Stability deterioration of AKD emulsion was studied with respect of the physical change of emulsion particles and the chemical change of AKD itself. Four kinds of commercial emulsions were kept at RT, 40, 50, and $60^{\circ}C$ water bath, respectively. Viscosity, particle size distribution, and solid contents of the emulsions were measured with storage time. At the same time, by performing NMR and IR spectroscopy analysis of the solvent-extracted AKD from the emulsions, the qualitative and quantitative information about the deformation of the AKD itself were obtained. AKD was gradually hydrolyzed to become dialkylketone and higher storage temperature accelerated destabilization of the AKD emulsions.
For a fundamental study for high concentration pigment coating, the effects of alkali swellable emulsion (ASE) type rheology modifier and surface adsorption emulsion (SAE) type rheology modifier on both the stability and the viscoelastic behavior of a coating color were elucidated. The coating color prepared with SAE type rheology modifier showed superior thermal and mechanical stability than that with ASE type. In the high concentration and high speed coating process, the mechanical stability of a coating color was a key parameter since both impact force and shear force were increased with the increase of coating color concentration and coating speed, respectively.
In the coarse grained HAZ of conventional TiN steel, most TiN particles are dissolved and austenite grain growth easily occurrs during high heat input welding. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particles is improved by increasing nitrogen content in EH36-TM steel. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing austenite grain growth by the pinning effect. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of high heat input welded Tandem EGW joint in EH36-TM steel with high nitrogen content were investigated. The austenite grain size in simulated HAZ of the steel at $1400^{\circ}C$ was much smaller than that of conventional TiN steel. Even for high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grained HAZ consisted of fine ferrite and pearlite and the mechanical properties of the joint were sufficient to meet all the requirements specified in classification rule.
The collapse of cut slope near national roads in Korea mostly occurs in every summer when typhoon or localized heavy rain comes. Such collapse brings about a loss of many lives and property and recently the damage is on rapidly increasing trend. Therefore, we may reduce the loss of many lives and property in great deals if we can predict and prepare for the collapse of cut slope. However, it is not easy to predict collapse because there are many factors causing collapse in combination and all they have different levels of contribution. Therefore, this study completed prediction formula by using a statistic technique for quantitative analysis on the interaction of those factors so as to predict the stability of slopes. Consequently, it is judged that effective slope management will be possible by selecting dangerous slopes quantitatively among cut slopes near national roads and by preparing for the collapse in advance.
At present research on mining backfill materials is being carried out to prevent ground subsidence and breaking by underground cavern of exhausted mines. However, backfill materials can cause secondary environmental issues such as ground pollution. To solve these issues, liner and cover materials are constructed before backfill materials constructed, to inhibit toxic substances form moving to the surroundings. Liner and cover materials, however, should have an accelerating performance after construction and when the accelerating performance is degraded, the work efficiency can be lowered, and the construction cost can be increased, by many rebound content. Therefore, this study develops mining liner and cover materials, and evaluates their accelerating performance and physical properties of liner and cover materials by types and content of accelerating agent. In case of aluminate accelerating agent, it is mixed with more than 5% of liner and cover materials(binder/ratio); thus an accelerating performance satisfying Korean Industrial Standards(KS) occurs, and in case of alkali-free accelerating agent, when it is mixed with more than 7%(binder/ratio), accelerating performance satisfying KS occurs. The more the accelerating agent capacity increases, the more compressive strength decreases. In addition, it is confirmed that compressive strength of aluminate accelerating agent is more degraded than compressive strength of the alkali-free accelerating agent. It is also confirmed that drying shrinkage stability of the alkali-free accelerating agent is better than the drying shrinkage stability of the aluminate accelerating agent.

A review of the 2nd generation of intact stability by the International Maritime Organization is performed. The main issues with the new stability criteria are reviewed. In particular, the physical background and related mathematical formulations of the pure loss of stability and parametric roll are summarized. Based on a literature review, benchmark calculation results for 17 different types of ships are discussed, and the final results are in excellent agreement with our physical expectations. Some relatively serious design problems are found in the application of the new stability criteria to sample ships built in Korea, and possible technical solutions are proposed, which have to be improved in the coming years.
This paper studies the effect of saturation of backfill on the seismic stability of reinforced soil walls (RSWs) using centrifuge shaking table tests. For comparison, degradation of static stability and seismic stability of a RSW under unsaturated condition was also investigated. Test results showed that the RSW under saturated condition had enough static stability. However, seismic stability of saturated RSW significantly decreased as compared with that under unsaturated condition. The saturated model RSW did not collapse, though it showed large deformation. It maintained sufficient stability after shakings although a clear slip surface appeared in the backfill. Finally, it is discussed how to evaluate residual stability of RSWs damaged by earthquakes with test results and the simple evaluation method proposed by authors.
In this study, the beeswax extraction methods using organic solvents were examined to develop a optimal dewaxing technology for beeswax-treated Hanji. Thermally-aged beeswax-treated Hanji was dewaxed using four types of extraction methods including dipping, Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic washing and shaking methods. Then, the aging stability of the dewaxed Hanji was evaluated in terms of variations in paper strength and in the color of the printed area with muk. The experimental results suggested that the dewaxing methods allowing solvent to flow during extraction showed superior extraction efficiency. The dipping method in which the organic solvent does not flow showed the slowest extraction rate of beeswax compared to three other methods. In terms of variations in tensile strength and folding endurance, however, no obvious differences in the aging stability were observed amongst these four extraction methods. Regarding the aging stability in terms of the color of the printed area with muk, Soxhlet extraction method showed the best performance of dewaxing.
The adsorption of co-cationic dual polymer system was investigated as was the fiber dispersion stability of a paper stock suspension. Polyaluminum chloride(PAC) and polyamidoamine epichlorohy-drin(PAE) polymers were used as wet-end additives. The adsorbed amounts of PAE polymer in a wet stock were measured by using polyelectrolytic PCD titration. The sheet forming experiments were carried out in a standard handsheet machine. Fiber dispersion stability and relative retention were evaluated in terms of M/K non-uniformity index and sheet basis weight, respectively. The PAE polymer adsorption of Langmuir-isothermal type decreased with increasing PAC addition level. The combination of the two cationic polymers presumably exerts a site-blocking effect by the low molecular weight PAC which gives a partial charge neutralization at a minimum level of addition. From a thermodynamic view point of PAE adsorption, an increase in adsorption entropy and a decrease in train number suggests that the PAR polymer has an extended conformation structure that potentially leads to an enhancement of the fiber dispersion stability. This conclusion is supported by handsheet experiments that examined the PAC-PAE dual polymer effects on the sheet formation and retention.
