Temperature and salinity were observed in Kugum Suro Channel in February, April, August and October 1993. Temperature ranged from $7.0^{\circ}C\;to\;25.0^{\circ}C$ throughout the year and its variation was about $18^{\circ}C$. The maximum temperature difference between surface and bottom was less than $0.75^{\circ}C$ for a year, which meant that the temperature stratification in Kugum Suro Channel was considerably week. Salinity had also a small variation range of less than $0.5\%_{\circ}$. Salinity varied from $34.0\%_{\circ}$ in April to $30.0\%_{\circ}$ in August and its fluctuation patterns were quite similar to the seasonal variations of the precipitation and the duration of sunshine observed at Kohung Weather station. Seasonal variation of sea water density in T-S diagram showed that the water mass in Kugum Suro Channel could be largely affected by regional atmospheric conditions. Temperature increased in ebb tide and decreased in flood tide, but salinity decreased in ebb tide and increased in flood tide for a day. The period of fluctuations in temperature and salinity measured for 25 hours was nearly coincident with the semi-diurnal tide which was predominant in that region. Stratification parameters computed in Kugum Suro Channel areas were less than $4.0J/m^3$ the year round, which indicated that vortical mixing from the bottom boundary caused by tidal current played an important role in deciding the stratification regime in Kugum Suro Channel. In estimating the equation which defines stratification and mixing effects in the observed areas, the tidal mixing term ranged from $4.7J/M^3\;to\;14.1J/m^3$ was greater than any other terms like solar radiation, river discharge and wind mixing.
We demonstrate here a dynamic structure of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) as revealed by $^{13}$ C NMR studies on [3_$^{13}$ C]_,[1-$^{13}$ C]Ala- and/or Val-labeled wild type and a variety of site-directed mutants at ambient temperature. For this purpose, well-resolved (up to twelve) I$^{13}$ C NMR peaks were assigned with reference to the displacement of peaks due to the conformation-dependent I$^{13}$ C chemical shifts and reduced peak-intensities due to site-directed mutations. Revealed bR structure was not rigid as anticipated from 2D crystals of hexagonal array but a dynamically heterogeneous, undergoing a variety of local fluctuations depending upon specific site with frequency range of 10$^2$ -10$^{8}$ Hz. In particular, dynamics- dependent suppression of peaks turned out to be very sensitive to the motion of 10$^{-4}$ s and 10$^{-5}$ s interfered with frequency of magic angle spinning and proton decoupling, respectively. It is also noteworthy that such dynamic feature is strongly dependent upon the manner of 2D crystalline packing: $^{13}$ C NMR peaks of monomeric bR yielded either highly broadened or completely suppressed signals, depending upon the type of $^{13}$ C-labeled amino-acid residues.
Observations by CTD castings, moored current meters and satellite imageries reveal some physical characteristics of the area around the tidal mixing front found in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea. Tidal mixing is the greatest at the promontory of Taean Peninsula with a front around it. The front appears in April with the start of solar heating, becomes most clear in August and disappears in November with the start of surface cooling. In the north of the front, tidal fluctuations of temperature and salinity induced by tidal currents manifest the existence of the front, Differently from the usual tidal mixing front, the front in Kyunggi Bay is formed by presence of the water discharged from the Han River which meets the offshore water at the front. Near the surface cold center, vertically well-mixed zone extends to about 50 Km offshore from the coast, Farther south, this structure is generally retained but with lesser degree of vertical mixing. Within the relatively well-fixed coastal zone, the fresh water discharged from the Kum River makes another salinity front of smaller extent. At some places around this salinity front, an Upwelling-like feature is remarked.
Terminal lakes are widely distributed in the arid and semi-arid Gobi of Mongolia, and serves as important water resource for local people and livestock. However, such lakes are subject to great fluctuations in its size depending on climatic conditions and human water utilization. The Orog Lake is one such example that has shown remarkable fluctuation in recent years. In this study, we investigated the temporal changes of Orog Lake surface area by using 16-day MODIS 250 m NDVI products from 2000 to 2010. The results were compared with climate variability represented by monthly precipitation and temperature. Our results show that the Orog Lake gradually shrank for the period from 2000 to 2010, but with a significant range of seasonal and inter-annual variability. The lake area showed considerable seasonal variations, as it expanded in spring and fall, primarily due to snow melt and summer precipitation, respectively. Extreme drought period from 2000 to 2002 triggered the substantial reduction in lake area, leading to dry-up in year 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009. After dry-up once occurred in 2005, the lake repeated reappearance and disappearance depending on seasonal and annual precipitation. Our findings implicate that the ground water fluctuated around the lake bottom level since 2005. This suggests the highly vulnerable nature of Orog lake, which greatly depends on future precipitation change.
Morphology, anatomy and diurnal acid fluctuations were investigated monthly for the succulent C4 dicot Portulaca grandiflora Hook. growing under natural environmental conditions. Modified Kranz-Type sturcture and typical CAM-like cells were shown in leaves and stems, respectively. Values of indices of mesophyll succulence inleaves stems were 5.62 and 16.68, respectively. The number of stomata were 1476$\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ in leaves while the stomata in stems were not observed through growing seasons from spring to summer. However, on Sep. 16, 1981 in defoliate autumn season, stomata were begun to be produced for the first time in stems and the number were increased gradually to 216$\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ on Oct. 29. This feature can be interpreted as a seasonal plant dimorphism. P. grandiflora exhibited a diurnal fluctuation of titratable acidity in leaves and stems. Seasonal amplitudes of acid fluctuation in stems were as follows: 27 $\mu$eq./g.f.wt. on Sep. 21; 57$\mu$eq/g.f.wt. on Oct. 3; 80$\mu$eq./g.f.wt. on Oct. 21. Such the results in seasonal amplitude were able to consider due to decrease of light period and cool night air temperature according to change of season. Also, the naturally defoliated stems which had already stomata exhibited usual diurnal acid fluctuation, on the other hand the treated stems which possessed artificially closed stomata showed a few of acid fluctuation. Especially, stomata in stems are developed by seasonal dimorphism and activated stomata participate in CAM behavior of stems.

Viscous solutions of supersonic side jet nozzle and supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful devise as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. The aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet devise itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle geometry, the chamber pressure and temperature. On the other hand, the jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the plate/nozzle distance increases, and the frequency of the wall pressure is estimated on the order of 10.0 KHz. Objectives of this paper are to show accurate simulation of nozzle flow itself and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a wall at a close range.

The quality of the effluent from an activated sludge aeration tank can deteriorate when the substrate removal rate decreases due to an abrupt reduction in the DO concentration, which is affected by such operating conditions as the loading rate, temperature, wastewater composition, and so on. In this research, a DO control system that includes a PI (proportional-integral) controller/Hiraoka controller was developed and applied to a pilot-scale activated sludge process, then its acceptability was estimated. The applicability of the respiration rate to DO control was also estimated. The respiration rate indicated a variety of input organic loading rates, which is the main disturbance to the DO concentration in an aeration tank. When the influent concentration incrementally decreased and increased between CODcr 1,000 mg/l and 100 mg/l, the control system with a PI controller exhibited a good llperformance-the average DO concentrations were 2.00$\pm$0.14 mg/l and 1.88$\pm$0.15 mg/l (set value was 2.0 mg/l), respectively, and the settling time was just 10 minites. When the control system was operated for 4 days, the DO concentration was 1.99$\pm$0.18 mg/l and 32.6% of the air flowrate was saved. However, the fluctuations in the respiration rates and air flowrates were severe, which could be harmful to the stability of the biomass and mechanical stability of the blower. A possible approach to solve this problem may be the simultaneous control of the loading rate and DO concentration.
Ministry of Environment has been operating water quality monitoring network in order to obtain the basic data for the water environment policies and comprehensively understand the water quality status of public water bodies such as rivers and lakes. The observed water quality data is very important to analyze by applying statistical methods because there are seasonal fluctuations. Typically, monthly water quality data has to analyze that the transition comprise a periodicity since the change has the periodicity according to the change of seasons. In this study, trends, SOM and RDA analysis were performed at the Mulgeum station using water quality data for temperature, BOD, COD, pH, SS, T-N, T-P, Chl-a and Colon-bacterium observed from 1989 to 2013 in the Nakdong River. As a result of trends, SOM and RDA, the Mulgeum station was found that the water quality is improved, but caution is required in order to ensure safe water supply because concentrations in water quality were higher in the early spring(1~3 month) the most.
To determine the effect of air pollution reduction policies, the long-term trend of air pollutants should be analyzed. Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter is a low-pass filter, produced through repeated iterations of a moving average to separate each variable into its temporal components. The moving average for a KZ(m, p) filter is calculated by a filter with window length m and p iterations. The output of the first pass subsequently becomes the input for the next pass. Adjusting the window length and the number of iterations makes it possible to control the filtering of different scales of motion. To break down the daily mean $PM_{10}$ into individual time components, we assume that the original time series comprises of a long-term trend, seasonal variation, and a short-term component. The short-term component is attributable to weather and short-term fluctuations in precursor emissions, while the seasonal component is a result of changes in the solar angle. The long-term trend results from changes in overall emissions, pollutant transport, climate, policy and/or economics. The long-term trend of the daily mean $PM_{10}$ decreased sharply from $59.6ug/m^3$ in 2002 to $44.6ug/m^3$ in 2015. This suggests that there was a long-term downward trend since 2005. The difference between the unadjusted and meteorologically adjusted long-term $PM_{10}$ is small. Therefore, we can conclude that $PM_{10}$ is unaffected by the meteorological variables (total insolation, daily mean temperature, daily mean relative humidity, daily mean wind speed, and daily mean local atmospheric pressure) in Busan.
This study was conducted to determine the winter ecology of the small brown planthopper (SBPH), laodelphax striatellus Fallen, in Milyang, east Kyungsangnamdo province. The age distribution in the overwintering SBPH population varied according to collection dates. In early December, the population distribution was 60% 4th instar, 30% 3rd instar, 6% 5th instar, 3.4% 2nd instar with very few adults and 1st instar. In early March 5th instars had the highest propotion (47-50%) with 4th instar 44-46%. In early April the adult population was 75-81% of the population. The averaged nymphal instar converted the age distribution of he overwintering SBPH in to the into the numerical values tended to increase continuously. However, there were some differences in the averaged nymphal instar of overwintering SBPH annually and these differences resulted from different age distribution of the overwintering SBPH due to different annual temperature fluctuations during overwitering periods. The weight of the overwintering SBPH increased continuously during overwintering periods. The collection density of the overwintering SBPH population was significantly higher on the levee than in the barley field. Percent nymphal parasitism by haplogonatopus atratus in the overwintering SBPH population averaged about 21% regardless of overwintering years.
