Taxonomic Studies on Cercospora and Allied Genera in Korea (XI) (한국산 Cercospora 및 관련 속의 분류학적 연구(XI))

  • This paper is the eleventh contribution towards taxonomic studies on Cercospora and allied genera, and contains ten species of Korean cercosporoid fungi; viz., Cercospora castaneae, C. dispori, C. ilicisopacae, C. malvarum, Phaeoramularia valerianicola, Pseudocercospora clematidis, P. cotoneasteris, P. handelii, P. lespedezicola, and Ramularia chaerophylli. Morphological characteristics of taxonomic value are described and illustrated for these species to contribute towards a mycological monograph of Korean cercosporoid fungi.

  • This paper is the twelfth contribution towards taxonomic studies on Cercospora and allied genera, and contains ten species of Korean cercosporoid fungi; viz., Cercospora brunkii, C. deutziae, C. granuliformis, C. hostae, Mycovellosiella nattrassii, Pseudocercospora chrysanthemicola, P. geicola, P. mississippiensis, P. viburnicylindrici, and Ramularia moehringiae. Morphological characteristics of taxonomic value are described and illustrated for these species to contribute towards a mycological monograph of Korean cercosporoid fungi.

  • To acquire an industrially useful biocatalyst for the enzymatic synthesis and production of various D-amino acid aminotransferase (D-AAT) activity. The enzyme activity was found from 110 strains of isolated thermophiles revealing its wide occurrence in thermophiles. Enzyme activity and thermal stability of the D-AAT producers were compared. Finally we have selected four thermophiles as producers of potent biocatalysts for the D-amino acid production; two thermophiles, Bacillus sp. Lk-1 and LK-2, having higher specific activity and two thermophiles, B. stearothermophilus KL-01 and Bacillus sp. KLS-01, having higher thermal stability than the D-AAT producers. Taxonomic and physiological characteristics of the four isolated thermophiles were described herein.

  • Strain 88-GT-161 producing new phthalic acid derivative and basic macrolide antibiotics was identified as being S. melanosporofuciens based on numerical taxonomic data. However, 4 unit characters among 139 units were clearly different from the common properties of 6 strains belonging to cluster No. 32 represented by the name of S. violaceoniger or S. violaceusniger, leading us to designate as a variety of S. melunosporofaciens. This paper describes the taxonomic characteristics of the strain. Isolation and chemical structures, including biological activities of the active compounds produced by this strain will be presented elsewhere.

  • To use the precise scientific name of the genus Gymnogobius from Korea, a taxonomic review of the genus Gymnogobius was made based on specimens collected in streams and estuaries of Korea from 1982 to 2007. The genus Gymnogobius in Korea includes 7 species: Gymnogobius breunigii (Steindachner), G. heptacanthus (Hilgendorf), G. macrognathos (Bleeker), G. mororanus (Jordan and Snyder), G. opperiens Stevenson, G. petschiliensis (Rendahl), G. urotaenia (Higendorf). A key to species of the genus Gymnogobius from Korea is provided, with description of their morphological characteristics and their distribution.

Phylogenetic Relationship of Ganoderma Species with the Polyporaceae Based on RFLP Analysis of the Nuclear ITS Region

  • Restriction-polymorphic patterns of nuclear-ITS were examined for the genetic relationships among 12 bisidiomycetous mushrooms to Aphyllophorales and Agaricales. The taxonomic affinity of Ganoderma species with the family Polyporaceae also was examined. With 13 restriction endonucleases, 159 restriction characters were generated form the 12 species examined. UPGMA and neighbor-joining analyses separated the 12 species into two genetically distinct groups that correspond to orders (Agaricales and Aphyllophorales) where each species is included. This result indicates that there is clear genetic demarcation between Agaricales and Aphyllophorales. Dendrograms constructed by several data analyses showed that even though Ganoderma species are somewhat in intermediate taxonomic position between the Polyporaceae and families of the Agaricales, they are genetically more related to the Polyporaceae. These results are consistent with morphological characters observed in those mushrooms. However, it is premature to conclude taxonomic status Ganoderma species in the present study employing small sample size.

Notes on the Lichen Genus Hypotrachyna (Parmeliaceae) from South Korea

  • Hypotrachyna (Vainio) Hale is a somewhat rare lichen genus found on the Korean Peninsula. Since it was first recorded more than two decades ago, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study of the genus has been conducted. Thus, the present study was conducted to carry out a detailed taxonomic and revisionary study of Hypotrachyna in South Korea. This study was based on specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI). Detailed taxonomic studies and a literature review confirmed the presence of seven species of Hypotrachyna from South Korea, including one new record, Hypotrachyna nodakensis (Asahina) Hale. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical and chemical characters together with a key to all known Hypotrachyna species are presented.
