In recent years, interest in drones has grown, and many countries are developing them into a strategic industry of the future. Drones are not only used in industries such as logistics and agriculture but also in various public sectors such as life rescue, disaster investigation, traffic control, and firefighting. One of the most important tasks of a drone is to accurately identify targets in these applications. Target recognition may vary depending on the search environment of the drone. Therefore, this study tests and analyzes the drone's target recognition performance according to changes in the search environment such as the search altitude and the search angle. In addition, we propose a new algorithm that improves upon the disadvantages of the Haar cascade method, which is the existing algorithm that recognizes the target by analyzing a captured image.
As Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image can be acquired regardless of the weather and day or night, it is highly recommended to be used for Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) in the fields of surveillance, reconnaissance, and national security. However, there are some limitations in terms of cost and operation to build various and vast amounts of target images for the SAR-ATR system. Recently, interest in the development of an ATR system based on simulated SAR images using a target model is increasing. Attributed Scattering Center (ASC) matching and template matching mainly used in SAR-ATR are applied to target classification. The method based on ASC matching was developed by World View Vector (WVV) feature reconstruction and Weighted Bipartite Graph Matching (WBGM). The template matching was carried out by calculating the correlation coefficient between two simulated images reconstructed with adjacent points to each other. For the performance analysis of the two proposed methods, the Synthetic and Measured Paired Labeled Experiment (SAMPLE) dataset was used, which has been recently published by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). We conducted experiments under standard operating conditions, partial target occlusion, and random occlusion. The performance of the ASC matching is generally superior to that of the template matching. Under the standard operating condition, the average recognition rate of the ASC matching is 85.1%, and the rate of the template matching is 74.4%. Also, the ASC matching has less performance variation across 10 targets. The ASC matching performed about 10% higher than the template matching according to the amount of target partial occlusion, and even with 60% random occlusion, the recognition rate was 73.4%.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to enhance the recognition performance of a far and partially occluded three-dimensional (3-D) target in computational curving-effective integral imaging (CEII) by using the direct pixel-mapping (DPM) method. With this scheme, the elemental image array (EIA) originally picked up from a far and partially occluded 3-D target can be converted into a new EIA just like the one virtually picked up from a target located close to the lenslet array. Due to this characteristic of DPM, resolution and quality of the reconstructed target image can be highly enhanced, which results in a significant improvement of recognition performance of a far 3-D object. Experimental results reveal that image quality of the reconstructed target image and object recognition performance of the proposed system have been improved by 1.75 dB and 4.56% on the average in PSNR (peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio) and NCC (normalized correlation coefficient), respectively, compared to the conventional system.

Due to the angle of view, illumination and scene diversity, real-time dynamic face detection and recognition is no small difficulty in those unrestricted environments. In this study, we used the intrinsic correlation between detection and calibration, using a multi-task cascaded convolutional neural network(MTCNN) to improve the efficiency of face recognition, and the output of each core network is mapped in parallel to a compact Euclidean space, where distance represents the similarity of facial features, so that the target face can be identified as quickly as possible, without waiting for all network iteration calculations to complete the recognition results. And after the angle of the target face and the illumination change, the correlation between the recognition results can be well obtained. In the actual application scenario, we use a multi-camera real-time monitoring system to perform face matching and recognition using successive frames acquired from different angles. The effectiveness of the method was verified by several real-time monitoring experiments, and good results were obtained.
Automatic emotion recognition based on facial cues, such as facial action units (AUs), has received huge attention in the last decade due to its wide variety of applications. Current computer-based automated two-phase facial emotion recognition procedures first detect AUs from input images and then infer target emotions from the detected AUs. However, more robust AU detection and AU-to-emotion mapping methods are required to deal with the error accumulation problem inherent in the multiphase scheme. Motivated by our key observation that a single AU detector does not perform equally well for all AUs, we propose a novel two-phase facial emotion recognition framework, where the presence of AUs is detected by group decisions of multiple AU detectors and a target emotion is inferred from the combined AU detection decisions. Our emotion recognition framework consists of three major components - multiple AU detection, AU detection fusion, and AU-to-emotion mapping. The experimental results on two real-world face databases demonstrate an improved performance over the previous two-phase method using a single AU detector in terms of both AU detection accuracy and correct emotion recognition rate.
The detection of ship wakes image can demonstrate substantial information regarding on a ship, such as its tonnage, type, direction, and speed of movement. Consequently, the wake target recognition is a favorable way for ship identification. This paper proposes a Local Binary Pattern (LBP) approach to extract image features (wakes) for training an Improved Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (IBPANN) to identify ship speed. This method is applied to sort and recognize the ship wakes of five different speeds images, the result shows that the detection accuracy is satisfied as expected, the average correctness rates of wakes target recognition at the five speeds may be achieved over 80%. Specifically, the lower ship's speed, the better accurate rate, sometimes it's accuracy could be close to 100%. In addition, one significant feature of this method is that it can receive a higher recognition rate than the nearest neighbor classification method.

Recently, autonomous robots which can achieve the complex tasks have been required with the advance of robotics. Advanced robot vision for recognition is necessary for the realization of such robots. In this paper, we propose a method to recognize an object in the actual environment. We assume that a 3D-object model used in our proposal method is the voxel data. Its inside is full up and its surface has color information. We also define the word "recognition" as the estimation of a target object's condition. This condition means the posture and the position of a target object in the actual environment. The proposal method consists of three steps. In Step 1, we extract features from the 3D-object model. In Step 2, we estimate the position of the target object. At last, we estimate the posture of the target object in Step 3. And we experiment in the actual environment. We also confirm the performance of our proposal method from results.
Active sonar transmits sound waves to detect covertly maneuvering underwater objects and detects the signals reflected back from the target. However, in addition to the target's echo, the active sonar's received signal is mixed with seafloor, sea surface reverberation, biological noise, and other noise, making target recognition difficult. Conventional techniques for detecting signals above a threshold not only cause false detections or miss targets depending on the set threshold, but also have the problem of having to set an appropriate threshold for various underwater environments. To overcome this, research has been conducted on automatic calculation of threshold values through techniques such as Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) and application of advanced tracking filters and association techniques, but there are limitations in environments where a significant number of detections occur. As deep learning technology has recently developed, efforts have been made to apply it in the field of underwater target detection, but it is very difficult to acquire active sonar data for discriminator learning, so not only is the data rare, but there are only a very small number of targets and a relatively large number of non-targets. There are difficulties due to the imbalance of data. In this paper, the image of the energy distribution of the detection signal is used, and a classifier is learned in a way that takes into account the imbalance of the data to distinguish between targets and non-targets and added to the existing technique. Through the proposed technique, target misclassification was minimized and non-targets were eliminated, making target recognition easier for active sonar operators. And the effectiveness of the proposed technique was verified through sea experiment data obtained in the East Sea.

To improve the accuracy rate of guided weapons, many studies have been conducted on the accurate detection and identification of targets from sea clutter. Because of the variety and complicated characteristics of both sea-clutter and target signals, an active target recognition technique is required. In this study, we propose an algorithm to distinguish clutter and recognize targets by applying a fractal signature(FS) classifier, which is a fractal dimension, and a high-resolution target image(HRTI) classifier, which applies scene matching to an image formed from a scanned image. Simulation results using the algorithm revealed that the HRTI classifier recognized targets 1 and 2 at a 100 % rate, whereas the FS classifier recognized targets 1 and 2 at rates of 90 % and 93 %, respectively.
A real-time joint transform correlator by using JPEG-compressed reference images is proposed as practical solution to storage problem and improvement of processing time of automatic target recognition system [1]. Effects of compression on recognition performance of join transform correlator are quantitatively investigated under situations where the target is suffered from noise and has contrast difference with respect to the reference. Two images with different spatial-frequency contents and contrast were used as the test scenes. The simulation results show that, the recognition performance of joint transform correlator by using the compressed reference images with high spatial-frequency components is more sensitive to noise and contrast difference than the low spatial-frequency image.
