  • This study analyzed the annual difference of firm's book income, taxable income and BTD that before and after the 2009 corporate tax rate cut and 2018 corporate tax rate increase. ANOVA analysis was performed for each item by year, and post hoc was performed after homogeneity test of variance. The research results are as follows. First, the book income at corporate tax rate cut was higher than taxable income, and BTD in 2008 was significantly different from other years. Second, the book income at corporate tax rate increase was less than taxable income, and BTD in 2017 was also significantly different from other years. In other words, the firm is performing appropriate profit adjustments to reduce of tax burden when the corporate tax rate changes. Because of this, the BTD in the year immediately before the corporate tax rate change is different from other years.

  • This study aims to investigate whether and why the disclosure of full financial information to estimate taxable income (TI) is incrementally useful for investors' decision making at earnings announcements. This paper shows analytically that the information content of TI beyond book income is determined by the relative informativeness of TI exceeding that of book-tax differences (BTDs), and therefore should be affected by the earnings quality of TI relative to BTDs. This study collects data on earnings announcements from Korean listed firms and employs multiple regression tests for earnings persistence, a major indicator of earnings quality, of TI and BTDs and their information content. The empirical test results show that TI is more persistent than BTDs for the entire sample in this study. Further, the investors' reaction to TI is greater than that to BTDs, and the market response to TI controlling for BI is positive. However, the market test results are significantly observed only in the subsample group with full disclosure of financial statements, not in the samples with disclosure of aggregated earnings only. In sum, this study provides new evidence that the TI information obtained from a detailed earnings announcement is useful for investors in addition to book income.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the geographic distribution of diabetes mortality in Japan and identify socioeconomic factors affecting differences in municipality-specific diabetes mortality. Methods: Diabetes mortality data by year and municipality from 2013 to 2017 were extracted from Japanese Vital Statistics, and the socioeconomic characteristics of municipalities were obtained from government statistics. We calculated the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of diabetes for each municipality using the empirical Bayes method and represented geographic differences in SMRs in a map of Japan. Multiple linear regression was conducted to identify the socioeconomic factors affecting differences in SMR. Statistically significant socioeconomic factors were further assessed by calculating the relative risk of mortality of quintiles of municipalities classified according to the degree of each socioeconomic factor using Poisson regression analysis. Results: The geographic distribution of diabetes mortality differed by gender. Of the municipality-specific socioeconomic factors, high rates of single-person households and unemployment and a high number of hospital beds were associated with a high SMR for men. High rates of fatherless households and blue-collar workers were associated with a high SMR for women, while high taxable income per-capita income and total population were associated with low SMR for women. Quintile analysis revealed a complex relationship between taxable income and mortality for women. The mortality risk of quintiles with the highest and lowest taxable per-capita income was significantly lower than that of the middle-income quintile. Conclusions: Socioeconomic factors of municipalities in Japan were found to affect geographic differences in diabetes mortality.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out ways to enhance corporate value by using more efficient use of non-reflux Income which is commonly considered in existing corporate income tax refund and newly introduced investment and mutual aid promotion tax. Specifically, we analyzed the effect of income tax return income and income tax return on wages and fixed - asset investments, which are commonly considered in the two tax systems, on firm value. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that short-term internal reserves and income reflux activities had a negative impact on firm value, and long-term internal reserves and income reflux return had positive effects on firm value. It is recommended not to formulate uniform criteria such as the ratio of income refund activity to the contents of tax, but to apply the tax refund to the internal taxation system and the taxable income source.

The results of this study will provide an important basic data required for rational management of tax clients. A total of 20 sub-hypotheses were used, which can essentially be summarized into the following three major statements. The hypotheses investigation results can be summarized as below. First, as for the characteristic factors of the preparer, the taxation knowledge factor and the client satisfaction factor were found to be in a significant median positive relationship, and the experience factor and the client satisfaction factor were found to be in a relatively less significant relationship. Second, the factor on the relationship with the preparer and the client satisfaction factor were all found to be in a highly significant positive relationship. Third, in order to measure the characteristics of the taxation objects, relationships between potential tax reductions factor, probability of taxable income adjustments factor, and the client satisfaction factor were analyzed, and they were found to have positive relationships of relatively high significance. Fourth, the average for the client satisfaction factor by industry was found to be the highest for the manufacturing industry, followed by wholesalers and retailers. Other sectors showed little deviation from the average of 4.9, but this factor was not statistically significant. Fifth, the average difference examination of the satisfaction levels for the clients with or without experience of taxable income adjustments showed that those without experience of taxable income adjustments had higher satisfaction levels. Sixth, 12 study hypotheses had been proposed in order to investigate the relationship between the client satisfaction factors and the client satisfaction levels according to the characteristics of clients. Among the 12 sub-hypotheses, except for the study hypothesis of investigating the relationship between the tax preparer's taxation knowledge and the client's satisfaction levels according to the experience of taxable income adjustments, 11 study hypotheses were all not adopted.

  • Investing in the tax-benefit funds is the best way for the inexperienced investors who do not have knowledge, expertise, and the time to research the information by themselves. This study describes the benefits of tax-benefit funds in Thailand. The tax-benefit funds consist of retirement mutual funds (RMFs) and super saving funds (SSFs). There are many kinds of funds investment policies on offer. The tax-benefit funds provide the opportunity to investors, which they are able to invest a small amount and draw more benefits. They hire fund managers to manage their money. These funds are able to help investors to meet their goals. The RMFs are suitable for investors who want to have money for retirement, investing every year, and getting tax exemption. The investors who invest in RMFs are able to deduct the tax income by including other retirement funds not exceeding THB500,000.00 per year. The SSFs match for the investors who need to obtain the tax exemption and long-term investment for at least ten years. The SSFs provide the benefit to investors that they are able to deduct taxable income not more than THB200,000.00 per year. Finally, these funds are tax-except and promoted for retirement savings.

  • This article critically reviews the arguments that deny the financial feasbility and effectiveness of universal basic income as an alternative to existing social security systems and makes some suggestions to design effective and efficient basic income schemes. Regarding the financial feasibility of universal basic income, I argue that replacement of the existing regressive tax expenditures with universal basic income without raising tax rates can effectively reduce tax burden or provide income support to a majority of people except the rich. Addition of basic income to the tax base and reduction of the number of beneficiaries of public assistance and the amount of cash payment for them can further help save money. Regarding the redistributive effect, I note that the targeting ability of the existing social security systems is not good and that "the paradox of redistribution" that universal-type programs tend to be more redistributive than selective programs applies to universal basic income as well. I demonstrate significant redistributive effect of a hypothetical revenue-neutral basic income scheme and reviews several empirical studies done in Korea and abroad to show that basic income can be more effective in redistribution than social insurances or public assistance programs. Lastly, I emphasize the need to construct a reliable tax-benefit microsimulation model to help researchers to study redistributive effects of basic income schemes and other taxes and social policies.
