transition at 260K, and a hystersis above 210K.

  • Temperature-dependent current-voltage characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) were studied in a device structure of ITO/TPD/Alq$_3$/Al to understand conduction mechanism. The current-voltage characteristics were measured in the temperature range of 8K ~ 300K. We analyzed an electrical conduction mechanism of the OLEDS using space-charge-limited current(SCLC) and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling. In the temperature range above 150k, the conduction mechanism could be explained by space charge limited current from the inversely proportional temperature dependence of exponent m. The characteristic trap energy is found to be about 0.15ev. At low temperatures below 150k, the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling conduction mechanism is dominant. We have obtained a zero field barrier height to be about 0.6~0.8eV.

  • This paper presents the material properties of LPCVD silicon films formed using Si2H6 gas at various deposition temperatures. To study the structural properties depending on the deposition temperature, XRD, EBD and TEM analyses were used. The maximum grain size in this experiment was obtained at the deposition temperature of 485ø C. It is discussed that LPCVD films formed below the deposition temperature of 485ø C are promising for low temperature TFT applications. The enhancement of the film characteristics results from the reduction of grain boundary density. We also observed that the film properties of Si2H6 at 600ø C was quite different from those of Si H4 at 600ø C. It has shown that the grain structure from a TEM analysis was elliptical and not dependent on the deposition temperature.

  • Thermoforming is one of the most versatile and economical process to produce polymer products. The drawback of thermoforming is difficult to control thickness of final products. Temperature distribution affects the thickness distribution of final products, but temperature difference between surface and center of sheet is difficult to decrease because of low thermal conductivity of ABS material. In order to decrease temperature difference between surface and center, heating profile must be expressed as exponential function form. In this study, Finite Difference Method was used to find out the coefficients of optimal heating profiles. Through investigation, the optimal results using Finite Difference Method show that temperature difference between surface and center of sheet can be remarkably minimized with satisfying Temperature of Forming Window.

  • This study investigated the effects of a low-voltage ohmic heating process (2.5 and 3.8 V/cm) on the thawing characteristics and NaCl diffusion of pork. The thawing rate of pork was dependent on the applied voltages and brine salinities, and few differences were obtained in pork quality parameters (color, water-holding capacity, and shear force) regarding the different treatments. The NaCl concentration of pork after ohmic thawing was higher than that following brine-immersion thawing, however, the NaCl diffusion did not differ from when fresh meat was immersed in brine. For application of the ohmic process in fresh pork, various ohmic pulses were generated in order to prevent the meat from overheating, and the results indicated that the ohmic process was a better way to enhance NaCl diffusion compared with immersing pork at high temperature. Although the mechanisms involved in NaCl diffusion at low-voltage electric field strength were unclear, the present study demonstrated that the ohmic process has a potential benefit in the application of meat processing.

  • The effects of CeO2 on the properties of cordierite-based glass-ceramics and its applicability to low firing temperature substrate were examined. Glass-ceramics were prepared by sintering the glass powder compacts at 900~100$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. Density, bending strength, dielectric constant and thermal expansion coefficient of the glass-ceramics were measured as functions of CeO2 contents and sintering temperatures. By adding CeO2, dense glass-ceramics were obtained below 100$0^{\circ}C$. dielectric constant and bending strength were more dependent on the porosity of glass-ceramics containing 5 wt% CeO2, sintered at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, were as follows; relative density is 95.3%, bending strength is 178$\pm$11 MPa, dielectric constant is 4.98$\pm$0.20 (at 1 MHz) and thermal expansion coefficient is 33.7$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the glass-ceramics containing 5 wt% CeO2 appeared to be suitable for low firing temperature substrate of electronic devices.
