A Study on the Management and Use of Plant Resources in Baekdudaegan Arboretum - Focused on Aboretum Core area, Munsu and Okseok Mountain - (국립백두대간수목원의 식물자원 및 관리·활용방안 - 수목원 중점조성지역, 문수산, 옥석산을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was carried out to survey the vascular plants of Baekdudaegan Arboretum area. The results are as follows. The numbers of flora in this study area were summarized as 655 taxa including 95 families, 332 genera, 567 species, 5 subspecies, 72 varieties and 11 formas. The rare plants were 17 taxa including Parasenecio firmus, Rhododendron micranthum, Iris odaesanensis, Lysimachia coreana and so forth. The Korean endemic plants were 16 taxa including Weigela subsessilis, Heloniopsis koreana, Salix koriyanagi, Vicia chosenensis and so forth. Plants Adaptable to Climate Change were Northern plants 18 species, Southern plants 2 species, endemic plants 10 species. The naturalized plants were 44 taxa and ratios of naturalized index and urbanization index were estimated Core area 10.2% and 4.9%, Mt. Munsu 4.9% and 2.3% and Mt. Okseok 5.5% and 2.6%. The floristic regional indicator plants found in this area were 3taxa(2.5%) of grade V, 12taxa(11.0%) of grade IV, 22taxa(20.2%) of grade III, 35taxa(32.1%) of grade II. In life forms, hemicryptophytes were The most dominant. Next was a Therophytes. In addition, 492 taxa were categorized by usage into 8 groups, as follows: Edible 239taxa(36.5%), Fiber 10taxa(1.5%), Industrial 1taxon(0.2%), Miscellaneous 183taxa(27.9%), Ornamental 65taxa(9.9%), Pasturing 259taxa(39.5%), Siscellaneousg 14taxa(2.1%) and Timer 21taxa(3.2%).

The Flora of Mt. Biseul in Daegu (대구광역시 비슬산 일대의 식물상)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Mt. Biseul. The vascular plants collected 10 times(from May 2006 to October 2007) were identified as 468 taxa in total, including 89 families, 302 genera, 397 species, 1 subspecies, 59 varieties and 11 forms. Korean endemic plants of this area were identified as 17 taxa including Thalictrum uchiyamai, Coreanomecon hylomeconoides, Lonicera subsessilis, etc.; the Ministry of Environment-designated plants, which should be protected by the wildlife protection law, were identified as one taxon including Aconitum austrokoreense; the Office of Forestry-designated rare & endangered plants were identified as 6 taxa including Viola albida, Lloydia triflora, Streptopus ovalis, etc.; the naturalized plants were identified as 34 taxa, and their naturalization ratio and urban index were found to be 7.3%, and 12.2% respectively. This study newly identified about 160 taxa of the plants, among which 17 taxa were newly added to the list of naturalized plants, such as Phytolacca americana, Dicentra spectabilis, Lepidium apetalum, Medicago lupulina, Euphorbia supina, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Cosmos bipinnatus, Crassocephalum crepidioides, Galinsoga ciliata, Rudbeckia bicolor, Sonchus oleraceus, Tagetes minuta, Taraxacum officinale, Chloris virgata, Festuca arundinacea, Lolium perenne, Tradescantia reflexa, etc. There existed many kinds of plants resources having conservational value like Aconitum austrokoreense etc. in this area, but there remains a fear of nature destruction's acceleration due to indiscriminate human development and access of a lot of visitors, so it is judged that there should be a management plan, such as a limit on the number of visitors or rest-year-system for restoration of nature.

Leaf Litter Breakdown of Quercus mongolica and Calpinus cordata In a Headwater Stream (소하천의 신갈나무와 까치박달 낙엽의 분쇄)

  • Leaf Litter processing rate of Quercus mongolica was compared with that of Carpinus cordata in a first-order stream draining Mt. Jumbong in Inje-Gun, Kangwon Province. Daily processing rate (-k . day$^{-1}$ ) of Q. mongolica leaf litter in mesh bags was 0.00503, about one-third of that of C. cordata leaf litter. Forty five macroinvertebrate taxa were collected from litter bags; 39 taxi from C. cordate and 38 taxa from Q. mongolica litter bags. Nemoura tau, a precopteran shredder, was the most abundant taxon in both leaf species, and the second was the non-predatory chironomids. In terms of biomass, Gammarus, an amphipodan shredder, was the largest. and followed by Cincticostella castanea, an ephemeropteran gatherers. The biomass of most insect taxa decreased during April to June, while that of non-insect taxa greatly increased during the same time period. Gammarus was the most important shredder talon to the leaf litter breakdown in the experimental stream and appeared to prefer C. cordata to Q. nongolica leaf litter. N. tau, in spite of its abundance, seemed to have a limited effect on the leaf litter processing . Since other shredders were minor compared with these two taxa, leaf litter processing in this stream appeared to largely depend on the feeding ecology of Gammarus.

Microcrustacean Community Dynamics in Upo Wetlands: Impact of Rainfall and Physiochemical Factor on Microcrustacean Community (우포늪의 미소갑각류 군집 동태: 강우량 및 이화학적 요인이 미소갑각류 군집 분포에 미치는 영향)

  • The relationships between environmental factors and the dynamics of the microcrustacean community, including planktonic or epiphytic cladocerans and copepods, were studied at Upo Wetlands from 2001 to 2010. Among 10 identified cladoceran taxon, epiphytic cladocerans (Alona, Camptocercus, Simocephalus, Diaphanosoma, Sida) and planktonic cladocerans (Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia, Moina, Scapholeberis) showed distinctive patterns in appearance throughout the year. Overall, epiphytic cladocerans were more abundant during the aquatic plant development season (May to Nov.), planktonic cladocerans were similarly distributed throughout the seasons, but showed a lower density than epiphytic cladocerans. The seasonal changes in copepods abundance showed a similar seasonal pattern when compared to epiphytic cladocerans. Planktonic cladocerans showed no significant relationship to rainfall and physico-chemical factors, while epiphytic cladocerans exhibited a distinct relationship with rainfall and water temperature (n=120, p<0.01), and a negative relationship with pH and conductivity (n=120, p<0.05). Among the epiphytic cladocerans, the Alona and Diaphanosoma showed a distinctive correlation with environmental factors, and their density was affected by rainfall and water temperature (n=120, p<0.01). Copepods had a positive relationship with rainfall (n=120, p<0.01) and water temperature (n=120, p<0.05). In conclusion, changes in rainfall and water temperature can affect the seasonal changes of microcrustacean community and abundance in Upo Wetlands.

Spatial and Temporal Variability of Phytoplankton at Hwadang-ri, Goseng-gun (고성군 화당리 연안에서 식물플랑크톤의 계절 및 지점별 조성 변화)

  • This study describe seasonal patterns in the variation of phytoplankton frequency in the water surface and basal layers and their spatial distributions at seven stations in Hwadang-ri, Goseng-gun in 2013. The phytoplankton community at Hwadang-ri was very diverse, with 60 taxa identified, representing three classes. Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) exhibited the greatest diversity, with 41 taxa identified. These were followed by the dinoflagellates Dinophyceae, Cryptophyceae, and Eugenophyceae, with 16 taxa, two taxa, and one taxon, respectively. Water surfaces were shown with the relative individual density or abundance across areas. Except in January, Shannon-Weaver indices of diversity of the water surface layer were lower than those of the basal layer. In addition, evenness indices of the basal layer were higher than those of the water surface layer, except in January. For the community as a whole, the values of ${\beta}$-diversity were low for the seven stations: 1.125 for the water surface layer and 1.481 for the basal layer. Seasonal values for ${\beta}$-diversity were similar at the seven stations: 1.725 for the water surface layer and 1.347 for the basal layer. The phytoplankton community showed high taxonomic homogeneity in all four seasons, in addition to similar trends in seasonal development at depths in the same stations. However, the size distribution of the abundance and biomass showed a statistically significant west-east difference.

Analysis of Archaeal Communities in Full-Scale Anaerobic Digesters Using 454 Pyrosequencing (454 Pyrosequencing을 이용한 실규모 혐기성 소화조의 아케아 군집구조 분석)

  • Archaeal communities were investigated using 454 pyrosequencing technology based on 16S rRNA gene in 11 samples collected from six different full-scale anaerobic digesters. Observed operational taxonomic units (OTUs) estimated from the archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences were 13-55 OTUs (3% cutoff) which was corresponded to 29-89% of Chao1 richness estimates. In the anaerobic digesters there were archaeal sequences within the orders Thermoproteales, Thermoplasmatales, Desulfurococcales as well as within the orders Methanomicrobiales, Methanobacteriales, Methanococcales, Methanosarcinales, and Methanocellales, which are known to produce methane. Among these orders, Methanococcales known to produce methane using hydrogen was the predominant taxon and constituted 51.8-99.7% of total sequences. All samples showed a very similar community structure (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.99) except for one sample based on a heat map analysis. In addition, canonical correspondence analysis correlating archaeal communities to the environmental variables demonstrated that digester temperature and total solids removal rate were the two important explanatory variables. Overall results suggested that environmental and operational variables of anaerobic digester are important factors determining archaeal diversity and community structure.

Environmental Factors and Variation Characteristics of Zooplankton Communities in Gamak Bay (가막만 동물플랑크톤 군집의 변동특성과 환경요인)

  • Spatio-temporal patterns in the zooplankton communities, physicochemical environmental factors, and dominant species were examined in Camak Bay from April, July, September, and November, 2003. A total of 40 taxa were sampled with a mean abundance of total zooplankton ranging from $270{\sim}1,803inds/m^3$. The most abundant species was Acartia erythraea, followed by Eurytemora pacifica, Podon polyphemoides, A. omorii, and Paracalanus parvus s. 1 during the study period. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences in community structure among three regions: the middle part of the sampling area (B), sites 1, 2 (A) and other sites (C). The number of species and diversity (H') varied significantly among the three regions (p<0.05), but no differences in the mean abundances were observed (p>0.05). In order to investigate factors affecting the correlations between the abundance of dominant species, all zooplankton and environmental factors ware calculated using a correlation analysis. Of these, the abundance of dominant taxon showed positive correlation with seawater temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen (p<0.05). In statistical analysis showed that the environmental factors influencing the variation of the communities ere predominantly temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.

Analysis on the Correlation Between Vegetation Structure and Environment Factors of the Geumosanseong-inside in Geumosan Provincial Park, in Korea (금오산도립공원의 금오산성 식생구조와 환경요인의 상관관계 분석)

  • This study was conducted to compare and analyze forest vegetation distributed in Geumosanseong-inside in Geumosan Provincial Park from 2017.10 to 2019.6. The vegetation structure was classified by the phytosociological method and TWINSPAN and the correlation between the community structure and the environmental factors was analyzed using DCCA ordination analydsis. The vegetation structures are Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus mandshurica, Q. acutissima, Larix leptolepis, Prunus padus and Morus alba community by the phytosociological method and 16 communities under TWINSPAN. The importance value of Q. mongolica(64.5) was the highest, and followed by F. mandshurica, L. leptolepis, Acer pseudosieboldianum, M. alba, P. padus, Q. acutissima, Sorbus alnifolia, P. serrulata var. pubescens, F. sieboldiana, Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Castanea crenata which is consistent with species having the dominance status by analysis of the vegetation structure. As the results of DBH analysis for taxon with high importance values, Q. mongolica and M. alba represented normal distribution, and thus, the dominance status of these species is likely to continue. L. leptolepis will maintain the dominance status due to high density of large individuals as compared with species above medium size. However, it will decrease because of high mortality after increase in age class. F. mandshurica and P. padus continue to show dominance status due to high density of young individuals as compared with species above medium size. Q. acutissima have high density of individuals above intermediate size and low density of young individuals, and thus, will maintain the dominance status. A. pseudosieboldianum, F. sieboldiana and R.schlippenbachii which are arborescent will present continuously high dominance status because of high density of young individuals. Soil analysis shows that whereas pH, Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the research area were lower than the average values of overall forest soil and O.M, T-N, C.E.C and P2O5 were higher. We expected that these results were due to agricultures until 50 years ago in Geumosanseong-inside. As a result of DCCA ordination analysis using eleven environmental factors and communities classified by the phytosociological method analysis showed that Q. mongolica was distributed in the environment with higher elevation and O.M and steep slope, and lower P2O5, Mg2+ and Ca2+. In contrast to F. mandshurica, Q. acutissima was distributed in higher K+ and lower pH. L. leptolepsis was distributed in various environment.

A taxonomical review of Solidago japonica and its relatives (Asteraceae) (미역취 및 근연분류군(국화과)의 분류학적 재검토)

  • The NE Asiatic Solidago virgaurea complex in Korea has been reported on 5 taxa (S. virgaurea subsp. asiatica, S. virgaurea var. taquetii, S. virgaurea var. coreana, S. virgaurea subsp. leiocarpa, and S. virgaurea subsp. gigantea). However, the broad morphological variations and a lack of diagnostic characteristics have made it difficult to distinguish these taxa and have thus resulted in a complicated taxonomy in the complex. Therefore, to clarify the classification and delimitation of each taxon, the morphological characteristics of the S. virgaurea complex were investigated by examining the original descriptions and type specimens. Field work was also conducted to investigate the morphological and geographic features. In conclusion, S. japonica Kitam., as a legitimate name, was distributed all over the country except for the Is. Ulleung-do in Korea, as distinguished from S. virgaurea L. Both S. virgaurea var. taquetii and S. virgaurea var. coreana were considered as synonyms of S. japonica, as their morphological characteristics were within the variation range of those of S. japonica. Furthermore, S. virgaurea subsp. leiocarpa does not occur in Korea. Additional investigations are required to clarify the classification of S. virgaurea subsp. gigantea, whose populations were not found during the investigation in this study. S. dahurica, meanwhile, was distributed in the northern part of North Korea.

Two newly naturalized plants in Korea: Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton and Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. (한국 미기록 귀화식물: 솔잎해란초와 유럽광대나물)

  • Two naturalized plants belonging to Plantaginaceae and Labiatae are newly recorded for Korean flora. Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton, a taxon of the unrecorded genus Nuttallanthus (Plantaginaceae), was founded in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. This species can be distinguished from the Linaria species by its corolla with a pale blue to a pale purple color, a lower lip longer than the upper lip and seed with 4-7 angles when cross-sectioned. Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. was found in Gwangju Metropolitan city, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do and Gochang-gun, Jeollanam-do. It can be distinguished from L. purpureum L. by its irregularly dentate bracts and upper lips 3-4 mm in length. New Korean names were given, as Sol-lip-hae-rancho to Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton and Eu-reop-gwang-dae-na-mul to Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. In addition, their descriptions, photos, illustrations and keys to related genera and species are provided here.
