  • The bryophyte communities on the forest floor of the mixed coniferous and deciduous broad-leaf forest and the evergreen coniferous forest of cool temperate and subalpine zones in Mts. Taebaek, Odae and Sulak of Tabaek Range were investigated from. the numerical and phytosociological viewpoints. As a result, four bryophyte communities were recognized there, considering the species composition of vascular vegetation; A. Thuja koraiensis-Abies nephrolepis/Taxus caespitosa-Pinus pumila/Hylocomium splendens-Pleurozium schreberi community, B: Sasamorpha borealis-Abies nephrolepis/Plagiomnium cuspidatum- Aulacomnium heterostichum community, C. Abies holophylla-Abies nephrolepis/Thuidium recognitum-Trachycystis immarginata cristatus community, D. Meehania urticifolia-Abies nephrolepis/Hylocomiopsis ovicarpa-Taxiphyllum aomoriense community. Among these, the community A was distributed in higher altitudes and characterized by the species group of the holarctic elements, e.g. Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, Dicranum majus, etc. limited in subarctic; subalpine and arctic; alpine zones and was confirmed as synusies of the Thujo-Abietetum nephrolepidis Song 1991 and Taxo-Pinetum pumilae Song 1985 belonging the Vaccinio-Piceetea Br.-Bl. 1939. In contrast the communities B, C and D were distributed in the mixed coniferous and deciduous broad-leaf forest of lower altitudes and characterized by the elements of the cool temperate; montane zone. They were confirmed as synusies belonging to the Corylo-Quercetum mongolicae Song 1988. By the result of the numerical syntaxonomical analysis such as cluster analysis, interspecific association, PCA, the communities were largely divided into the two types. The two types coincided with the community units or the diagnostic species of the bryophyte communities of the subalpine zone and the montane zone, respectively. Also the analysis revealed that the division of the above two forest zones are justifiable. Up to date many investigator have described the coniferous forest distibuted above 1000m in Taebaek mountains as the forest vegetation of subalpine zone. However, from the results of the present study, the boundary of the mixed forest and the true subalpine coniferous forest was elucidated to be ca. 1,500 m phytosociologically. Species richness was the highest in the community A, and the other four communities showed a similar species richness.

  • The Quaternary palynoflora from Cheongsu core, drilled on the western part of the Jeju Island, consists mainly of deciduous broad-leaved angiosperms and herbs. Dominant taxa are Pinaceae, Alnus, Castanea/Castanopsis, Ulmus/Zelkova, Chenopodiaceae and Compositae. Based on palynofloral composition, two palynostratigraphic zones are recognized. Zone I is characterized by a predominance of Alnus and Chenopodiaceae, and by the abundance of herbs. Zone II is dominated by conifers and deciduous broad-leaved angiosperms, including Abies, Taxodiaceae-Cupressaceae-Taxaceae, Ulmus/Zelkova and Gramineae. The Cheongsu palynoflora can be correlated with Alnipollenites(Alnus)-Chenopodipollis(Chenopodiaceae)-Compositae Assemblage Zone of the East China Sea and is assigned to the Pleistocene in age. Ecology of main taxa and comparison with the present vegetation of Korea suggest a cool temperate climate and a low relief in the Jeju Island during the deposition of the Cheongsu core sediments.

  • Kinetic properties of typsins purified from dark-fleshed fish (anchovy, mackerel, yellowfin tuna, and albacore) were examined and analyzed on $benzoyl-_{D,L}-arginine-p-nitroanilide\;(BAPNA)$. The values of Km' and $k_{cat}$ of the purified trypsins from the four dark-fleshed fish were found to be $49.3{\mu}M$ and $90.9\;min^{-1}$ for anchovy, $53.7{\mu}M$ and $61.2min-^{-1}$ for mackerel A, $96.5{\mu}M$ and $76.6min^{-1}$ for mackerel B, $62.8{\mu}M$ and $46.6min^{-1}$ for yellowfin tuna, and $98.3{\mu}M$ and $47.7min^{-1}$ for albacore, respectively. The values of $K_i$ on $tosyl-_L-lysine$ chloromethyl ketone (TLCK) were determined to be $20.90{\mu}M$ for anchovy trypsin, $2.86{\mu}M$ for mackerel trypsin A, $3.90{\mu}M$ for mackerel trypsin B, $0.96{\mu}M$ for yellowfin tuna trypsin, and $1.82{\mu}M$ for albacore trypsin. Thus yellowfin tuna trypsin was the most sensitive to TLCK among all trypsins. The activities and catalytic efficiency of the trypsins purified from the temperate zone fish, anchovy and mackerel, were higher than those of the trypsins purified from yellowfin tuna and albacore which migrate widely from the tropic zone to the temperate zone.

  • With rapid climate change and increasing global warming, the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees (EBLTs) is gradually expanding to the inland regions of Korea. The aim of the present study was to analyze the survival rate of 148 EBLT plantations measuring 180 ha and to determine the optimal plantation size that would help in coping with climate change in the warm, temperate climate zone of the Korean peninsula. For enhancing the reliability of our estimated survival model, we selected a set of 11 control variables that may have also influenced the survival rates of the EBLTs in the 148 plantations. The results of partial correlation analysis showed that the survival rate of 67.0±26.9 of the EBLTs in the initial plantation year was primarily correlated with plantation type by the crown closure of the upper story of the forest, wind exposure, and precipitation. For predicting the probability of survival by quantification theory, 148 plots were surveyed and analyzed with 11 environmental site factors. Survival rate was in the order of plantation type by the crown closure of upper story of the forest, wind exposure, total cumulative precipitation for two weeks prior to planting, and slope stiffness in the descending order of score range in the estimated survival model for the EBLTs with the fact that survival rate increased with shade rate of upper story to some extent.

  • We carried out pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating from sediments of Wangdeungjae moor (960 m a.s.l.) to clarify vegetation history of temperate broad-leaved deciduous forest zone of Mt. Jiri. Three local pollen zones and two sub-zones were recognized on the basis of variation in the palynofloral assemblage: I. Quercus zone (150-114 cm), II. Quercus-Pinus zone (114-43 cm): IIa. Quercus-Pinus subzone (114-83 cm), IIb. Quercus-Pinus-Herbs subzone (83-43 cm), III. Pinus-Quercus zone (43-27 cm). Radiocarbon date from sediment depth 111-116 cm was estimated $1,160{\pm}40yr$ B.P. From these results, overall vegetation around of Wangdeungjae moor and Mt. Jiri have changed from Q. mongolica dominant to steady decrease of Q. mongolica whereas steady increase of P. densiflora, finally abrupt increase of P. densiflora. 'Medieval Warm Period (MWP)' and 'Little Ice Age (LIA)' have not had an effect on change of vegetation around, at least, Mt. Jiri. But at maximum period of LIA, extension of grassland and steady increase of Pinus were recognized around the moor. After then, an abrupt increase of Pinus is supposed that vegetation change is reflected in human impact surging around foothills.

  • This study was carried out from June 1996 to November 1997 to analyze the growth characteristics of the introduced species revegetated on highway cut-slopes. The number of revegetation measures type surveyed were fourteen such as seed-spraying measures, block-sod pitching measures, and hydro-seeding measures with seed-fertilizer-soil materials. The introduced species for revegetation measures were mostly Festuca arundinancea(cool season grass), Eragrostic curvula(warm season grass), Lolium perenne(cool season grass), Dactylis glomerata(cool season grass), Poa pratensia(cool season grass). The species diversity index of the upper part on highway cut-slopes were greater than that of the middle part and lower part. The growth of introduced species was good on north-facing cut-slope than the others and that was flourish in temperate north forest zone. Also, the introduced species seemed to decrease or disappear, while the ratio of native woody and herb species which were in mature stage seemed to increase.

  • With the cultivated mulberry plant which feeds silkworm on its leaves in sericulture, the measuring methods of biomass of terrestrial organs were compared and the annual net productivity was estimated. The measurement of the standing crops by means of allometric method on basis of relation between the parameter D230H, square of the diameter of the branch on 30cm high above ground($D{\frac}{2}{30}$) multiplied by its height(H), and the amount of leaves(WL) or of branch (Ws) was more accurate than other methods on basis of correlation between a character of the branch such as H, D30 or D230 and WL or Ws. The estimate of value of the net productivity of terrestrial parts of mulberry was 9.06-12.54 ton/ha.year, which was similar to that obtained from secondary forests in cool temperate zone.

  • The distribution and population densities of yeasts including their epiflora on seaweeds were estimated over two months in inshore waters of Mok-po, Korea. Nine species of 48 isolates were obtained from this area. Rhodotorula, Torulopsis and Debaryomyces that are widespread in estuaries were of common occurrence in this water body. The highest counts belonged to Torulopsis candida which was predominated in temperate estuarine zone. The distribution of sea weeds seems to be correlated with the population densities of yeasts. Two species of marine algae harbored yeasts during May and July, 1975. Among seaweeds isolates, the highest numbers werre of the species Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis. A dominant colonization of this strain on Chlorophyceae and Phaeophyta and a role of water temperature for the growth of yeasts are discussed.
