A Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) is the payload of KOMPSAT-2 which is designed for earth imaging in visible and near-Infrared region on a sun-synchronous orbit. The telescope in the MSC is a Ritchey-Chretien type with large aperture. The telescope structure should be well stabilized and the optical alignment should be kept steady so that best images can be achieved. However, the MSC is exposed to adverse thermal environment on the orbit which can give impacts on optical performance. Metering structure which is exposed to adverse space environment should have tight requirement of low thermal expansion and hygroscopic stability. In order to meet those stability requirements in addition to fundamental structural ones telescope structure was designed with newly developed graphite-cyanate composite which has high tensile modulus, high thermal conductivity and low moisture absorption compared with conventional graphite-epoxy composite. In this paper, space-borne telescope structure with new composite material will be presented and fulfillment of stability requirements will be verified with designed structure.
We plan to automatize the operation of Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory (KHAO) 76 cm Telescope by adapting KAOS30 (KHU Automatic Observing Software for McDonald 30 inch Telescope). The software is developed to improve the efficiency of the observation system for monitoring transients and variable sources. It has installed and operated at McDonald 30 inch telescope since 2017 August. KAOS76 (KHU Automatic Observing Software for KHAO 76 cm Telescope) consists of four packages: Telescope Control Package (TCP), Data Acquisition Package (DAP), Auto Focus Package (AFP), and Script Mode Package (SMP). Most of the packages can be configured by minimized modifications of the codes because it includes common libraries for FLI instruments and also ASCOM standard. TCP, DAP, and AFP control astronomical devices. SMP supports automatic observing in a script mode. TCP of KAOS76 can communicate with the TCS via ASCOM. Also, KAOS76 has an extra function to compensate the misalignment of the polar axis. In this poster, we show the current status of the observing system with KAOS76.
An off-axis telescope has several advantages in optical performance comparing with a conventional on-axis telescope. However, in general, an off-axis telescope has a narrow field of view due to the linear astigmatism caused by the asymmetric structure. It was shown in the previous work that the linear astigmatism can be eliminated by properly configuring parameters in a confocal off-axis reflector system. Furthermore, the third order aberrations of a confocal off-axis telescope can be minimized by optimizing the shape of the mirrors. Despite many advantages, the confocal off-axis telescopes have been evaded because of difficulties of off-axis mirror fabrication, alignment process and unaccustomed off-axis baffle design. The baffle for the off-axis telescope should be designed considering that the effects of stray lights are different because of the asymmetry of off-axis system. In this poster, the design, manufacturing, and test for the baffle and housing of an off-axis telescope are presented.
An off-axis four-mirror-anastigmatic telescope is presented here which is composed of two aspheric surfaces and two spherical surfaces. The entrance pupil diameter is 290 mm and the stop is located at the primary mirror. The effective focal length is 900 mm. The strip field of view for the telescope is $15^{\circ}{\times}0.2^{\circ}$ and if the telescope is launched into an orbit about 400 km altitude, the observed range width will be more than 105 km within a scene without any other auxiliary scanning instrument. The spectral range can be as wide as from visual wave band to infrared wave band in the mirror system. This telescope can be used for environmental monitoring with different detectors whose pixel is adapted to the optical resolution. In this paper, the spectral range is chosen as 3.0 -5.0 ${\mu}m$, and center distance of the pixel is 30 ${\mu}m$. And the image quality is near the diffraction limit.

The 76 cm telescope in Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory is participating in the small telescope network of the SomangNet project, which started in 2020. Since the installation of the telescope in 1992, the system configuration has been changed several times. The optical system of this telescope has a Ritchey-Chrétien configuration with 76 cm in diameter and the focal ratio is f/7. The mount is a single fork equatorial type and its control system is operated by TheSkyX software. We use a science camera with a 4k × 4k CCD and standard Johnson-Cousins UBVRI filters, which cover a field of view of 23.7 × 23.7 arcmin. We are also developing the Kyung Hee Automatic Observing Software for the 76 cm telescope (KAOS76) for efficient operations. In this work, we present the standard star calibration results, the current status of the system, and the expected science capabilities.
The SMT is a subsystem of the UFFO (Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory) pathfinder onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft planed to be launched in November 2011. The UFFO is designed for extremely fast observation of optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB). This study is primarily concerned with performance measurement of the SMT optical system under the integration and test phase. SMT is a 100mm Ritchey-Chretien type telescope with a motorized slewing mirror and a $256{\times}256$ pixels Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD) of 22.2${\mu}m$ in pixel size. SMT is designed to operate over the wavelength coverage between 200 nm and 650 nm. It has 17 arcmin FOV (Field of View), providing 4arcsec in detector pixel resolution. In this study, we describe the integration and test process of the SMT optical system and interim performance measurement results with motorized slewing mirror and ICCD.
McDonald 2.1m Otto Struve Telescope is located in the Davis Mountains, 450 miles west of Austin, Texas. The telescope was built in 1938, but it is still in demand today. CQUEAN (Camera for QUasar in Early uNiverse) will be attached on this telescope and perform Y-band imaging observations. Dynamics study of the telescope shows that tracking errors are 0.1 arcsec/100sec in declination direction and 0.4 arcsec/100sec in R.A. direction. In order to allow a long exposure (> a few minutes) of a target field, we are making auto-guiding system for the 2.1m telescope. The auto-guiding system of CQUEAN will be connected with TCS of the telescope. The expected number of stars on the CCD field (2.97 square arcminutes) is about 1.2 stars which are brighter than magnitude 17.5 in 2.97 square arcminutes. For more effective observation, we plan to implement moving mechanism in guiding system so that guide CCD camera can see wider off-axis fields.
A small wide-field imaging telescope is a powerful instrument to survey the Universe: wide-field image can monitor the variability of many sources at a time, e.g. young stellar objects and active galactic nuclei, and it can be an effective way to locate transient sources without precise positional information such as gravitational wave sources or some gamma-ray bursts. In February 2017, we installed a 0.25 m f/3.6 telescope on the McDonald 0.8 m telescope as a piggyback system. With a $4k{\times}4k$ CCD camera, the telescope has a $2.35{\times}2.35deg$ field-of-view. Currently, it is equipped with Johnson UBVRI filters and 3 narrow-band filters: $H{\alpha}$, OIII and SII. We will present the installation process, and the telescope performance such as detection limit and image quality based on the data from commissioning observations. We will also discuss possible scientific projects with this system.

We develop a proto-model of an off-axis reflective telescope for infrared wide-field observations based on the design of Schwarzschild-Chang type telescope. With only two mirrors, this design achieves an entrance pupil diameter of 50 mm and an effective focal length of 100 mm. We can apply this design to a mid-infrared telescope with a field of view of $8^{\circ}{\times}8^{\circ}$. In spite of the substantial advantages of off-axis telescopes in the infrared compared to refractive or on-axis reflective telescopes, it is known to be difficult to align the mirrors in off-axis systems because of their asymmetric structures. Off-axis mirrors of our telescope are manufactured at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI). We analyze the fabricated mirror surfaces by fitting polynomial functions to the measured data. We accomplish alignment of this two-mirror off-axis system using a ray tracing method. A simple imaging test is performed to compare a pinhole image with a simulated prediction.
