  • A study was carried out to determine the solidification cracking susceptibility of Ni-base superalloy as a function of Fe content in base metal. Three kinds of Ni-base superalloys with three different levels of Fe content were used. The solidification cracking susceptibility was evaluated by the Trans-Varestraint test at four different strain levels. Quantitative analysis of crack revealed that the solidification crack length and the temperature range in which hot cracking occurred in fusion zone (Brittle Temperature Range, BTR) decreased with a decrease in Fe content. Further, the thermo-calc data indicated that the solidification temperature range also decreased with decreasing Fe content. From these results, it was deduced that the improvement of the solidification cracking susceptibility with decreasing Fe content was attributed to the decrease of the solidification temperature range.

  • Cold cracking of weldment is one of the most serious welding problems. A sufficient quantity of diffusible hydrogen, a residual stress, and a sensitive microstructure are the causes of cold cracking. Removal of any one of these factors can be used to prevent cold cracking. Application of flux cored arc welding process is increasing due to high productivity and easiness of welding. In addition, to prevent cold cracking in the HAZ or weldment, preheat temperature and interpass temperature have to be controlled. In this study, the effect of preheat temperature on the levels of diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal deposited using flux cored wire was examined. The levels of preheat temperature of base metal specimen were ambient temperature, 50, 100 and $150^{\circ}C$ respectively. The result showed that the increase of preheat temperature was a linear relationship with reduction of diffusible hydrogen content in weldment.

  • High-strength concrete (HSC) generally is made with high amount of cement which may release large amount of hydration heat at early age. The hydration heat will increase the internal temperature of slab and may cause potential cracking. In this study, slab specimens with a dimension of 600 × 600 × 100 mm were cast with concrete incorporating silica fume for test. The thermistors were embedded in the slabs therein to investigate the interior temperature development. The test variables include water-to-binder ratio (0.25, 0.35, 0.40), the cement replacement ratio of silica fume (RSF; 5 %, 10 %, 15 %) and fly ash (RFA; 10 %, 20 %, 30 %). Test results show that reducing the W/B ratio of HSC will enhance the temperature of first heat peak by hydration. The increase of W/B decrease the appearance time of second heat peak, but increase the corresponding maximum temperature. Increase the RSF or decrease the RFA may decrease the appearance time of second heat peak and increase the maximum central temperature of slab. HSC slab with the range of W/B ratio of 0.25 to 0.40 may occur cracking within 4 hours after casting. Reducing W/B may lead to intensive cracking damage, such as more crack number, and larger crack width and length.

  • The likelihood of failure for the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of caustic cracking, which affect to a risk of facilities, was analyzed through the risk based-inspection using API-581 BRD. We found that SCC of the caustic cracking was occurred above 5 % NaOH concentration, and the technical module subfactor (TMSF) was maximized for above 50 % concentration. The heat traced and monitoring were not sensitive to the TMSF with NaOH concentration and temperature. But the steam out was more of less affect minimum value of the TMSF. Also, the inspection number, the inspection effectiveness, and the year since inspection were very sensitive to the TMSF with NaOH concentration and temperature. Therefore, the plan of next inspection will be established with compositively considering those at once.

  • The evaluation of reheat cracking susceptibility in CrMoV turbine rotor steel was performed using thermally simulated heat affected zones. The examinations were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurement and a Charpy type notch opening three point bend test. It was found that reheat cracking susceptibility increased as the peak temperature increased. This effect was due to the combined effects of the carbide dissolution and unrestricted grain growth at 1350.deg. C peak temperature. Reheat cracking susceptibility was estimated based on microhardness measurement and prior austenite grain size. It was established that for this particular material, reheat cracking in coarse grained heat affected zone can be eliminated if the microhardness is below about 360DPH and the grain size is below about 30.mu.m. It is evident that reheat cracking susceptibility can be eliminated or reduced by carefully controlling the welding parameters such that a refined structure is produced in the coarse grained heat affected zone.

  • The cold cracking susceptibility of a variety of weld metals deposited by GMAW with several kinds of commercial solid wires for high strength-toughness steel was investigated. G-BOP test and LB-TRC test were carried out to study the effects of preheat, chemical composition and hydrogen level on the weld metal cold cracking. The results obtained are as follows. 1) 10% CPT obtained by G-BOP test was the most valuable criteria for evaluating the cold cracking susceptibility of weld metals compared with percentage of cracking at room temperature and crack free temperature, and it had good correlation with the results of LB-TRC test. 2) Cold cracking susceptibility of weld metals was high in the row of MG100A, MG100C, MG100D and MG100B. Welds deposited with MG130 and MG80 showed similar icidents of cracking with MG100C and MG100B respectively, even though their strength levels were different. 3) Diffusible hydrogen level in weld metals which has good relation with hydrogen content in wire itself was the most critical factor for controlling the cold cracking susceptibility of weld metal.

  • This study investigated the applicability of insulation curing method with double layer bubble sheets to the man concrete subjected to cold weather. Temperature history of the mass concrete indicated that the highest temperature of center section was exhibited at $34^{\circ}C$ while the that of surface section was $25^{\circ}C$. Difference between center and surface was shown to be less $10^{\circ}C$ when the temperature of center section was peak section, and thereby associated temperature cracking index was calculated 1.5, and occurrence probability of temperature cracking was 5%, so there was no temperature cracking caused by internal restraint. No temperature crack was observed by naked eye. It was clear that early frost demage and temperature cracking could be restrained due to reducing temperature difference between inner part and outside in the case double bubble sheets applied to insulation curing method in cold weather. The maturity of mass concrete is higher than outside about $72\sim89^{\circ}$ DD, so it was demonstrated to prevent early frost demage and ensure strength excellently. Insulation curing method with double bubble sheets was more economic than heating curing method.

  • In this study, the property and plastic cracking pattern of concrete were compared and analyzed with the replacement ratio of fly ash 0, 5, 10, 15, 20% by cement weight. And curing conditions of concrete were given variously such as indoors(with wind speed as 0, 300, 500m/min), outdoors and chamber. The hydration temperature had a tendency to decrease as the replacement ratio of fly ash increased, and in the case of the wind speed 0m/min, it was showed that the moment that the amount of evaporation of water from surface of reference concrete was more than the volume of bleeding was 90 min since casting concrete. The time that the crack initiated had a tendency to be more quickly as the replacement ratio of fly ash increased. The number, length, width and area of crack in the indoor curing, exposed outdoor curing, enclosed outdoor curing had a tendency to decrease as the replacement ratio of fly ash increased. The crack had a tendency to decrease in sequence of exposed outdoor, enclosed outdoor curing, indoors curing. The outbreak of cracking by the change of temperature and humidity was affected by relative humidity more than temperature and the cracking had a tendency to increase as relative humidity lowered.

  • One of the biggest problems affecting bridges is the transverse cracking and deterioration of concrete bridge decks. The causes of early age cracking are primarily attributed to plastic shrinkage, temperature effects, autogenous shrinkage, and drying shrinkage. The cracks can be influenced by material characteristics, casting sequence, formwork, climate conditions, geometry, and time dependent factors. The cracking of bridge decks not only creates unsightly aesthetic condition but also greatly reduces durability. It leads to a loss of functionality, loss of stiffness, and ultimately loss of structural safety. This investigation consists of field, laboratory, and analytical phases. The experimental and field testing investigate the early age transverse cracking of bridge decks and evaluate the use of sealant materials. The research identifies suitable materials, for crack sealing, with an ability to span cracks of various widths and to achieve performance criteria such as penetration depth, bond strength, and elongation. This paper also analytically examines the effect of a wide range of parameters on the development of cracking such as the number of spans, the span length, girder spacing, deck thickness, concrete compressive strength, dead load, hydration, temperature, shrinkage, and creep. The importance of each parameter is identified and then evaluated. Also, the AASHTO Standard Specification limits liveload deflections to L/800 for ordinary bridges and L/1000 for bridges in urban areas that are subject to pedestrian use. The deflection is found to be an important parameter to affect cracking. A set of recommendations to limit the transverse deck cracks in bridge decks is also presented.

  • The effect of primary solidification phase on the solidification cracking sensitivity, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the austenitic stainless steel welds. The conclusions were summarized as follows; 1. Soldification crack sensitivity of austenitic stainless steel welds depends on the primary solidification mode. 2. Austenitic stainless steels were very susceptible to solidification cracking in case of solidification as primary ${\gamma}$ and immune when solidified as primary $\delta$. 3. When the ratio of Creq/Nieq is in the range of 1.46 to 1.55, the most resistance against solidification cracking was obtained. These results agreed well with the relationship between primary solidification mode, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature. 4. Optimum toughness, corrosion and solidification cracking resistance can be obtained when alloys having chemical compositions described above and solidifies as primary $\delta$ containing no ferrite at room temperature.
