Development of large bore superconducting magnet for wastewater treatment application

  • Water issue, especially water pollution, is a serious issue of 21st century. Being an significant technique for securing water resources, superconducting magnetic separation wastewater system was indispensable. A large bore conduction-cooled magnet was custom-tailored for wastewater treatment. The superconducting magnet has been designed, fabricated and tested. The superconducting magnet was composed of NbTi solenoid coils with an effective horizontal warm bore of 400 mm and a maximum central field of 2.56T. The superconducting magnet system was cooled by a two-stage 1.5W 4K GM cryocooler. The NbTi solenoid coils were wound around an aluminum former that is thermally connected to the second stage cold head of the cryocooler through a conductive copper link. The temperature distribution along the conductive link was measured during the cool-down process as well as at steady state. The magnet was cooled down to 4.8K in approximately 65 hours. The test of the magnetic field and quench analysis has been performed to verify the safe operation for the magnet system. Experimental results show that the superconducting magnet reached the designed magnetic performance.

  • Even though the TFT-LCD industry gained enough momentum that has been built up in past 10 years, the industry faces new challenges in order to maintain the 'true mainstream display' position in near future. The technical challenges can be summarized in two fold; one is image quality upgrade for different application area. Cost competitiveness is the other big issue in LCD for the continued leadership position in display industry.   • Hands-on education and training is a key part of fixing and developing technology knowledge and is an inherent part of many engineering and scientific curricula. However, access to large complex training facilities, such as nuclear reactor, could be limited by various factors, such as unavailability of those facilities in the region, high traveling costs or harmonization of the schedules of hands-on E&T with theoretical lectures and with the operational schedule of the facility. To handle the issue, several success stories have been reached with the introduction of the Internet Reactor Labs (IRL). The Internet Reactor Labs can strongly contribute to accessibility of training at research reactors and can contribute to improvements in their utilization. The paper describes the development of the Internet Reactor Lab at the VR-1 reactor of the Czech Technical University in Prague. Contrary to single-purpose IRLs, it presents various modalities of online teaching and training in experimental reactor physics and reactor operation in general as well as outreach activities that have been developed in recent years.

  • In rough seas, water breaker of the sea-going ships is subject to high impact loads due to the green water and some ships' water breaker suffers structure damage. So, a substantial research on the structural response caused by green water impact is required. In this paper, the green water flow on bow deck is simulated by FDM(finite differential method). Using the results of green water simulation, impact loads on water breaker are calculated. Calculation results of the 6200TEU container ship's structural response to this green water impact pressure are shown and discussed for two condiered calculation conditions.

  • In general, the strength assessment for heavy lift vessel is carried out under two stages. The first stage is to comply with the requirement of KR (Korean Register of Shipping) Steel Barges and Rules for Classification of Steel Ships. At the second stage, the structural strength analysis by Finite Element Method is peformed. This paper describes the strength assessment considering various loads for the heavy lift vessel of sheerleg type.

  • 최근 반도체 개발 및 제조부문에서는 급속도로 성장한 Mobile 시장과 Digital Consumer Trend 에 주도적으로 대응하고자 빠른 속도의 기술적 변화를 추진하여 왔으며, 이에 따라 현장에서 발생하는 기술적 문제의 유형 또한 점점 복잡 다양해지고 있다. 기존 Commodity 제품의 경우, 세대 전환이 느리게 진행되어, 이에 수반되는 기술적 문제의 난이도와 그 발생 종류가 현재 대비 상대적으로 단순하였다. 그러나 최근 다품종 주문형 제품비중 확대로, 발생되는 문제점들이 Field Application 과 tight 한 연관성을 지니고 있어, 문제의 발생 경로, 원인 파악과 해결 대책 수립에 상당한 초기대응 시간을 필요하며, 관련 부서와의 실시간 협업 및 Cross-Checking을 통하지 않고서는 문제에 대한 최적 Solution 을 결정하기 힘든 현실이 되었다. 이러한 기술 이슈 해결 과정에 기 발생했던 유사 이슈 처리 과정 및 결과 자료가 문제 해결에 크게 기여할 수 있으나, 종래의 지식관리 시스템 체계로는 이러한 실무 형 지식을 획득하기 어려운 부분이 한계점으로 지적되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점 개선이 가능한 실무형 지식 관리 (AKM: Actual Knowledge Management) 기반의 기술적 이슈 추적 관리 시스템(TITS: Technical Issue Tracking System) 구축 사례를 제시하고자 한다. TITS 는 1) 기술 이슈의 발의 및 전파 기능과 2) 이슈 해결을 위한 Action Item 부여 및 의견 교환 기능 3) 해결된 이슈의 처리 결과 등록 기능 4) 유사 이슈 사례 검색 기능 등의 크게 4 개 모듈오 구성 되어있다. 이 시스템을 통해 반도체 엔지니어들은 기술적 이슈의 발생 시점부터, 원안분석, 대책 협의 ; Action Item 수립 등 문제 해결 과정과 결과 등록 시점까지 Real time Tracking이 가능해 졌으며, 본 시스템을 통해 처리된 모든 기술적 이슈 정보는 Issue Case Database 에 분류 저장되어, 향후 유사 이슈 발생 시, 이를 활용함으로써, 빠른 초기 대응 및 문제 해결에 직접적인 도움을 받을 수 있게 되었다.

  • Recently, it has been a worldwide issue to develop offshore wind farm based on the past technical experiences of onshore wind turbine installation. In Korea, the government has the wind-energy to be a new-sustainable field of development to bring green-growth in near future and put political and fiscal efforts to support the academic and industrial technical development. Especially, there are much advancement for the fields of turbine, blade, bearing, grid connection, ETC. Correspondingly, technical needs do exist for the offshore foundation installation techniques in geotechnical point of view. Within few years, 2~5MW offshore wind turbines will be constructed at about 30m water depth and it is known that monopiles of D=4~6m are suitable types of foundation. In order to construct offshore wind-turbine foundation, technical developments for drilling machine, design manual, monitoring&maintenance technique are required. This paper presents technical issues with related to offshore wind farm and large diameter monopile in the point of renewable energy development.

  • Education and training of technical staff for the new generation technological equipment has a vital importance for developing countries in order to maintain sustainable development and keep up with new generation technologies. Mechatronics the synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic and software engineering from an engineering perspective to serve the purposes of controlling advanced hybrid systems is a product of new generation technology which can be given as a sample to this phenomenon. Recent marine engines are combination of heavy industry with high technology. Nowadays, ships are built in full automation and equipped with computer controlled mechatronics systems. However, finding qualified officer and engineers who can operate, maintain, control and repair when it is required such full automatic systems with knowledge of a new generation system became a serious issue. Due to importance of this fact STCW Manila amendment has new training and certification requirements for electro-technical officers. In this paper, Mechatronics applications on ship are introduced, importance of it highlighted and a new syllabus is proposed for the training of marine engineers to be nurtured with mechatronics knowledge as it is required.

Brittle Crack Arrestability of Thick Steel Plates for Shipbuilding (선급용 고강도 극후물재의 취성파괴 정지 성능에 관한 연구)

  • In recent time there is vigorous requirement for the use of thick steel plate in various industrial fields including shipbuilding industry. Especially, with the continual increases in marine transportation volumes on a global scale, the steel of container ships has become thicker and thicker with the increased size of ships. In addition, the brittle crack arrestability of heavy thick plates was big issue, in recently. In this study, crack arrest test were conducted in order to investigate the crack arrestability of thick plates for shipbuilding steels, where test plate thicknesses were 50mm and 80mm. This paper introduces the brittle crack arrestability of heavy thick plates with thickness effect for shipbuilding.

  • The development of structural solutions for high-speed or very high-speed tracks that minimize total life cycle costs of the system is a key issue to improve the operational profitability of new investments. In opposition to conventional ballasted tracks, slab track solutions can be a cost-effective solution, but only in the cases where the benefits due to the increase in track availability and the reduction of track maintenance offsets its much higher construction costs. In the cases where such investment is not feasible, it is worth to evaluate possible structural improvements to ballasted track that allow reducing its maintenance needs without increasing too much its construction costs. This paper evaluates the design requirements and the impact of improving conventional high-speed ballasted tracks by using a bituminous subballast layer. It is divided into two main parts: first the design requirements of the structural solutions with bituminous subballast and its possible benefits on high-speed track deterioration, and secondly the evaluation of the economic impact, in terms of construction costs, of using this structural solution material in future Spanish high-speed lines.
