Optical methods were developed to examine their feasibility for quality evaluation of peanut with pod. Surface color and internal quality of peanut were measured without contact. The surface color of peanut was measured by light reflectance at a region of visible wavelengths. Its characteristic was high correlated with a visual grading of peanut. A trial machine for the color grading of peanut was developed using an optical sensor and it was considered to compare with the visual grading. The spectral reflectance at a region of near infrared wavelengths from 1,200 to 2,500nm was measured , and the chemical components of peanut were related to spectral reflectance at special wavelengths. The protein, fat and moisture contents of peanut were estimated by the near infrared methods. An infrared imaging method was developed to evaluate the internal quality of peanut with pod. As thermal characteristic of peanut with pod was deeply related to internal quality , the quality of peanut can be evaluated by temperature changes on the surface of peanut. Measurement of surface color, near infrared reflectance and thermal imaging were shown to be very effective in grading of peanut with pod.

In this paper, we design and build an information system for the growth management of agricultural products and aquatic products by ubiquitous computing. So that, we installed various sensor systems and developed IP Cam to establish monitoring. It was possible to construct an environmental management system based on IT technology by a database that directly controls and manages the growth conditions of agricultural products and aquatic products by monitoring. We have installed various sensors that can acquire data in real time and IP Cam is designed and manufactured in three parts. It was applied to agricultural and marine products and monitored soil moisture, temperature, and environmental information to establish conditions for growth environment.
This experiment used the enclosed bench-scale reactors of 242 liters was conducted to obtain basic data on temporal and spatial variations in temperature, oxygen and moisture content, which were important factors of biological activities, during composting of mixture of dairy manure and rice straw. The reactors with thermocouples, oxygen sensor and datalogger were aerated at four different rates of 0.09, 0.18, 0.90 and 1.79 l $min^{-1}kg$ dry $solids^{-1}$. The higher aeration rates were, the faster the rates of increase and decrease in composting temperature were in both of initial and turnover stage, and the smaller the temperature difference between exhaust air and composting materials. Composting temperature of initial stage increased suddenly in all aeration rates, then stationary phase of temperature in materials and exhaust air showed at $50{\sim}53^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours and at $45^{\circ}C$ between 5 and 15 hours, respectively. In initial stage the maximum temperature was decreased with increasing aeration rates but in the stage after turnover it was the opposite except for 1.79 l $min^{-1}kg^{-1}$. Time arrived at the maximum temperature of composting materials was later in low-aeration rates than high-aeration rates at both stages. Time maintained high-temperature more than $45^{\circ}C$ was rapidly decreased with increasing aeration rates. In initial stage of composting maintaining time of $65^{\circ}C$ or more was the longest in the treatments of 0.09 and 0.18 l $min^{-1}kg{-1}$, while those of $55{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ and $45{\sim}55^{\circ}C$ was in 0.90 and 1.79 l $min^{-1}kg{-1}$, respectively. The minimum oxygen content and the maximum oxygen consumption rate in exhaust air through composting materials showed the increased trends with increasing aeration rates. In initial stage the minimum oxygen content was ranged from 0.9% to 7.4% for 32 to 59.5 hours and the maximum oxygen consumption rate was $1.89{\sim}6.48$$gh^{-1}kgVS^{-1}$. In the stage after turnover their levels were $2.1{\sim}19.9%$ and $1.76{\sim}3.49 %$g/h-㎏ VS, respectively, for 16 to 49.5 hours.
The effects of storage form (paddy and milled rice) and storage period (1, 2, and 3 years) of rice at low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$ on physicochemical properties of milled and cooked rice and sensory characteristics of cooked rice were investigated. The proximate compositions except moisture content of rice decreased as the storage period increased. Water binding capacity, solubility and swelling power of rice flour decreased with the extended storage period. In the amylogram, the initial pasting temperature, paste viscosity and breakdown of paddy rice flour slurry decreased after 2 years of storage. Moisture content of cooked rice increased while the amount of water evaporated during cooking decreased. These trends were obvious with the longer storage period. Lightness and yellowness of cooked rice were greatly changed after 3 years of storage, regardless of storage form. Texture profile analysis of cooked rice by Texture Analyzer revealed that hardness, fracturability, gumminess were gradually increased while adhesiveness decreased as the storage period of rice increased. A trained panel found that color intensity, intactness of grains, rancid flavor, rice bran flavor, wet cardboard flavor, hardness and chewiness of cooked rice increased with the longer storage period. However, glossiness, transparency, plumpness, puffed corn flavor, dairy flavor, boiled egg white flavor, sweet taste, adhesiveness to lips, smoothness and inner moisture decreased with the extended storage period up to 3 years. Instrumental hardness was highly correlated with sensory hardness.
Pressure ulcers are serious complications of tissue damage that can develop in patients with diminished pain sensation and diminished mobility. Pressure ulcers can result in irreversible tissue damage caused by ischemia resulting from external loading. There are many intrinsic and extrinsic contributors to the problem, including interface tissue pressure, shear, temperature, moisture, hygiene, nutrition, tissue tolerance, sensory and motor dysfunction, disease and infection, posture, and body support systems. The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between buttock interface pressure and seating position, wheelchair propulsion speed. Seated-interface pressure was measured using the Force Sensing Array pressure mapping system. Twenty subjects propelled wheelchair handrim on a motor-driven treadmill at different velocities (40, 60, 80 m/min) and seating position used recline ($100^{\circ}$, $110^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$) with a wheelchair simulator. Interface pressure consists of average (mean of the pressure sensor values) and maximum pressure (highest individual sensor value). The results of this study were as follows; No significant correlation in maximum/average pressure was found between a static position and a 40 m/min wheelchair propulsion (p>.05). However, a significant increase in maximum/average pressure were identified between conditions of a static position and 60 m/min, and 80 m/min wheelchair propulsion (p<.05). No significant correlation in maximum pressure were found between a $90^{\circ}$ recline (neutral position) and a $100^{\circ}$, $110^{\circ}$, or $120^{\circ}$ recline of the wheelchair back (p>.05). No significant difference in average pressure was found between conditions of a $90^{\circ}$ recline and both a $100^{\circ}$ and $110^{\circ}$ recline of wheelchair back. However, a significant reduction in average pressure was identified between conditions of a $90^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}$ recline of wheelchair back (p<.05). This study has shown some interesting results that reclining the seat by $120^{\circ}$ reduced average interface pressure, including the reduction or prevention in edema. And interface pressure was greater during dynamic wheelchair propulsion compared with static seating. Therefore, the optimal seating position and seating system ought to provide postural control and pressure relief. We need an education on optimal seating position and a suitable propulsion speeds for wheelchair users.

Malaria infection is sensitively influenced by regional meteorological conditions along with global climate change. Remote sensing techniques have become an important tool for extraction of climatic and environmental factors, including rainfall, temperature, surface water, soil moisture, and land use, which are directly linked to the habitat qualities of malaria mosquitoes. Improvement of sensor fidelity with higher spatial and spectral resolution, new multinational sensor development, and decreased data cost have nurtured diverse remote sensing applications in malaria research. In 1984, eradication of endemic malaria was declared in Korea, but reemergence of malaria was reported in mid-1990s. Considering constant changes in malaria cases since 2000, the epidemiological management of the disease needs careful monitoring. Geographically, northmost counties neighboring North Korea have been ranked high in the number of malaria cases. High infection rates in these areas drew special attention and led to a hypothesis that malaria dispersion in these border counties might be caused by north-origin, malaria-bearing adult mosquitoes. Habitat conditions of malaria mosquitoes are important parameters for prediction of the vector abundance. However, it should be realized that malaria infection and transmission is a complex mechanism, where non-environmental factors, including human behavior, demographic structure, landscape structure, and spatial relationships between human residence and the vector habitats, are also significant considerations in the framework of medical geography.
In this study the retrieval algorithms have been developed to retrieve total precipitable water (TPW) from Terra/Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) infrared measurements using a physical iterative retrieval method and a split-window technique over East Asia. Retrieved results from these algorithms were validated against Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) over ocean and radiosonde observation over land and were analyzed for investigating the key factors affecting the accuracy of results and physical processes of retrieval methods. Atmospheric profiles from Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS), which produces analysis and prediction field of atmospheric variables over East Asia, were used as first-guess profiles for the physical retrieval algorithm. We used RTTOV-7 radiative transfer model to calculate the upwelling radiance at the top of the atmosphere. For the split-window technique, regression coefficients were obtained by relating the calculated brightness temperature to the paired radiosonde-estimated TPW. Physically retrieved TPWs were validated against SSM/I and radiosonde observations for 14 cases in August and December 2004 and results showed that the physical method improves the accuracy of TPW with smaller bias in comparison to TPWs of RDAPS data, MODIS products, and TPWs from split-window technique. Although physical iterative retrieval can reduce the bias of first-guess profiles and bring in more accurate TPWs, the retrieved results show the dependency upon initial guess fields. It is thought that the dependency is due to the fact that the water vapor absorption channels used in this study may not reflect moisture features in particular near surface.

Salinity is not only an important variable that determines the density of the ocean but also one of the main parameters representing the global water cycle. Ocean salinity observations have been mainly conducted using ships, Argo floats, and buoys. Since the first satellite salinity was launched in 2009, it is also possible to observe sea surface salinity in the global ocean using satellite salinity data. However, the satellite salinity data contain various errors, it is necessary to validate its accuracy before applying it as research data. In this study, the salinity accuracy between the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite salinity data and the in-situ salinity data provided by the Ieodo ocean research station was evaluated, and the error characteristics were analyzed from April 2015 to August 2020. As a result, a total of 314 match-up points were produced, and the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias of salinity were 1.79 and 0.91 psu, respectively. Overall, the satellite salinity was overestimated compare to the in-situ salinity. Satellite salinity is dependent on various marine environmental factors such as season, sea surface temperature (SST), and wind speed. In summer, the difference between the satellite salinity and the in-situ salinity was less than 0.18 psu. This means that the accuracy of satellite salinity increases at high SST rather than at low SST. This accuracy was affected by the sensitivity of the sensor. Likewise, the error was reduced at wind speeds greater than 5 m s-1. This study suggests that satellite-derived salinity data should be used in coastal areas for limited use by checking if they are suitable for specific research purposes.

Recently, long-term cultivation is becoming more common with the increase in tomato hydroponics. In hydroponics, it is very important to supply an appropriate nutrient solution considering the nutrient and moisture requirements of crops, in terms of productivity, resource use, and environmental conservation. Since seasonal environmental changes appear severely in long-term cultivation, it is so critical to manage irrigation control considering these changes. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of irrigation volume on growth and yield in tomato long-term cultivation using coir substrate. The irrigation volume was adjusted at 4 levels (high, medium high, medium low and low) by different irrigation frequency. Irrigation scheduling (frequency) was controlled based on solar radiation which measured by radiation sensor installed outside the greenhouse and performed whenever accumulated solar radiation energy reached set value. Set value of integrated solar radiation was changed by the growing season. The results revealed that the higher irrigation volume caused the higher drainage rate, which could prevent the EC of drainage from rising excessively. As the cultivation period elapsed, the EC of the drainage increased. And the lower irrigation volume supplied, the more the increase in EC of the drainage. Plant length was shorter in the low irrigation volume treatment compared to the other treatments. But irrigation volume did not affect the number of nodes and fruit clusters. The number of fruit settings was not significantly affected by the irrigation volume in general, but high irrigation volume significantly decreased fruit setting and yield of the 12-15th cluster developed during low temperature period. Blossom-end rot occurred early with a high incidence rate in the low irrigation volume treatment group. The highest weight fruits was obtained from the high irrigation treatment group, while the medium high treatment group had the highest total yield. As a result of the experiment, it could be confirmed the effect of irrigation amount on the nutrient and moisture stabilization in the root zone and yield, in addition to the importance of proper irrigation control when cultivating tomato plants hydroponically using coir substrate. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the research on this topic, as it is judged that the precise irrigation control algorithm based on root zone-information applied to the integrated environmental control system, will contribute to the improvement of crop productivity as well as the development of hydroponics control techniques.

Coarse woody debris (CWD), which is a component of the forest ecosystem, plays a major role in forest energy flow and nutrient cycling. In particular, CWD isolates carbon for a long time and is important in terms of slowing the rate of carbon released from the forest to the atmosphere. Therefore, this study measured the physiochemical characteristics and respiration rate ($R_{CWD}$) of CWD for Larix kaempferi and Pinus rigida in temperate forests in central Korea. In summer 2018, CWD samples from decay class (DC) I to IV were collected in the 14 forest stands. $R_{CWD}$ and physiochemical characteristics were measured using a closed chamber with a portable carbon dioxide sensor in the laboratory. In both species, as CWD decomposition progressed, the density ($D_{CWD}$) of the CWD decreased while the water content ($WC_{CWD}$) increased. Furthermore, the carbon concentrations did not significantly differ by DC, whereas the nitrogen concentration significantly increased and the C/N ratio decreased. The respiration rate of L. kaempferi CWD increased significantly up to DC IV, but for P. rigida it increased to DC II and then unchanged for DC II-IV. Accordingly, except for carbon concentration, all the measured characteristics showed a significant correlation with $R_{CWD}$. Multiple linear regression showed that $WC_{CWD}$ was the most influential factor on $R_{CWD}$. $WC_{CWD}$ affects $R_{CWD}$ by increasing microbial activity and is closely related to complex environmental factors such as temperature and light conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to study their correlation and estimate the time-series pattern of CWD moisture.
