Performance characteristics of single cell in phosphoric acid fuel cell were studied for various electrode fabrication parameters such as teflon content, electrode structure, thickness of electrocatalyst layer, platinum content and electrode area. The performance of single cell was decided from the measured voltage-current through a load change. The electrode of 40wt.% teflon exhibited high initial performance of single cell, but in the long term operation, the cell performance of 45 wt.% teflon was better. Also the single cell appeared good performance in case of electrodes with duplicate structure, thin electrocatalyst in thickness, more platinum content, and small area. These results of cell performance were discussed as related to the electrolyte flooding, formation of 3 phase boundary area, internal resistance of electrode, and microstructure of electrode.
Electrochemical properties of the oxygen electrode in phosphoric acid fuel cell have been studied using AC impedance method as a function of applied potential, operating temperature and teflon content in the electrode. The oxygen electrode reaction in the $105wt.\%$ phosphoric acid is characterized by a parallel resistive component, $R_p$ and a capacitive component, $C_p$ with serial electrolyte resistance, $R_s$. The conductivity of the phosphoric acid is found to be 0.31-0.47 S/cm in the range of $130\;to\;190^{\circ}C$ from the measured impedance. The increase of applied potential and temperature produced the decreased RP and the increased $C_p$, which means the increase of the oxygen electrode reaction rate. The single cells with the cathode of various teflon contents were tested, and the cathode with $40wt.\%$ teflon showed good performance, which is considered to be related to an optimized impedance behavior.

Portable-type two electrode system for the determination of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide (10-75%) has been studied. The electrode body was made with teflon rod (length=10 cm, diameter=1.5 cm) to withstand the highly corrosive power of hydrogen peroxide. Glass carbon rod (diameter=3 mm) was used as the working electrode and a carbon cylinder (i.d.=5 mm; o.d.=9 mm) was used as counter electrode. The applied voltage for the determination of $H_2O_2$ was 0.8 V. Diluting the highly concentrated samples taken from the industrial batch to 10% or less, it was possible to make quantitative determinations, while eliminating the interference from the stabilizer contained in the sample and preventing the surface of the electrode from oxidative corrosion. Employing hydrogen peroxide permeable membrane (teflon membrane${\leq}100{\mu}m$) for the electrode system, it was possible to measure the content of $H_2O_2$ in highly concentrated samples directly, quantitatively and reproducibly with no extra dilution step. However, it was necessary to change the internal electrolyte frequently to maintain the analytical performance of the electrode.
A cylindrical ultraviolet (UV) sterilization system was developed for decreasing microorganisms in takju. The takju was passed through 110 strips of honeycomb-type teflon tubing with 9 UV lamps (1,395 W) set between the teflon tubes. Thus, during passage, the takju was effectively exposed to the UV rays without loss. In terms of the overall quality aspects of the takju, the optimum sterilization condition was set for 4 min at 2 L/min. A 2-3 log cycle decrease in viable cell numbers of total bacteria and fungi was observed at this operating condition. Quality changes in the UV-sterilized takju were examined via UV irradiation of samples followed by storage at 30oC for 8 days. To evaluate the quality changes, pH, amino nitrogen content, acidity, reducing sugar content, and viable cell numbers of total bacteria and fungi were measured. Increases in pH, acidity, and amino nitrogen content were observed in both the takju control and UV sterilized takju with increasing storage time. However, reducing sugar content was decreased in both samples. The L, a, and b values of the control takju and UV sterilized takju showed similar trends over the storage period. Viable cell numbers of fungi did not change in the control or UV sterilized takju during storage, showing approximately $10^8\;CFU/mL$ and $10^4-10^5\;CFU/mL$, respectively. In addition, viable cell numbers of total bacteria remained lower in the UV sterilized takju over 4 days compared to the non-sterilized takju.

A cylindrical UV sterilization system was developed to decrease microorganisms in centrifuged Takju (CT). CT was run through 110 strips of honey comb type-teflon tubes and 9 UV lamps (1395 W) were equipped between teflon tubes. The optimum sterilization condition of CT was fixed for 1.5 min at 2 L/min in overall quality aspects; also, 5~6 log cycle decrease of viable cell numbers of total bacteria and yeast was observed at this operating condition. Quality changes of UV-sterilized CT were examined by UV irradiation of CT followed by storing at $30^{\circ}C$ for 8 days. To evaluate quality changes of UV-sterilized CT, pH, amino nitrogen content, acidity, reducing sugar content and viable cell numbers of total bacteria and yeast were measured. The growth of yeast and bacteria was retarded, showing around $10^8\;CFU/mL$ even after 4 days and $10^8\;CFU/mL$ after 6 days, respectively. Also, UV sterilized CT showed no changes in pH, titratable acidity, and amino nitrogen content during storage except reducing sugar content. UV sterilization did not cause significant difference in L, a, and b values between CT and UV-sterilized CT over the storage period.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the contents of the residual monomers, such as Bis-GMA and TEGDMA. In this study, materials used were six kinds of anterior and posterior visible light-cured resins. Resins were placed in disk-shaped Teflon mold (8.5mm in diameter, 2.0mm in thickness), and cured for 20 seconds with visible light source attached wide diameter lightguide. The specimens were immersed in 10ml ethanol and stored for 5 days at $37^{\circ}C$. The concentration of residual monomers in eluate solution was analysed by HPLC, and the following results are obtained. 1. The residual Bis-GMA and TEGDMA were detected in all materials used, and the ranges of quantity of the residual Bis-GMA was 0.101-1.236 wt% and that of TEGDMA was 0.230-5.794 wt%.2. The contents of residual TEGDMA was detected higher than that of residual Bis-GMA (P < 0.01). 3. The content of residual monomers was detected to be highest in Bis-Fil M as microfilled type. 4. In most of the materials used, there was no significant difference in the contents of residual monomers between anterior and posterior light-cured resins.

Objectives: To evaluate the polymerization efficiency of a matrix-modified bulk-fill composite, and compare it to a conventional composite which has a similar filler system. The degree of conversion (DC%) and monomer elution were measured over different storage periods. Additionally, fillers' content was examined. Materials and Methods: Cylindrical specimens were prepared, in bulk and incrementally, from Filtek Bulk Fill (B) and Filtek Supreme XTE (S) composites using a Teflon mold, for each test (n = 6). Using attenuated total reflection method of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, DC% was measured after 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, elution of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, urethane dimethacrylate, and bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate was measured after 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days. Filler content was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed using 2-way mixed-model analysis of variance (α = 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference in DC% over different storage periods between B-bulk and S-incremental. Higher monomer elution was detected significantly from S than B. The elution quantity and rate varied significantly over storage periods and between different monomers. SEM images showed differences in fillers' sizes and agglomeration between both materials. Conclusions: Matrix-modified bulk-fill composites could be packed and cured in bulk with polymerization efficiency similar to conventional composites.
For the application of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), sulfonated polystyrene/teflon (PS/PTFE) composite membranes were developed by changing monomer ratio of styrene and DVB. The composite membranes were prepared as follows: first, the monomer mixtures consisting of styrene, divinyl benzene and AIBN were impregnated in porous PTFE film and then, polymerized under 8$0^{\circ}C$ to give PS/PTFE membranes. Finally, the membranes were reacted with chlorosulfonic acid in 1,2-dichloroethane to give the sulfonated composite membranes. The measurements of ATR-FTIR, SEM, solvent uptake test and ion exchange capacity (IEC) were done for the resulting membranes before or after sulfonation, respectively, which showed the composite membranes with proper crosslinking degree and sulfonic acid content were prepared well as a function of styrene/DVB ratio. ion conductivity and methanol permeability were studied for the sulfonated membranes. It was found that with decreasing the ratio of styrene/DVB, methanol permeability decreased from $6.6{\times}10^{-7}∼1.3{\timas}10^{-7}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/s, which are much lower values than that of Nafion$^{(R)}$117($1.02{\times}10^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/s). Under the same monomer condition, ion conductivity decreased from 0.11 S/cm ($25^{\circ}C$) to 0.08 S/cm ($25^{\circ}C$), which are similar or a little higher values compared with $Nafion^{(R)}117 (1.02{\times}10^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/s, 0.0824 S/cm). These two results confirmed the composite membranes prepared could be applied successfully to DMFC.C.
A capacitive water sensor was developed to measure the capacitance over a wide part of a substrate using an insulated electrode plate (30 cm × 10 cm) with copper and Teflon attached on either side of the substrate. This study aimed to convert the capacitance output obtained from the condenser-type capacitance sensor into the substrate water content. The quantification experiment was performed by measuring the changes in substrate water weight and capacitance while providing a nutrient solution and by subsequently comparing these values. The substrate water weight and capacitance were measured every 20 to 30 seconds using the sensor and load cell with a software developed specifically for this study. Using a curve-fitting program, the substrate water content was estimated from the output of the capacitance using the water weight and capacitance of the substrate as variables. When the amount of water supplied was increased, the capacitance tended to increase. Coefficient of variation (CV) in capacitance according to the water weight in substrate was greater with the 1.0 kg of water weight, compared with other weights. Thus, the fitting was performed with higher than 1.0 kg, from 1.7 to 6.0 kg of water weight. The correlation coefficient between the capacitance and water weight in substrate was 0.9696. The calibration equation estimated water content from the capacitance, and it was compared with the substrate water weight measured by the load cell.
