Droplet evaporation can be used to transfer large amounts of energy since heat is transferred across a thin liquid film. Spreading the drop over a larger area can enhance this heat transfer. One method of accomplishing this is to dissolve gas into the liquid. When the drop strikes the surface, a gas bubble nucleates and can grow and merge within the liquid, resulting in an increase in the droplet diameter. In this study, time and space resolved heat transfer characteristics for a single droplet striking a heated surface were experimentally investigated. The local wall heat flux and temperature measurements were provided by a novel experimental technique in which 96 individually controlled heaters were used to map the heat transfer coefficient contour on the surface. A high-speed digital video camera was used to simultaneously record images of the drop from below. The measurements to date indicate that significantly smaller droplet evaporation times can be achieved. The splat diameter was observed to increase with time just after the initial transient dies out due to the growth of the bubble, in contrast to a monotonically decreasing splat diameter for the case of no bubbles. Bursting of the bubble corresponded to a sudden decrease in droplet heat transfer.

Experiment and three dimensional numerical investigations of incompressible turbulent flow through square channels with one- and two-sided ribbed walls are performed to determine pressure drop and heat transfer. The CFX(version 5.7) software package is used for the computation. The ribbed walls have a $45^{\circ}$ inclined square rib. Uniform heat flux is maintained on whole inner heat transfer channel area. The numerical results coincide with experimental data that obtained for $7,600{\le}Re{\le}24.900$, the pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) of 8.0. and the rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) of 0.0667. The results show that values of local heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the channel with two-sided ribbed wall are higher than those in the channel with one-sided ribbed walls.
This study evaluate the effect of laundering on the deformation of knitted spandex/cotton fabrics compared with that of knitted cotton fabrics. Commercial knitted spandex/cotton and knitted cotton fabrics for T-shits were laundered in a drum-type washing machine and dried in a tumble dryer. Wale spirality, shrinkage, elastic recovery and surface contour of knitted fabrics were investigated under different laundering conditions: washing temperature, presoaking time and washing cycles. Knitted spandex/cotton fabrics had a lower angle of spirality than knitted cotton fabrics. After the first washing cycle, the angles of spirality of all the fabrics had decreased greatly. Knitted cotton fabric of low density deformed more than that of higher density. Knitted spandex/cotton. fabric of low density shrank less, because of the greater extension given during heat-set. Permanent elongation length at the 80$\%$ extension was longer than at the 50$\%$ extension, and the knitted spandex/cotton fabric which was expanded greatly during heat-set had a lower elastic recovery rate. The surface appearance of the knitted spandex/cotton fabrics was worsl~ than that of the knitted cotton fabrics before laundering and after repeated laundering, because of the much protruded cotton fibers from the yarns.
Adult Dungeness crabs are restricted primarily in the lower part of Glacier Bay, Alaska, but the interaction of larval dispersion and adult distribution is unknown. To understand the larval occurrence in the upper part of Glacier Bay, Dungeness crab larvae, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface salinity (SSS) were collected at 16 near-shore and 12 mid-channel stations in Glacier Bay, southeastern Alaska during six sampling periods from March through August 2000. Each station was visited from one to five times during the entire sampling period. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to contour SST and SSS distribution in Glacier Bay. Seven to 27 stations were visited during each sampling period. Most larvae (85% were zoeae I) occurred during May 31 to June 14, 2000. Larval density varied from none to $51.4\;100\;m^{-3}$ between stations. A few later stage larvae occurred during later sampling periods. Overall, no relationship between larval densities, and SSS, and SST existed. Larvae occurring in the upper bay were probably transported by tidal currents from the lower bay; adult Dungeness crabs in Glacier Bay have a relatively high density near the mouth of the bay but decrease sharply around 40km north of the mouth. The lack of adult crabs in the upper 60km of the bay may be related to lower salinity, resulting in sharp haloclines, or colder temperatures which are not conducive to survival or growth of either larvae or adults.
The wear characteristic of Zircaloy-4 tube, which is used for a cladding of light water reactor fuel rod, is investigated experimentally. The experiment is conducted with contacting the crossed tube specimens in air as well as in water at room temperature with various combination of contact normal force and sliding distance of reciprocating motion. The contour and the volume of each wear are examined to study the effect of contact condition and environment on wear. As a result, it is found that the wear volume in the water environment is larger than that in the air for all the contact (i.e., force and sliding distance) conditions. However, the wear depth is greater in air than in water if the contact normal force and the sliding distance are larger. These are explained by the ease of detachment of wear particles from the contact surface. On the other hand, workrate model is applied with the contact shear force range measured by our wear tester. Investigated is the correlation between the workrate and the wear volume increase rate of the present experiment. The parabolic curve is found to fit well for the present wear data.
Numerical analysis is carried out for combined heat transfer in an indirected NIR(Near Infrared Ray) heating chamber. Reynolds number and shapes of absorbed cylinder are known as important parameters on the combined heat transfer effects. Reynolds number based on the outer diameter of the cylinder is varied from $10^3$ to $3{\times}10^5$. Four difference heat transfer regimes are observed: forced convection and radiative heat transfer on the outer surface of the cylinder, pure conduction in the cylinder body, pure natural convection and radiation between lamp surface and inner surface of the cylinder, and radiation from the lamp. Flow and temperature characteristics are presented with iso-contour lines for the absorbed circular and elliptic cylinders to compare their differences. The convective and radiative heat transfer fluxes are also compared with different Reynolds numbers. As usual, Reynolds number is an important factor to estimate increasing convective heat transfer as it increases. The shape of absorbed cylinder results overall heat transfer rates remain unchanged.
Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) is essential in the design of hydraulic structures such as dams, weirs and flood control structures. Up to the present, PMP has been derived from any proper single storm which can have a large error. PMP values should be evaluated from many historic heavy storm events from all over the country. Since this can be done at the spots of storm occurring and the calculated PMP from all spots in the country can be correlated. The objectives of this study are therefore to evaluate PMP from historic heavy storm data from 1972 to 2000 by using meteorological method, then to correlate and to present the results using GIS. The maximized rainfall depths can be calculate from depth of heavy rainfall and dew point temperature, and then can be analyzed for each rainfall duration to obtain spatial rainfall distribution by using GIS. The depth-area-duration relationship of maximized rainfall can be obtained and this helps to develop enveloped curves . The results from this study are a set of contour maps of PMP for each rainfall duration for all over the country and the depth-area-duration relationships for the area of 100 to 50,000 km.$^{2}$ at duration of 1, 2 and 3 days.
To study the influence of the shape of contacting bodies (especially the end profile) on slip regime, wear test is conducted in the case of the contact between tube and support. Two different end profiles of the support are used such as truncated wedge and rounded punch. During the test, 10, 30 and 50 N are applied as normal force and slip displacement varies between 10-200 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The tube and the support specimens are made of Zircaloy-4 and a specially designed wear tester is used. Tests are carried out in air at room temperature. Wear on the tube is examined by measuring microscope. Partial and gross slip regimes are classified from the observed wear shape. Surface roughness tester is also used to measure the wear depth and contour, from which wear volume is evaluated. The transition from partial to gross slip is also investigated by investigating the considerable increase of wear volume. From the result, the boundary between the partial and the gross slip is newly determined in the conventional fretting map for the present specific contact configuration. Since the transition is related with the amount of energy dissipation from the contact surface so is wear, it is regarded that wear can be restrained by designing a proper shape of support.
The superconducting property measurement system is used to acquire electrical and thermal properties on short HTS tape samples and the system is composed of specimen holder for mounting HTS tape and a magnet for applying magnetic fields externally. The magnet consists of two split racetrack windings and is designed to produce maximum 3T of center field. The temperature of specimen holder can be varied in range from 10K to 77K. The field homogeneity is required less than 300 gauss stray field contour within 20cm axially and 3cm radially from origin. We have worked on the conceptual designs of the conduction-cooled magnet for the superconducting characteristic measurement system. The measurement system will be fabricated in near future based on the design parameters presented in this paper.
